In the United States, sex education is more than just an uncomfortable rite of passage: it's a political hobby horse that is increasingly out of touch with young people’s needs. In Touchy Subject, philosopher Lauren Bialystok and historian Lisa M. F. Andersen unpack debates over sex education, explaining why it’s worth fighting for, what points of consensus we can build upon, and what sort of sex education schools should pursue in the future. Andersen surveys the history of school-based sex education in the United States, describing the key question driving reform in each era. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was- to explore minority adolescents' attitudes towards sex education. The study group participants were twenty-six African-American youths and four Hispanic youths involved in a church youth group. All the subjects lived at home with parents and were attending college, high school or working. The ages of the subjects ranged from 18-22 years (mean average, 19.1). The subjects reported having some previous knowledge about sex obtained from parents, peers or formal sex education programs. A two-part questionnaire with ten items each was used to survey the group's attitudes about sex education. The first questionnaire focused on the attitudes of sex education in the schools and the second questionnaire examined the timing, content and age appropriateness of sex education to begin with the young child. The results of this study was that there was no significant differences found in attitudes among the group based on gender in regard to the content and timing of sex education. There was no significant difference based on gender on the subject of sex education in schools among the group either. There was a significant difference in the score on the attitudes on content and timing of sex education among the group based on education. The college student scored higher than the high school student and the working adolescent, who scored lower than both the college student and the high school student. The implication is that the lesser education one receives, the more conservative his or her attitudes are about the content and timing of sex education. This research provided insight into the attitudes of 30 minority adolescents towards the content and timing of sex education and sex education given in the schools. Taken as whole, the data revealed that adolescents perceive sex education in schools critical to their overall sexual health and it is as important as the learning the basic academic skills in schools. Recommendations for further studies should include exploring the timing of sex education as well as the implementation of programs that integrate knowledge of one's body with sex education.

Since the 1980s, intense political and cultural battles have been waged between believers in abstinence until marriage and advocates for comprehensive sex education. In The Sex Education Debates, Nancy Kendall upends conventional thinking about these battles by bringing the school and community realities of sex education to life through the diverse voices of students, teachers, administrators, and activists. Drawing on ethnographic research in five states, Kendall reveals important differences and surprising commonalities shared by purported antagonists in the sex education wars, and she illuminates the unintended consequences these protracted battles have, especially on teachers and students. Showing that the lessons that most students, teachers, and parents take away from these battles are antithetical to the long-term health of American democracy, she argues for shifting the measure of sex education success away from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection rates. Instead, she argues, the debates should focus on a broader set of social and democratic consequences, such as what students learn about themselves as sexual beings and civic actors, and how sex education programming affects school-community relations.
