Book The Academics of Cicero Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Academics of Cicero Classic Reprint written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Academics of Cicero This translation of Cicero's Academics is intended to form an adjunct to the revised issue of my edition of the Latin text, with explanatory notes (Macmillan, 1885). As the appearance of the new edition was delayed far beyond the time originally fixed, copies of this translation were issued in advance (1880) partly to meet the needs of Cambridge Classical Students at that time. It also occurred to me that a trustworthy rendering of this important book might at the same time prove to have some interest and value for another class of students - those whose special study is philosophy rather than Classics, and who, while wishing to learn something of the early history of their subject, have neither the leisure nor the particular acquirements necessary to enable them to read with profit the ancient philosophical writings in the original languages. I am aware that for such students the history of ancient thought has hitherto practically closed with the name of Aristotle. But it is, I think, beginning to be felt, in Germany at least, that the vast historical importance of the post-Aristotelian systems entitles them to more attention than they have hitherto received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Academica of Cicero: The Text Revised and Explained Mss. If any apology be needed for discussing, even sparingly, in the notes, 'questions of textual criticism, I may say that I have done so from a conviction that the very excellence of the texts now in use is depriving a Classical training of a great deal of its old educa tional value. The judgment was better cultivated when the student had to fight his way through bad texts to the author's meaning and to a mastery of the Latin tongue. The acceptance of results without a knowledge of the processes by which they are obtained is worthless for the purposes of education, which is thus made to rest on memory alone. I have therefore done my best to place before the reader the arguments for and against different readings in the most impor tant places where the text is doubtful. Book The Academic Questions Treatise de Finibus and Tusculan Disputations of M T Cicero

This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Academic Questions, Treatise De Finibus, and Tusculan Disputations, of M. T. Cicero: With a Sketch of the Greek Philosophers Mentioned by Cicero In the works translated in the present volume, Cicero makes such constant references to the doctrines and systems of the ancient Greek Philosophers, that it seems desirable to give a brief account of the most remarkable of those mentioned by him; not entering at length into the history of their lives, but indicating the principal theories which they maintained, and the main points in which they agreed with, or differed from, each other. The earliest of them was Thales, who was born at Miletus, about 640 B.C. He was a man of great political sagacity and influence; but we have to consider him here as the earliest philosopher who appears to have been convinced of the necessity of scientific proof of whatever was put forward to be believed, and as the originator of mathematics and geometry. He was also a great astronomer; for we read in Herodotus (i. 74) that he predicted the eclipse of the sun which happened in the reign of Alyattes, king of Lydia, B.C. 609. He asserted that water is the origin of all things; that everything is produced out of it, and everything is resolved into it. He also asserted that it is the soul which originates all motion, so much so, that he attributes a soul to the magnet. Aristotle also represents him as saying that everything is full of Gods. He does not appear to have left any written treatises behind him: we are uncertain when or where he died, but he is said to have lived to a great age - to 78, or, according to some writers, to 90 years of age. Book Selected Letters of Cicero Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Letters of Cicero Classic Reprint written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Cicero IN editing these selections from Cicero's correspondence, I have attempted to meet the needs of the Freshman who, when he enters college, is suffering from indifferent teaching. This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Life in the Days of Cicero: Sketches Drawn From His Letters and Speeches Life of Cicero, a work full of sound sense, though curiously deficient in scholarship. The publishers and myself hope that the illustrations, giving as there is good reason to believe they do the veritable likenesses of some of the chief actors in the scenes described, will have a special interest. It is not till we come down to comparatively recent times that we find art again lending the same aid to the understanding of history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Life at Rome: In the Age of Cicero Apart from this correspondence and the other literature of the time, my mainstay throughout has been the Privatleben der Rémer of Marquardt, which forms the last portion of the great Handbuch der R'o'mischen Altertn'mcr of Mommsen and Mar quardt. My debt is great also to Professors Tyrrell and Purser, whose labours have provided us with a text of Cicero's letters which we can use with confidence; the citations from these letters have all been verified in the new Oxford text edited by Professor Purser. One other name I must mention With gratitude. I firmly believe that the one great hope for classical learning and education lies in the interest which the unlearned public may be brought to feel in ancient life and thought. We have just lost the veteran French scholar who did more perhaps to create and maintain such an interest than any man of his time; and I gladly here acknowledge that it was Boissier's Cice'ron et ses amis that in my younger days made me first feel the reality of life and character in an age of which I then hardly knew anything but the perplexing political history.
