Book The Economy of Food

Download or read book The Economy of Food written by J. Alan Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economy of Food: A Popular Treatise on Nutrition, Food and Diet The interest is largely centered upon the pecuniary aspects of the subject. The prices quoted are, in most cases, those of London stores. They are, of course, liable to fluctuation; but they represent, as nearly as could be ascertained, the average prices prevailing in different parts of the country. All calculations in which prices are involved are explained in detail and the reader can therefore adjust any possible differences due to this cause. In regard to the method of estimating the relative pecuniary values of foods which the author has ventured to propound in Chapter XIV, there may be room for some difference of opinion. The object might, perhaps, have been achieved by other means but most of the methods hitherto adopted have proved unsatisfactory to the class of reader chiefly concerned. The calculated results given in the tables will be found easily intelligible and convenient in form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cities Peasants and Food in Classical Antiquity

Download or read book Cities Peasants and Food in Classical Antiquity written by Peter Garnsey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen essays in the social and economic history of the ancient world, by a leading historian of classical antiquity, are here brought conveniently together. Three overlapping parts deal with the urban economy and society, peasants and the rural economy, and food-supply and food-crisis. While focusing on eleven centuries of antiquity from archaic Greece to late imperial Rome, the essays include theoretical and comparative analyses of food-crisis and pastoralism, and an interdisciplinary study of the health status of the people of Rome using physical anthropology and nutritional science. A variety of subjects are treated, from the misconduct of a builders' association in late antique Sardis, to a survey of the cultural associations and physiological effects of the broad bean.

Book Between Town and Monastery Peasant economy in the first millennium AD

Download or read book Between Town and Monastery Peasant economy in the first millennium AD written by Luigi Pinchetti and published by All'Insegna del Giglio. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaches to early medieval peasantry are often polarized, either enhancing the benefits brought by the weakening of aristocratic dominance or emphasizing the limited prospects for peasant development in the absence of a solid extra-regional trade network. This study offers a long-term overview of the peasant economy throughout the 1st millennium AD in the Upper Volturno Basin, between the town of Isernia and the monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno. The reader is presented with data collected from two archaeological surveys, and is invited to scrutinize changes in settlement patterns, ancient land use and ceramic distributions while the main economic center shifted from town to monastery. These proxies of economic performance offer a vantage point to reconstruct the history of agrarian production and of exchange networks in Central Italy, opening a novel outlook on peasant social dynamics at a time when the Roman economic system transitioned into the feudal system. The results show that the “golden age of peasants” was an age of experimentation, forcing to reconsider the role of the peasantry in the making of the feudal economy.

Book Readings in the Economics of the Division of Labor

Download or read book Readings in the Economics of the Division of Labor written by Guang-Zhen Sun and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study of the progressive division of labor is a burgeoning industry in economics in recent years. Classical authors, dating back as early as 500 BC, have made insightful analysts on the determinants and implications of the division of labor. Unfortunately these writings ore rather scattered and not readily accessible. This important book aims to fill this void, serving as a valuable source of reference for scholars interested in the economics of specialization. The volume begins with the precursors of political economy including the ancient Greeks, medieval Islamic scholastics and mercantilists, continues with the classical political economists and the neoclassicists, and concludes with the Austrian economists such as Hayek in The 1940s. It covers major themes and perspectives about the division of labor that have ever emerged in the discipline of the economic science, including the economics of increasing returns to specialization, the twin ideas of division of labor and the extent of the market, the theory of the spontaneous market order, coordination in the factory system and large scale manufactures, knowledge and the division of mental labor, integration of analyses of specialization into the neoclassical framework, etc.
