Book The Adirondacks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Adirondacks Classic Reprint written by Thomas Morris Longstreth and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adirondacks It had been raining for almost ten days, and we were getting short of small-talk, when Lynn made his suggestion. "Let's look ahead," he said. "We've remembered the sugar and the lantern and the dish-towel, but we've left out the most important thing of all." "Not matches," I said, "and there's lots of punky dope left. What do you mean?" "This trip needs an underlying motive," he went on, "or it'll peter out. It's good enough fun fishing, and it's good enough fun getting lost, but it'd be a whole lot better if there was a reason for doing these things. I think I've got one!" I paid more attention to the fire than I did to him, because he's always gratifying his passion for making good things better, while I like to gratify mine for letting them alone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Adirondacks in Eighteen Days I have no good reason to assign, or excuse to offer, for the publication of this work, except the earnest request and solicitation of my fellow committeemen. Its lines of narration, as will be noted, are not wholly original, but have been selected from well-known authors, to whom I here acknowledge warm obligation. The work was originally intended for a legislative report, as all who spend the time and do me the honor to read it will observe. But on account of its voluminousness it was thought best to transmit a synopsis of the same to that body, and to submit the original to the general public. This book is therefore dedicated to all who are of hunter breed and blood and are interested in the preservation of the forests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Adirondack Pipe: Memories of a Pleasant Month Spent in the Adirondacks And when I sit in my easy chair, with my feet perched up high, the taste of my Adirondack pipe on my lips and its fragrance filling my nostrils, I feel my blood run faster, my eyes brighten, my senses dilate, my whole being pulsate, as when I stand under the broad blue sky, of the beloved Adirondack woods. The smoke from its bowl rises faster and thicker, and as its clouds encircle my head, the pictures gradually fade from the walls of my room, the light changes, and I see once more before me, the scenes of my first day in the mountains. Oh! The glorious ride on the stage top, that perfect September day Through the cool crisp air of the early morning. Many which the woodman's axe has spared lie upon the ground, and were it not for the velvet moss which hides their decay, their prostrate forms would' awaken saddening thoughts. Nature is constantly changing. SO it is with you and me. NO mind was ever made for constant work, nor has a human body ever been fashioned for inces sant toil. In this respect, mind and body follow the plant world. And just as there are times when vegetation is to bloom and to distribute its life, and a time also for its forces to rest, so there are periods when mind and body should be Specially active; and when likewise they should lend them16 sunda 78 IN the adirondacks. You can't help me, can you, old chap? You would, if you could. I know it. Nose them, if you wish. They are as much yours as mine; you had quite as much to do with the killing of them. Book The High Peaks of the Adirondacks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The High Peaks of the Adirondacks Classic Reprint written by Robert Marshall and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High Peaks of the Adirondacks This is the first of a series of publications to be issued from time to time by The Adirondack Mountain Club for distribution to its members and for general sale as facts and features are discovered or collected relating to the Adirondacks and deemed worthy of permanent record in this manner. In the present case it is believed that the Club is publishing, in accordance with its policy and its aims and purposes, a manuscript which is of decided interest and value. The achievement of the author of this article and his companions in climbing forty-two of the high peaks of the Adirondacks is stimulating to the cause of mountaineering in northern New York. Furthermore the piece will occupy a unique place in the bibliography of our New York State mountains, for undoubtedly the Marshall brothers and their guide are the only persons who have stood on the tops of all of the mountains described. The author is a charter member of The Adirondack Mountain Club, and he is turning his manuscript over to the Club as a contribution to the work of the organization. In granting permission for its publication, Mr. Marshall asked that it be made clear that he wrote only as the scribe and is speaking as much for "Herb" Clark, the guide, and George Marshall, his brother, as for himself. A word as to the interesting "rating" of the mountains which Mr. Marshall has included in his article. This of course is not to be taken as a standard set up by the Club.
