Book excerpt: Moses was, according to the Hebrew Bible and Qur'an, a religious leader, lawgiver and prophet, to whom the authorship of the Torah is traditionally attributed. The Adopted Son, The Story of Moses follows the life of Moses in a manor tailored to the young reader. The day approached when, according to the Egyptian astrologers, the liberator of the children of Israel was to be born. Since they did not know whether he would be of Jewish or Egyptian descent, all male children born that day, were to be thrown into the water by order of King Pharaoh. It was Amram's youngest son Moses who was destined to lead the children of Israel from Egypt and to receive for them the Holy Torah on Mount Sinai. This is an excellent short volume on Moses for your child to read or for you to read to them.

Book excerpt: THE STORY OF MOSES ABRAHAM, a descendant of Shem, one of the sons of Noah, was the father and founder of the great Israelitish, or Hebrew, nation. God chose him from all the people living on the earth at that time, for this purpose, promising that He would make his name great and that his descendants should have for their own the land of Canaan, a country in Palestine lying west of the river Jordan and the Dead Sea. Abraham had a son named Isaac, who became the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of twelve sons, among whom was Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers when but a boy. Joseph was taken to Egypt and in time rose from a slave to be the governor of that country under Pharaoh, its king.

Download or read book Home for Good written by Krish Kandiah and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tying in to a nationwide joint campaign by the Evangelical Alliance and Care for the Family, Krish Kandiah wants us all to take seriously Jesus's call to 'suffer the little children' by engaging with the needs of the many thousands of children up and down the country who are in care and whom the church could and should be helping. Krish and his wife Miriam have adopted and fostered children themselves and their experience - and that of the many others in this book - is very different from the popular myth which suggests social services seek to prevent Christians from getting involved. Krish argues that whatever the state's stance may be, it is a part of our calling as God's church to get involved where it's hardest, and to help these children out of the tough realities they find themselves in. Filled with stories from people who have adopted or were adopted themselves, alongside practical advice on how it all works and the challenges that will come, this book makes a compelling case that the church can and must make a difference in these children's lives, and asks us all to consider our response.

Book Children in Ancient Israel

Download or read book Children in Ancient Israel written by Shawn W. Flynn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flynn contributes to the emerging field of childhood studies in the Hebrew Bible by isolating stages of a child's life, and through a comparative perspective, studies the place of children in the domestic cult and their relationship to the deity in that cult. The study gathers data relevant to different stages of a child's life from a plethora of Mesopotamian materials (prayers, myths, medical texts, rituals), and uses that data as an interpretive lens for Israelite texts about children at similar stages such as: pre-born children, the birth stage, breast feeding, adoption, slavery, children's death and burial rituals, childhood delinquency. This analysis presses the questions of value and violence, the importance of the domestic cult for expressing the child's value beyond economic value, and how children were valued in cultures with high infant mortality rates. From the earliest stages to the moments when children die, and to the children's responsibilities in the domestic cult later in life, this study demonstrates that a child is uniquely wrapped up in the domestic cult, and in particular, is connected with the deity. The domestic-cultic value of children forms the much broader understanding of children in the ancient world, through which other more problematic representations can be tested. Throughout the study, it becomes apparent that children's value in the domestic cult is an intentional catalyst for the social promotion of YHWHism.

Book My Father s Tears

  • Author : Mark Stibbe
  • Publisher : SPCK
  • Release : 2014-09-18
  • ISBN : 0281071772
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book My Father s Tears written by Mark Stibbe and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a new look at the interrelationship of the Father and the Son at Calvary, Mark Stibbe explores the Father's agony at seeing his son in pain; the son suffering the Father's absence, and the Holy Spirit as the bond of love between the two, holding them in an eternal embrace. The author relates this to the orphan condition of separation and shame he has known personally in his own life. He suggests that in the excruciating picture of the grieving Father and the abandoned Son, we paradoxically discover the exhilarating Good News: that our true identity is as the adopted, much-loved children of a God who longs to honour and heal us.
