In 1878-80, British-Indian forces fought a war to ensure that Afghanistan remained free from Russian interference. Although the campaign was eventually brought to a successful conclusion, the British suffered several setbacks in their struggle to control the volatile country.Throughout the 19th century, the British Government was convinced that the extension of Russian influence over Central Asia constituted a real threat to its Indian domains. This had led Britain to first invade Afghanistan in 1839, with disastrous consequences. In 1876, the spectre of Russian interference appeared once more when the Emir of Afghanistan, Sher Ali, was visited by a Russian diplomatic mission. When he then refused to accept a British envoy, the Viceroy of India, Lord Lytton, decided to act. The war was fought as part of Britain's 'Great Game' with Russia for influence in the traditionally turbulent wilds of Afghanistan. The British left Afghanistan in the hands of Abdur Rahman, who agreed to conduct his foreign policy through the Government of India. They also seized several Afghan districts in the Khyber and Kurram border areas. However, the provocative policy of maintaining a British resident in Kabul was quietly dropped. The last British and Indian soldiers left the country in April 1881.

Book Recollections of the Kabul Campaign

Download or read book Recollections of the Kabul Campaign written by Joshua Duke and published by . This book was released on 1883 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recollections of the Kabul Campaign, 1879 & 1880 is a firsthand account of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80). The author, Joshua Duke, was a British officer in the Bengal Medical Service, attached to "our native army in India." The war began in November 1878 when Great Britain, fearful of what it saw as growing Russian influence in Afghanistan, invaded the country from British India. The first phase of the conflict ended in May 1879 with the Treaty of Gandamak, which permitted the Afghans to maintain internal sovereignty but forced them to cede control over their foreign policy to the British. Fighting resumed in September 1879 after an anti-British uprising in Kabul that resulted in the death of Sir Louis Cavagnari, the British resident in Kabul and a negotiator of the Treaty of Gandamak, and of nearly all the British soldiers at the residency. The Kabul Field Force, commanded by General Sir Frederick Roberts and composed of British and Indian army regiments, was sent to Kabul to restore order and take revenge. Recollections of the Kabul Campaign offers a vivid eye-witness account of the main incidents of the war, including the bloody siege of the Sherpur Cantonment of December 1879, in which Afghan forces mounted a nearly successful attack on the Anglo-Indian forces, the relief march from Kabul to Kandahar in August 1880, and the climactic Battle of Kandahar in September 1880 that ended the war. In addition to his account of the military operations, Duke provides insights from his perspective as a medical officer, for example, on the treatment of wounds by traditional methods by the Afghan forces. The book is illustrated with a frontispiece photograph of Roberts and maps and drawings of important battles and fortresses. The appendix contains a summary explanation of the causes of both Anglo-Afghan wars, the full text of the Treaty of Gandamak, and copies of correspondence between Russian and Afghan authorities that were found by the British when they occupied Kabul.

Book What the Fusiliers Did

Download or read book What the Fusiliers Did written by H. Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare account of the Afghan campaigns in 1878-1880 written by a private soldier who served in the 1st Battalion of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers. Written and published while the author was still serving in the Indian Army in Lahore, the book opens with an extraordianry prelude written in doggeral verse: And now we had some supper, and a pint of beer as well/ Which we enjoyed right merrily, as many a man could tell./ And then we to our blankets went, and taking off our clothes/ Each man he then turned in and got a well-earned night s repose . Mercifully, the rest of Private Cooper s book is a concise prose account of the two abortive campaigns in Afghanistan in 1878-79 and 1879-80; part of the Great Game rivalry between Britain and Russia for influence in that wild and remote mountain region, which, then as now, defies all such attempts at external control. A plain and unvarnished worm s eye view of war and Victorian imperial soldiering.

Book excerpt: The Afghan Wars, written by Archibald Forbes in 1892, is a British account of two Anglo-Afghan wars, fought between British India and Afghanistan; the first war took place from 1839-1842, and and the second from 1878-1880. Though history dictates the conclusion of both British invasions (in which neither side really wins the wars and the Britons retreat twice, but still accomplish their objectives), Forbes' account is saturated with details of the occupations and soldiers' experiences, while still conveying the overall experience and outcome of each war. It also includes illustrations of important figures and war plans which complement Forbes' descriptions. This work is perfect for students of British and Middle Eastern military history. ARCHIBALD FORBES (1838-1900) was a British war correspondent born in Morayshire, Scotland. He attended the University of Aberdeen before entering the Royal Dragoons as a private. He was injured and released from his regiment; he was working as a journalist in London when the Franco-Prussian War began in 1870 and he was drafted to the front lines as a correspondent. He became a representative for the Daily News which publicized his work in intelligence transmission. After the war, he traveled to Spain, India, Serbia, Cyprus, and South Africa, working for the Daily News and reporting on various wars and campaigns. Forbes also authored several books, including an autobiography, about his experiences.
