Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of Akbar This book is written for all little lads and lasses, but especially for the former, since it is the true - quite true - story of a little lad who lived to be, perhaps, the greatest king this world has ever seen. It is a strange, wild tale this of the adventures of Prince Akbar among the snowy mountains between Kandahar and Kabul, and though the names may be a bit of a puzzle at first, as they will have to be learned by and bye in geography and history lessons, it might be as well to get familiar with them in a story-book; though, indeed, as everybody in it except Roy the Rajput, Meroo the cook boy; Tumbu, the dog; and Down, the cat (and these four may have been true, you know, though they have not been remembered) really lived, I don't know whether this book oughtn't to be considered real history, and therefore A Lesson Book Anyhow, I hope you won't find it dull. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Long before he entered history books as Emperor Akbar, the Great Mughal, Prince Akbar was a brave young boy, growing up alone while his father Humayun was far away, fighting to win back the throne of Hindustan. But he had his faithful companions, a fierce black sheepdog and a clever snow-white cat, to protect him from demons and other dangers. Join him in The Adventures of Prince Akbar as he gets entangled in conspiracies and battles, foils his wicked uncle's attempts to kidnap him and playfully chases a bear over the snow, into a hidden green valley. A timeless classic read by children across the years and countries, The Adventures of Prince Akbar comes now with an introduction by Ruskin Bond and will be a book to treasure for a lifetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emperor Akbar, Vol. 2: A Contribution Towards the History of India in the 16th Century The Count of Noer devoted himself till death to his Emperor Akbar. It was not granted to him to subject the second volume to a complete elaboration. As I was entrusted by the Countess of N oer with the duty of carrying out the author's design, his papers were made over to me, and also valuable pencil-notes which had been made by him in the books of the Noer library. With this guidance I believe that I have carried out the intentions of the author as far as possible. Much space has been given to extracts from the sources, or original records. The use of them is one of the great charms of the book. They are new, and as yet have been little worked, and the translations are certainly defective. But it is to be hoped that one result of this attempt will be to stir up inquirers to undertake a new handling of the origins of our information about this great his. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Emperor Akbar, Vol. 1: A Contribution Towards the History of India in the 16th Century; Translate, and in Part Revised This lady, Countess Henriette von daneskiold-samsoee, was one of those women without fame who are amongst the potent factors of human history by reason of their power to guide. She was the object of her children's reverential af fection and it may be said of her with truth, that her ef fluence was tenderness. Years after she has gone to her rest, a. Stranger finds the perfume of her character clinging round the home of her early married life, in traditions of her gracious presence and benign thoughtfulness. It was she who fostered, by Sharing, her son's bias to books and She supported him too in his at times, self-willed divergence from his father's plans. She was an invalid during most of her life and there is ample suggestion in the volume from which most of the material for this sketch of her son's life is gathered (letters and Extracts) that the young prince, to gether with her happy gifts of mind and temper, inherited from her also that delicacy of constitution which alloyed his life. It was partly in consequence of this delicacy and partly a result of his father's predilection for a manly military train ing that the boy's education was desultory and insufficient. It was not, he says, till 1848 that he had a tutor who gave him any conception of what to learn meant. With this teacher, a gentleman named Knuth, he was in that year in his usual summer home of N oer and reading Greek and Latin with seeming profit when his studies were rudely interrupted by the outbreak of the rebellion in the Duchies. Book excerpt: The 1977 blockbuster Amar Akbar Anthony about the heroics of three Bombay brothers separated in childhood became a classic of Hindi cinema and a touchstone of Indian popular culture. Beyond its comedy and camp is a potent vision of social harmony, but one that invites critique, as the authors show.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Akbar, Emperor of India: A Picture of Life and Customs From the Sixteenth Century A closer observation, however, shows that the contrast is not quite so harsh between what according to our hypoth eses Akbar should have been as a result of the forces which build up man, and what he actually became. His predilec tion for' science and art Akbar had inherited from his grandfather Baber and his father Humayun. His youth, which was passed among dangers and privations, in flight and in prison, was certainly not without a beneficial in fluence upon Akbar's development into a man of unusual power and energy. And of significance for his spiritual development was the circumstance that after his accession to the throne his guardian put him in the charge of a most excellent tutor, the enlightened and liberal minded Persian Mir Abdullatif, who laid the foundation for Akbar's later religious and ethical views. Still, however high we may value the influence of this teacher, the main point lay in Akbar's own endowments, his susceptibility for such teach ing as never before had struck root with any Mohammedan prince. Akbar had not his equal in the history of Islam. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
