Book Advances in formal Slavic linguistics 2016

Download or read book Advances in formal Slavic linguistics 2016 written by Denisa Lenertová and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Formal Slavic Linguistics 2016 initiates a new series of collective volumes on formal Slavic linguistics. It presents a selection of high quality papers authored by young and senior linguists from around the world and contains both empirically oriented work, underpinned by up-to-date experimental methods, as well as more theoretically grounded contributions. The volume covers all major linguistic areas, including morphosyntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonology, and their mutual interfaces. The particular topics discussed include argument structure, word order, case, agreement, tense, aspect, clausal left periphery, or segmental phonology. The topical breadth and analytical depth of the contributions reflect the vitality of the field of formal Slavic linguistics and prove its relevance to the global linguistic endeavour. Early versions of the papers included in this volume were presented at the conference on Formal Description of Slavic Languages 12 or at the satellite Workshop on Formal and Experimental Semantics and Pragmatics, which were held on December 7-10, 2016 in Berlin.

Book Developments in the Acquisition of Clitics

Download or read book Developments in the Acquisition of Clitics written by Kleanthes K. Grohmann and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume presents new theoretical and empirical findings on the acquisition and development of clitics in and across different languages. It features ten chapters that largely emerged from the CYCL1A Workshop on the Acquisition of Clitics held in Nicosia, Cyprus, in May 2012. These chapters explore issues pertaining to the first (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition of clitic pronouns. There is an emphasis on Greek, with the first four chapters discussing mono- and bilingual acquisition of clitics in Cypriot Greek and the next two chapters on Standard Modern Greek. Three contributions focus on Albanian, Serbo-Croatian, and European Portuguese, respectively. The last chapter of this volume is an invited contribution by Ken Wexler on the Unique Checking Constraint as an explanation of clitic omission in normal and SLI development. This volume will constitute a valuable reference guide for current work on the acquisition of clitic pronouns.

Book Clitic Combinations in Spanish

Download or read book Clitic Combinations in Spanish written by Anahí Alba de la Fuente and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of clitic clusters and the restrictions that surface when two or more clitics are combined have long intrigued linguists and, as such, clitic phenomena are at the core of an ever-growing body of research in linguistic theory. However, three aspects remain largely unexplored when it comes to clitic cluster constraints, namely the evolution of these restrictions through time, the perception and processing of different clitic combinations, both acceptable and unacceptable, by native speakers and the acquisition of such combinations by non-native speakers. This dissertation, which focuses on 1st and 2nd person clitic clusters in Spanish, aims to shed new light on clitic phenomena with a new analysis and new data from all these perspectives. Specifically, I study the effects that case and marked features have on Spanish clitic combinations, both synchronically and diachronically. In addition, I explore the effects of clitic combination restrictions in language processing and analyze the learnability issues derived from such restrictions in three groups of speakers of Spanish as a second language whose L1s are English, French and Romanian, respectively. At a particular level, this dissertation is a study of clitic cluster constraints from different perspectives, both traditional and new, namely linguistic theory, diachrony, language processing and language acquisition. At a general level, it constitutes an attempt to explore the ways in which linguistic theory can guide applied research and, conversely, the ways in which experimental data may contribute to linguistic theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on a special type of pronouns and auxiliary verbs, known as clitics, which have a unique grammar. The goal of the book is to compare several different languages to see how they are similar and how they are different. The book is unique in providing a comparison of several scientific theories of grammar as applied to clitics. Each paper deals in some depth with clitics from a particular language or group of languages, including Sanscrit and Hittite, Old Spanish, Balkan Slavic, Old and Modern Germanic, and native Australian languages. Second Position Clitic and Related Phenomena is noteworthy to linguists concerned with the study of universal grammar and others with an established interest in clitics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a qualitative and quantitative study of the changes that occurred in the phrase structure and system of pronominal clitics in medieval and renaissance Spanish, with the goal of explaining the basic differences between the syntactic properties of clitics in Old Spanish and their counterparts in the various dialects of modern Spanish.

Book The Movement Approach and the Base generation Approach a Syntactic Analysis of Spanish Clitics

Download or read book The Movement Approach and the Base generation Approach a Syntactic Analysis of Spanish Clitics written by Adam Cleveland and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The syntax of clitics in Spanish has long been a topic of discussion amongst linguists. There are two traditionally held syntactic approaches for accounting for Spanish clitics: the movement approach and the base-generation approach. Both approaches succeed in capturing certain properties of clitics, but fail in capturing other properties. The literature suggests that 3rd person direct object clitics appear to function as determiners, whereas all other clitics function more as agreement markers. Taking this into account, I propose that the movement approach applies to 3rd person direct object clitics, and that all other clitics are base-generated. In this thesis, I provide a syntactic analysis of both approaches, the movement approach for 3rd person direct object clitics and the base-generation approach for all other clitics. Ultimately, it appears that both approaches can account for these clitics, although there are still a couple of minor problems with the movement approach, which pertain to the motivation for the clitic to move higher up in the syntax once having its agreement features checked, in order to arrive at its surface position."--

Book Clitics in the Wild Empirical Studies on the Microvariation of the Pronominal Reflexive and Verbal Clitics in Bosnian Croatian and Serbian

Download or read book Clitics in the Wild Empirical Studies on the Microvariation of the Pronominal Reflexive and Verbal Clitics in Bosnian Croatian and Serbian written by Zrinka Kolaković and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective monograph is the first data-oriented, empirical in-depth study of the system of clitics on Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. It fills the gap between the theoretical and normative literature by including solid data on variation found in dialects and spoken language and obtained from massive Web Corpora and speakers' acceptability judgements. The authors investigate three primary sources of variation: inventory, placement and morphonological processes. A separate part of the book is dedicated to the phenomenon of clitic climbing, the major challenge for any syntactic theory. The theory of complexity serves as the explanation for the very diverse constraints on clitic climbing established in the empirical studies. It allows to construct a series of hierarchies where the factors relevant for predicting clitic climbing interact with each other. Thus, the study pushes our understanding of clitics away from fine-grained descriptions and syntactic generalisations towards a probabilistic modelling of syntax.

Book The Placement of Clitics in Serbo Croatian

Download or read book The Placement of Clitics in Serbo Croatian written by Bruno Jurilj and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: gut (2,0), Free University of Berlin (JFK Institut für Nordamerikastudien), course: Parameters: typology and variation, language: English, abstract: This paper is offers a short overview of the basic evidence on clitics in Serbian/Croatian. Serbian/Croatian is a language with a virtualy free word order due to ist rich morphological heritage in form of inflections for case, gender and tense marking. In this paper, I am basically concerned with a major exception to this general rule- the position of clitics. Serbo-Croat (nowdays formally divided into three standard languages Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian) has a rich system of clitic forms, including Dative and Accusative pronominal clitics; verbal clitics; which are unstressed forms of finite auxiliary verbs; and the interrogative marker “li“. On the course of this paper I will confront some opposing paradigmas on the rules underlying the structural positon of clitics within the syntax of Serbian/Croatian. .

Book Clitics

Download or read book Clitics written by Joel A. Nevis and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-10-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography provides an alphabetical listing of over 1500 articles, books, and dissertations that treat in some way the topic of clitics and related matters, e.g. affixes, words, word order, movement, sandhi, etc. The beginning point for the bibliographic entries is 1892, taking Jacob Wackernagel's classic work as the point of departure, and the entries cover the subsequent 100-year period. Each entury is accompanied by a series of descriptors which give an indication of the content of the item. Nearly one-third of the book is a detailed analytic index, based on the descriptors, which can aid in topical searches for relevant material. Prefatory matter includes an essay “What is a Clitic?” by Arnold M. Zwicky, a brief consideration of Wackernagel's scholarly career by Brian D. Joseph, and information on the format and use of the book itself.

Book The Acquisition of Italian

Download or read book The Acquisition of Italian written by Adriana Belletti and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major contribution to the study of language acquisition and language development inspired by theoretical linguistics has been made by research on the acquisition of Italian syntax. This book offers an updated overview of results from theory-driven experimental and corpus-based research on the acquisition of Italian in different modes (monolingual, early and late L2, SLI, etc.), as well as exploring possible developments for future research. The book focuses on experimental studies which address research questions generated by linguistic theory, providing a detailed illustration of the fruitful interaction between linguistic theorizing and developmental studies. The authors are leading figures in theoretical linguistics and language acquisition; their own work is featured in the research presented here. Students and advanced researchers will benefit from the systematic review offered by this book and the critical assessment of the field that it provides.

Book The Acquisition of Spanish in Understudied Language Pairings

Download or read book The Acquisition of Spanish in Understudied Language Pairings written by Tiffany Judy and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining the acquisition of Spanish in combination with languages other than English (Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, Farsi, French, German, Nahuatl, Quechua, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish), this volume advances novel data pertinent to the field’s understanding of acquisition of Spanish in the XXI century. Its crosslinguistic nature invites us to reconsider major theoretical questions such as the role of L1 transfer, linguistic typology, and onset of acquisition from a fresh perspective, and to question the validity of the traditional parameter (re)setting perspective taken in SLA. Additionally, this volume underscores the necessity of providing accurate descriptions of the language pairings investigated, emphasizing the interconnection between linguistic and SLA theory, and pushing us to a more atomic view of the system in which features and feature bundles mapped onto lexical items comprise the skeleton of language. This volume is of great relevance for researchers and students of SLA alike.
