Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the original and unabridged text of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, byMark Twain. It is commonly named among the Great American Novels. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Set in a Southern society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published. Huck struggles not only with the challenges of his strenuous journey, but also with the 19th century social climate and the role it forces on him regarding the slave Jim. Throughout the story, Huck is in moral conflict with the received values of the society in which he lives, and while he is unable to consciously refute those values even in his thoughts, he makes a moral choice based on his own valuation of Jim's friendship and human worth, a decision in direct opposition to the things he has been taught. Mark Twain, in his lecture notes, proposes that "a sound heart is a surer guide than an ill-trained conscience" and goes on to describe the novel as"...a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat". Twain began his career writing light, humorous verse, but evolved into a chronicler of the vanities, hypocrisies and murderous acts of mankind. At mid-career, with Huckleberry Finn, he combined rich humor, sturdy narrative and social criticism. Twain was a master at rendering colloquial speech and helped to create and popularize a distinctive American literature built on American themes and language. "Mark Twain gave pleasure – real intellectual enjoyment – to millions, and his works will continue to give such pleasure to millions yet to come ... His humor was American, but he was nearly as much appreciated by Englishmen and people of other countries as by his own countrymen. He has made an enduring part of American literature." —President William Howard Taft

Book Connecting Children with Classics

Download or read book Connecting Children with Classics written by Meagan Lacy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide identifies hundreds of books that can help children develop into engaged readers. Children's librarians, collection development specialists in public libraries, as well as K–8 school librarians and teachers will choose from the best in children's titles. This unique readers' advisory and collection development guide for librarians and others who work with children focuses on readers and their needs, rather than simply categorizing books by their characteristics and features as traditional literature guides do. Taking this unusual perspective brings forth powerful new tools and curricular ideas on how to promote the classics, and how to best engage with young readers and meet their personal and emotional needs to boost interest and engagement. The guide identifies seven reader-driven appeals, or themes, that are essential to successful readers' advisory: awakening new perspectives; providing models for identity; offering reassurance, comfort, strength, and confirmation of self-worth; connecting with others; giving courage to make a change; facilitating acceptance; and building a disinterested understanding of the world. By becoming aware of and tapping into these seven themes, librarians and other educators can help children more deeply connect with books, thereby increasing the odds of becoming lifelong readers. The detailed descriptions of each book provide plot summaries as well as notes on themes, subjects, reading interest levels, adaptations and alternative formats, translations, and read-alikes. This informative guide will also aid librarians in collection development and bibliotherapy services.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn The derivation of the pen name, Mark Twain, from a pilot's call while making soundings on the Mississippi indicates Samuel Clemens' devotion to the river of his youth. To it, and the boats and personalities it bore, America's world-renowned writer owed a lifelong allegiance. His participation in the river's colorful life and his love of its own brand of humor provided the background for those stories which have forever made the world richer. Beginning with his early humorous works of pioneering adventure, Mark Twain developed a career without parallel in American letters and extended it in his later, deeply earnest The Mysterious Stranger and his reverent Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. Samuel Clemens was born in Florida, Mo., on November 30, 1835. At the age of four he was taken to Hannibal, Mo., where his father died four years later. Thrust upon the world, the boy learned to set type, and very early in life became a journeyman printer. After working in various cities in the Middle West and East, he left his trade when he was sixteen years old to become a Mississippi River pilot. During the Civil War he prospected for gold in Nevada and voyaged to the Sandwich Islands. From a post on the Virginia City Enterprise, he went to San Francisco and found welcome there among a circle of writers that included Bret Harte, Artemus Ward and others. The story that brought him early national fame was The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A true book of worth, a classic that lives on in an era of timeless distinction. Early books exude an excellence unlike any from modern times. You will not be dissatisfied with this work. A young adult adventure at its finest. A Glimpse Inside His aunt Polly stood surprised a moment, and then broke into a gentle laugh. "Hang the boy, can''t I never learn anything? Ain''t he played me tricks enough like that for me to be looking out for him by this time? But old fools is the biggest fools there is. Can''t learn an old dog new tricks, as the saying is. But my goodness, he never plays them alike, two days, and how is a body to know what''s coming? He ''pears to know just how long he can torment me before I get my dander up, and he knows if he can make out to put me off for a minute or make me laugh, it''s all down again and I can''t hit him a lick. I ain''t doing my duty by that boy, and that''s the Lord''s truth, goodness knows. Spare the rod and spile the child, as the Good Book says. I''m a laying up sin and suffering for us both, I know. He''s full of the Old Scratch, but laws-a-me! he''s my own dead sister''s boy, poor thing, and I ain''t got the heart to lash him, somehow. Every time I let him off, my conscience does hurt me so, and every time I hit him my old heart most breaks. Well-a-well, man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble, as the Scripture says, and I reckon it''s so. He''ll play hookey this evening, * and [* Southwestern for "afternoon"] I''ll just be obleeged to make him work, tomorrow, to punish him. It''s mighty hard to make him work Saturdays, when all the boys is having holiday, but he hates work more than he hates anything else, and I''ve got to do some of my duty by him, or I''ll be the ruination of the child."
