Book The ABCs of a Troubled Republic

Download or read book The ABCs of a Troubled Republic written by Meg Gorzycki and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See Jack worship; Pray, pray, pray! “Please make me holy, Lord, But not today.” Could it be that God sometimes uses humor to teach us? Here are some raucous rhymes for reflection that will poke and prod at the propriety of our piety. We Americans often wave our Christian credentials around the world, while at the same time being naughty to our neighbors, mired in materialism, and jarringly juvenile. In the style of basal readers, this book takes a swipe at hypocrisy. More than a parody of “See Dick and Jane! Run Spot run!” it invites readers to increase their awareness of the values that make our world a troubled place to be. Read, readers, read! Read every letter. Deep down inside, we can be better!

Book The EIR s Policy of Republican Grand Strategy of the United States

Download or read book The EIR s Policy of Republican Grand Strategy of the United States written by Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr. and published by Executive Intelligence Review. This book was released on with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside this short book, written in the wake of President Reagan’s adoption of Mr. LaRouche’s Beam Defense policy, you will find the philosophical principles of republican statecraft which have entirely reshaped the world over the course of Mr. LaRouche’s lifelong effort to raise the level of civilization up to the level of mankind’s potential. Once collapsed societies, such as China and Russia, have used Mr. LaRouche’s principles along with indigenous cultural strengths to transform themselves into centers of progress and optimism. Even in the United States of America itself, where incredible efforts were made by British Imperial and allied oligarchical rentier-financier interests to entirely suppress republican ideas of science and progress along with all other aspects of LaRouche’s influence, we now begin to see the final triumph of his ideas. So, as you read this book, remember that while many of the particulars of the world situation of 1983 described in this book, such as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, for example, no longer exist, remember that it was the ideas contained within this book and other actions and writings by Mr. LaRouche which lay the basis for the positive transformation in world affairs we see today. While circumstances in the world have changed, Mr. LaRouche’s ideas are of a permanent universal character. The more we act to bring American foreign policy into conformity with those principles, the better will be the future of the American republic and the future of mankind in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pillars of the Republic is a pioneering study of common-school development in the years before the Civil War. Public acceptance of state school systems, Kaestle argues, was encouraged by the people's commitment to republican government, by their trust in Protestant values, and by the development of capitalism. The author also examines the opposition to the Founding Fathers' educational ideas and shows what effects these had on our school system.

Book Shinners Dissos and Dissenters Irish republican media activism since the Good Friday Agreement

Download or read book Shinners Dissos and Dissenters Irish republican media activism since the Good Friday Agreement written by Paddy Hoey and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shinners, dissos, and dissenters is a long-term analysis of the development of Irish republican media activism since 1998 and the tumultuous years that followed the end of the Troubles. It is the first in-depth analysis of the newspapers, magazines and online spaces in which strands of Irish republicanism developed and were articulated in a period in which schism and dissent underscored a return to violence for dissidents. Based on an analysis of Irish republican media outlets as well as interviews with the key activists that produced them, this book provides a compelling snap shot of a political ideology in transition as it is moulded by the forces of the Peace Process and often violent internal ideological schism that threatened a return to the 'bad old days' of the Troubles.

Book The Suicide of Miss Xi

  • Author : Bryna Goodman
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

  • ISBN : 0674259130
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book The Suicide of Miss Xi written by Bryna Goodman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A suicide scandal in Shanghai reveals the social fault lines of democratic visions in China’s troubled Republic in the early 1920s. On September 8, 1922, the body of Xi Shangzhen was found hanging in the Shanghai newspaper office where she worked. Although her death occurred outside of Chinese jurisdiction, her US-educated employer, Tang Jiezhi, was kidnapped by Chinese authorities and put on trial. In the unfolding scandal, novelists, filmmakers, suffragists, reformers, and even a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party seized upon the case as emblematic of deep social problems. Xi’s family claimed that Tang had pressured her to be his concubine; his conviction instead for financial fraud only stirred further controversy. The creation of a republic ten years earlier had inspired a vision of popular sovereignty and citizenship premised upon gender equality and legal reform. After the quick suppression of the first Chinese parliament, commercial circles took up the banner of democracy in their pursuit of wealth. But, Bryna Goodman shows, the suicide of an educated “new woman” exposed the emptiness of republican democracy after a flash of speculative finance gripped the city. In the shadow of economic crisis, Tang’s trial also exposed the frailty of legal mechanisms in a political landscape fragmented by warlords and enclaves of foreign colonial rule. The Suicide of Miss Xi opens a window onto how urban Chinese in the early twentieth century navigated China’s early passage through democratic populism, in an ill-fated moment of possibility between empire and party dictatorship. Xi Shangzhen became a symbol of the failures of the Chinese Republic as well as the broken promises of citizen’s rights, gender equality, and financial prosperity betokened by liberal democracy and capitalism.

Book Getting to Know Ourselves and Others Through the ABCs

Download or read book Getting to Know Ourselves and Others Through the ABCs written by Claudia Finkbeiner and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a valuable resource for teachers and other professionals who are looking for a proven way to increase cultural appreciation and awareness. New applications of the ABCs model of Cultural Understanding and Communication are presented and discussed in this new volume, based on studies done in the United States, and Canada and Europe. In this ground-breaking project, the authors describe how the ABCs model complicated and challenged and changed the cultural perceptions of those who participated in it, even those who were initially highly resistant to such possibilities. At the heart of the project is the exchange of narratives – life stories that give insight into the cultural worlds of selves and others. In addition to the narratives, other instruments including the Transcultural Competence Scale (TCC), provide further evidence of the positive impact of the ABCs on participants' receptivity toward cultural differences. In the TRANSABCs project, researchers from both sides of the Atlantic invited teacher candidates, students who will become workplace and other professionals to write an autobiography (A) of themselves from various cultural perspectives, a biography (B) of an individual who is culturally different from themselves along particular dimensions, and to use these documents to conduct cross-cultural comparisons (C) between themselves and the person they interviewed. Furthermore, candidates developed culturally responsive ideas for the school or the workplace (C). These exchanges and analyses produced epiphanies and insights that translated into specific actions to improve cultural understanding and communication in classrooms and workplaces. Educators and professionals can take from these examples to inspire their own personal journey toward greater cultural understanding and sensitivity.

Book The Indianapolis ABCs

Download or read book The Indianapolis ABCs written by Paul Debono and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indianapolis ABCs were formed around the turn of the century, playing company teams from around the city; they soon played other teams in Indiana, including some white teams. Their emergence coincided with the remarkable growth of black baseball, and by 1916 the ABCs won their first major championship. When the Negro National League was formed in 1920, Indianapolis was one of its charter members. But player raids by the Eastern Colored League, formed in 1923, hurt the ABCs and by the Depression the team was fading into oblivion. The team was briefly resurrected as a Negro league team in the late 1930s, but was otherwise relegated to the semiprofessional ranks until its demise in the 1940s. Through contemporary newspaper accounts, extensive research and interviews with the few former ABC players still living, this is the story of the Indianapolis team and the rise of Negro League baseball. The work includes a roster of ABC players, with short biographies of the most prominent.

Book The ABCs of Socialism

Download or read book The ABCs of Socialism written by Bhaskar Sunkara and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slim, accessible, inexpensive, irreverent introduction to socialism by the writers of Jacobin magazine The remarkable run of self-proclaimed “democratic socialist” Bernie Sanders for president of the United States has prompted—for the first time in decades and to the shock of many—a national conversation about socialism. A New York Times poll in late November found that a majority of Democrats had a favorable view of socialism, and in New Hampshire in February, more than half of Democratic voters under 35 told the Boston Globe they call themselves socialists. It’s unclear exactly what socialism means to this generation, but couple with the ascendancy of longtime leftwinger Jeremy Corbyn to the leadership of the Labour Party in the UK, it’s clear there’s a historic, generational shift underway. This book steps into this moment to offer a clear, accessible, informative, and irreverent guide to socialism for the uninitiated. Written by young writers from the dynamic magazine Jacobin, alongside several distinguished scholars, The ABCs of Socialism answers basic questions, including ones that many want to know but might be afraid to ask (“Doesn’t socialism always end up in dictatorship?”, “Will socialists take my Kenny Loggins records?”). Disarming and pitched to a general readership without sacrificing intellectual depth, this will be the best introduction an idea whose time seems to have come again.
