Book excerpt: Within a landscape, such as the contemporary one, in which studies on the notion of the image proliferate through multiple disciplinary fields, the book Aesthetics of Values. Contemporary Perspectives proposes a path dedicated to the analysis of the status of the image, taking its relationship with the notion of value as a starting point. The project stems from the collaboration between the "Art, Critique and Aesthetic Experience" group of the Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) of the University of Lisbon and the European Aesthetic Seminar on "images, emotions, values" (http: // sites.unimi.it/eu_aesthetics/). In particular, the proposed chapters intend to develop the contributions made during the international seminar "Aesthetics of Values" held in Lisbon in February 2017, during which some of the most authoritative voices of Aesthetic studies on the subject intervened. The volume should also fill a gap in the field of studies on value aesthetics, at a time when, in spite of the proliferation of works dedicated to this topic in the analytical field, the need is felt, as recently underlined by an author of the calibre of Peter Lamarque, for research that returns to investigate the theme of aesthetic value starting from the analysis of experience.

Urban planning, everyday life, and innovation merged in a rapidly changing Lisbon. Leisure activities for the citizens of the First Republic began to include new forms of musical theater, including operetta and the revue theater. These theatrical forms became an important site for the display of modernity, and the representation of a new national identity. Author João Silva argues that the rise of these genres is inextricably bound to the complex process through which the idea of Portugal was presented, naturalized, and commodified as a modern nation-state. Entertaining Lisbon studies popular entertainment in Portugal and its connections with modern life and nation-building, showing that the promotion of the nation through entertainment permeated the market for cultural goods. Exploring the Portuguese entertainment market as a reflection of ongoing negotiations between local, national, and transnational influences on identity, Silva intertwines representations of gender, class, ethnicity, and technology with theatrical repertoires, street sounds, and domestic music making. Morais lucidly argues that art criticism, when referring to aesthetic properties, is referring not ultimately to the critic’s subjective reactions, but to genuine properties of the works. With a focus on contemporary discussion conducted in the analytic tradition, as well as on arguments by Hume and Kant, this book characterizes the debate in aesthetics and the philosophy of art concerning aesthetic realism, examining attacks on the objectivity of values, the ‘autonomy thesis’, and Hume’s sentimentalism. Emmanouil Aretoulakis proposes that behind the horror, repulsion, and outrage felt by humanity before images of natural or man-made catastrophes/acts of terror(ism) throughout the centuries lurks a kind of inexplicable individual fascination which is closely connected to the Kantian idea of the disinterested judgement of the beautiful as well as the Burkean concept of delight before real catastrophe. At stake is an aesthetic experience of the beautiful, that most of us, eye witnesses or other, would not be willing to acknowledge due to the immorality of such a concession. That feeling which goes unacknowledged because improper is a forbidden feeling and the aesthetics connected with it is a forbidden aesthetics. The forbidden aesthetics Aretoulakis proposes is naturally dominant in representations of the par excellence terrorist event of the twenty-first century, 11 September 2001, but shows itself also in other catastrophic landmarks in history. For instance, the Hiroshima/Nagasaki nuclear bombing in 1945, or the 1755 Lisbon tsunami, both of which could be characterized, radically, as terrorist manifestations too, regardless of whether the former event took place in the context of a generalized war while the latter emerged as a symptom of natural terrorism, the terrorism of nature. This book will be of interest to philosophers who work on aesthetics and ethics and students in literary studies and psychology.
