We can help you find him. When Romiette Cappelle and her best friend, Destiny, decide to order The Scientific Soul Mate System from the back of Heavy Hunks magazine, they're not sure what they're getting into. But Destiny, a self-proclaimed psychic, assures Romi that for $44.99 plus shipping and handling, it's the only way they're ever going to find out who their soul mates really are. If nothing else, maybe Romi will get some insight into that recurring dream she's been having about fire and water. But they never expect that the scented candle and tube of dream ointment will live up to their promises and merge Romiette's destiny with that of Julio Montague, a boy she's just met in the "cosmos" of an Internet chat room. It turns out they go to the same high school, not to mention having almost the same names as Shakespeare's famous lovers! Sweet-scented dreams of Julio have almost overtaken Romi's nightmares... ...when suddenly they return, but this time in real life. It seems the Devildogs, a local gang, violently oppose the relationship of Romiette and Julio. Soon they find themselves haunted by the purple-clad shadows of the gang, and the fire and water of Romiette's dream merge in ways more terrifying -- and ultimately more affirming -- than even Destiny could have foreseen.

Book Germans and African Americans

Download or read book Germans and African Americans written by Larry A. Greene and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germans and African Americans, unlike other works on African Americans in Europe, examines the relationship between African Americans and one country, Germany, in great depth. Germans and African Americans encountered one another within the context of their national identities and group experiences. In the nineteenth century, German immigrants to America and to such communities as Charleston and Cincinnati interacted within the boundaries of their old-world experiences and ideas and within surrounding regional notions of a nation fracturing over slavery. In the post-Civil War era in America through the Weimar era, Germany became a place to which African American entertainers, travelers, and intellectuals such as W. E. B. Du Bois could go to escape American racism and find new opportunities. With the rise of the Third Reich, Germany became the personification of racism, and African Americans in the 1930s and 1940s could use Hitler's evil example to goad America about its own racist practices. Postwar West Germany regained the image as a land more tolerant to African American soldiers than America. African Americans were important to Cold War discourse, especially in the internal ideological struggle between Communist East Germany and democratic West Germany. Unlike many other countries in Europe, Germany has played a variety of different and conflicting roles in the African American narrative and relationship with Europe. It is this diversity of roles that adds to the complexity of African American and German interactions and mutual perceptions over time.

Book Profiles of Italian Americans

Download or read book Profiles of Italian Americans written by Cosmo F. Ferrara and published by . This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonfiction. Italian American Studies. The large majority of the twenty million Italian Americans are law-abiding, hard-working, and accomplished. Yet the image of Italian Americans is often distorted by stereotypes portrayed in popular media. PROFILES OF ITALIAN AMERICANS: ACHIEVING THE DREAM AND GIVING BACK counters those stereotypes with brief sketches of Italian Americans who have achieved success and enriched the lives of others. Included are the well known, such as Fiorello LaGuardia, mayor of New York, and the less known, such as Betty DellaCorte, founder of the first shelter for victims of domestic violence. The collection features A.P. Giannini, who sifted through the rubble following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and established the bank known today as Bank of America, as well as Frances Xavier Cabrini, who founded orphanages, schools, and hospitals for the poor throughout the United States. These thirty-two profiles illustrate a range of Italian American contributions in the arts, business, education, law enforcement, media, medicine, the military, philanthropy, public service, research, science, and sports. This book celebrates with unabashed pride the impressive legacy of Italian American culture.
