Book Managing the Self assessment Process for Accreditation

Download or read book Managing the Self assessment Process for Accreditation written by Stephen A. Olson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project explored how fire departments accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) private sector organizations managed similar projects. The problem was that the Geneva Fire department was not an accredited department. The purpose was to develop a management model for the self-assessment/accreditation process. Historical research was used in the literature review on how private sector organizations managed similar projects and how accredited fire departments managed their projects. Descriptive research was used with the creation of a survey instrument that was faxed or emailed to CFAI-accredited fire departments. The research questions posed were: 1. How did successfully accredited departments structure their self-assessment team? 2. How did accreditation teams conduct the self-assessment process? 3. What would the accreditated departments do differently? The procedure began with a literature review of previous research on the CFAI accreditation process and private sector organization project management programs. Completed surveys were compiled for analysis of the answers. Private sector organizations use project management techniques to manage major projects to their completion. Accredited fire departments used a variety of methods to manage their self-assessment projects, including larger project teams than typically were used in the private sector, multiple project managers and strong support from governing authorities all of which are similar to elements of project management. In general however, accredited departments did not use a formal project management process to focus their efforts. An example of an element of project management would be frequent and clear communication between the chief officer and all levels of the department is important to the success of an accreditation project. The benefits of accreditation must be explained at the start and continually reinforced during the project through open communication. The Geneva Fire Department should pursue accreditation, following the example set by previously accredited departments, and consider using elements of project management. [STAR#: 117544]

Book Legal Institutional and Economic Indicators of Forest Conservation and Sustainable Management

Download or read book Legal Institutional and Economic Indicators of Forest Conservation and Sustainable Management written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This review looks at the Nation's legal, institutional, and economic capacity to promote forest conservation and sustainable resource management. It focuses on 20 indicators of Criterion Seven of the so-called Montreal Process and involves an extensive search and synthesis of information from a variety of sources. It identifies ways to fill information gaps and improve the usefulness of several indicators. It concludes that there is substantial information about the application of such capacities, although that application is widely dispersed among agencies and private interests; which in turn has led to differing interpretations of the indicators. Individual chapters identify a need to further develop the conceptual foundation on which many of the indicators are predicated. While many uncertainties in the type and accuracy of information are brought to light, the review clearly indicates that legal, institutional, and economic capacities to promote sustainability are large and widely available in both the public and private sectors."--P. vi.

Book Active Shooter Events and Response

Download or read book Active Shooter Events and Response written by John P. Blair and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Columbine tragedy on April 20, 1999 began a new era in law enforcement as it became apparent that the police response to such mass shootings must be drastically altered. By the time the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, outdated police response strategies had been replaced with new, aggressive tactics used by the first officers on the scene. The frequency with which these events occur remind us time and again about the importance of training and preparing for these critical situations before they occur in our own backyards. Active Shooter Events and Response is one of the first attempts to not only discuss historic active shooter events, but also to actually dissect some of them—empowering law enforcement professionals by leveraging the essential knowledge and experience of those who have gone before us. The book also offers insight into the training methodologies and strategies used to prepare our nation’s first responders to address the active shooter threat. In addition, the authors discuss the clear and present threat of terrorist organizations using these mass shooter tactics on American soil—similar to the attacks in Beslan, Russia and Mumbai, India. Written by members of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, this book is the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of training and research into active shooter events and represents state-of-the-art, evidence-based best practices.
