Book The Book of Evidence

  • Author : Peter Achinstein
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-09-20
  • ISBN : 0198032919
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book The Book of Evidence written by Peter Achinstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-20 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is required for something to be evidence for a hypothesis? In this fascinating, elegantly written work, distinguished philosopher of science Peter Achinstein explores this question, rejecting typical philosophical and statistical theories of evidence. He claims these theories are much too weak to give scientists what they want--a good reason to believe--and, in some cases, they furnish concepts that mistakenly make all evidential claims a priori. Achinstein introduces four concepts of evidence, defines three of them by reference to "potential" evidence, and characterizes the latter using a novel epistemic interpretation of probability. The resulting theory is then applied to philosophical and historical issues. Solutions are provided to the "grue," "ravens," "lottery," and "old-evidence" paradoxes, and to a series of questions. These include whether explanations or predictions furnish more evidential weight, whether individual hypotheses or entire theoretical systems can receive evidential support, what counts as a scientific discovery, and what sort of evidence is required for it. The historical questions include whether Jean Perrin had non-circular evidence for the existence of molecules, what type of evidence J. J. Thomson offered for the existence of the electron, and whether, as is usually supposed, he really discovered the electron. Achinstein proposes answers in terms of the concepts of evidence introduced. As the premier book in the fabulous new series Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Science, this volume is essential for philosophers of science and historians of science, as well as for statisticians, scientists with philosophical interests, and anyone curious about scientific reasoning.

That is because golf is a game where failure is unavoidable. Every shot, every lie, is a unique event involving a multitude of intricate variables, any of which can cause a shot to go awry. But fear not-help is here! Former profession golfer Bob Glanville shares the knowledge he has gained from more than half a century of playing and teaching golf. In Golf: The Game of Lessening Failures, he teaches golfers to eliminate their golfing failures, one swing at a time. He dispenses his wit and wisdom through sixteen chapters that touch upon nearly every aspect of the game, including the equipment, the terminology, the etiquette, and the origins of the PGA. Through it all, readers learn to improve their game physically and mentally, as well as by using a set of clubs that will help them get the most out of every swing. The course awaits.

Final Rounds takes us to the historic courses of Royal Lytham and Royal Birkdale, to the windswept undulations of Carnoustie, where Hogan played peerlessly in '53, and the legendary St. Andrews, whose hallowed course reveals something of the eternal secret of the game's mysterious allure over pros and hackers alike. Throughout their poignant journey, the Dodsons humorously reminisce and reaffirm their love for each other, as the younger Dodson finds out what it means to have his father also be his best friend. Final Rounds is a book never to be forgotten, a book about fathers and sons, long-held secrets, and the lessons a middle-aged man can still learn from his dad about life, love, and family. The GYRA Mental Scorecard allows you to measure your performance against your primary competitor – yourself - per shot, per hole. This is a game-changer. “You may never play golf the same way if you start measuring your mental performance on the golf course.” Gary Player, World Golf Hall of Fame “With the introduction of the GYRA Mental Scorecard, you are now able to track your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to be able to better yourself for future situations.” Jason Gore, Player Relations, USGA “GYRA tools have given me the skills to manage my emotions and thoughts throughout the up’s and down’s of tournament golf.” Seamus Power, Olympian, PGA Tour Player “I have been coaching college golf for 20 years. The difference between a good vs great player is usually their mental approach to the game. The idea of having a scorecard for golfers to describe and track what is happening in their mind is groundbreaking.” Tim Straub, Davidson College “This book should be required curriculum for golf academies, teaching professionals, caddies, and players.” David Ross PGA Lifetime Member, Ross Academy

Book American Golf in the Great Depression

Download or read book American Golf in the Great Depression written by Kevin Kenny and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of professional golf during the Great Depression begins with a look at the "roaring 1920s" and how the game developed during this exciting decade. What a contrast to the Depression era--in which golf at all levels suffered but survived. The Depression years in general are covered and then the professional tour between 1931 and 1940 is examined in detail--the administrators (those who sold the tour to sponsors, the media and the public) and the many wonderful golfers. Much of this is set against the background of how difficult life was for most Americans. The book looks briefly at the post-Depression years (when the U.S. entered World War II) and how the top players fared. Despite the economic difficulties of the era, professional golf survived--largely due to the efforts of players and administrators, not all of whom have been sufficiently recognized by the game and its historians.
