The only problem? Aggie isn't up for the taking. If she gives up her virginity she unlocks her full powers, and loses her life of solitude once her coven finds her. What's a horny virgin to do? It doesn’t matter that he’s my betrothed—I’d been running from him and my coven for the past two decades. My mother finally found me, and betrayed my location. I won’t blame my boys for this. It wasn’t their fault. I wasn’t going to be able to hide my magick forever, so this was inevitable. Seth has me, and will likely claim my virginity, my magick, and my life. I’m only sorry for the pain it will likely bring my boys. Karl, a self-effacing vampire who fusses like a mother hen. Luka, a rowdy werewolf who loudly proclaimed me as his mate the first night I met him. And Quinn. A player warlock who struggles with his feelings for me just as much I struggle with my feelings for him. If I’m about to die, then at least I’ll go down fighting. I owe that much to my coven—those cowards who sold me out just so they wouldn’t feel Seth’s fury themselves. I know it’s going to hurt, but I also know there will be a brief moment when I lose my virginity where the magick will crackle against my skin, and soar through my veins. That is when I must strike—and try to take down as many of them with me as I can…before the incubus claims all of me for himself.

Book excerpt: I didn't want to move to this dumpy, cold rural town. Then again, I didn't want to lose my entire family either. We never get want we want. My aunt told me to stay away from those 'Academy Boys', that something was different about them; something wrong. I know she means well, but I'm not a baby. When Justin gets me accepted into that fancy school of his, I figured it could be a fresh start. I just have to ignore how everyone stares at me, almost as if they're waiting for something to happen. There's an order to things here; a hierarchy. I'm struggling to find where I fit in to all of this. And this old man keeps appearing in my dreams, calling out for help. He babbles about archangels and demons. None of that is real, though. It can't be. That would be utterly ridiculous. ***************** "So, I couldn't put it down. I finished it yesterday evening. I should've been painting yesterday but I blew that off. It was the perfect book, perfect genre to get lost in right now. Is the sequel in the works?" -Kelly L., Missouri I've just finished this book and absolutely loved it. I was engrossed in the story from start to finish. Book excerpt: The treatment—and mistreatment—of women throughout history continues to be a necessary topic of discussion, in order for progress to be made and equality to be achieved. While current articles and books expose troubling truths of the gender divide, modern cinema continues to provide problematic depictions of such behavior—with a few heartening exceptions. The Encyclopedia of Sexism in American Films closely examines the many, pervasive forms of sexism in contemporary productions—from clueless comedies to superhero blockbusters. In more than 130 entries, this volume explores a number of cinematic grievances including: the objectification of women’s bodies the limited character types available for female performers the lack of sexual diversity on the screen the limited range of desirable traits for female performers the use of gratuitous sex the narrow focus on heteronormative depictions of courtship and romance The films discussed here include As Good as It Gets (1999), Beauty and The Beast (2017), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Do the Right Thing (1989), Easy A (2010), The Forty-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Hidden Figures (2016), Lost in Translation (2003), Mulholland Drive (2001), Showgirls (1995), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Star Wars (1977), Thelma & Louise (1991), Tootsie (1982), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), and 9 to 5 (1980). By digging deeply into more insidious forms of sexual/gender discrimination, this book illuminates one more aspect of women’s lives that deserves to be understood. Three blocks down from the Fix-It Witches, Titus Winnaker, owner of Sugar Daddy's bakery, has family trouble of his own. Download or read book The B Word written by Maria San Filippo and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often disguised in public discourse by terms like "gay," "homoerotic," "homosocial," or "queer," bisexuality is strangely absent from queer studies and virtually untreated in film and media criticism. Maria San Filippo aims to explore the central role bisexuality plays in contemporary screen culture, establishing its importance in representation, marketing, and spectatorship. By examining a variety of media genres including art cinema, sexploitation cinema and vampire films, "bromances," and series television, San Filippo discovers "missed moments" where bisexual readings of these texts reveal a more malleable notion of subjectivity and eroticism. San Filippo's work moves beyond the subject of heteronormativity and responds to "compulsory monosexuality," where it's not necessarily a couple's gender that is at issue, but rather that an individual chooses one or the other. The B Word transcends dominant relational formation (gay, straight, or otherwise) and brings a discursive voice to the field of queer and film studies.
Download or read book Genre Gender and the Effects of Neoliberalism written by Betty Kaklamanidou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The romantic comedy has long been regarded as an inferior film genre by critics and scholars alike, accused of maintaining a strict narrative formula which is considered superficial and highly predictable. However, the genre has resisted the negative scholarly and critical comments and for the last three decades the steady increase in the numbers of romantic comedies position the genre among the most popular ones in the globally dominant Hollywood film industry. The enduring power of the new millennium romantic comedy, proves that therein lies something deeper and worth investigating. This new work draws together a discussion of the full range of romantic comedies in the new millennium, exploring the cycles of films that tackle areas including teen romance, the new career woman, women as action heroes, motherhood and pregnancy and the mature millennium woman. The work evaluates the structure of these different types of films and examines in detail the ways in which they choose to frame key contemporary issues which influence how we analyse global politics, including gender, class, race and society. Providing a rich understanding of the complexities and potential of the genre for understanding contemporary society, this work will be of interest to students and scholars of cultural & film studies, gender & politics and world politics in general.
Download or read book Uncomfortable Television written by Hunter Hargraves and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From The Wire to Intervention to Girls, postmillennial American television has dazzled audiences with novelistic seriality and cinematic aesthetics. Yet this television is also more perverse: it bombards audiences with misogynistic and racialized violence, graphic sex, substance abuse, unlikeable protagonists, and the extraordinary exploitation of ordinary people. In Uncomfortable Television, Hunter Hargraves examines how television makes its audiences find pleasure through feeling disturbed. He shows that this turn to discomfort realigns collective definitions of family and pleasure with the values of neoliberal culture. In viscerally violent dramas, cringeworthy ironic comedies, and trashy reality programs alike, televisual unease trains audiences to survive under late capitalism, which demands that individuals accept a certain amount of discomfort, dread, and irritation into their everyday lives. By highlighting how discomfort has been central to the reorganization and legitimization of television as an art form, Hargraves demonstrates television’s role in assimilating viewers into worlds marked by precarity, perversity, and crisis.
Download or read book Deconstructing Masculinity Interrogating the Role of Symbolism in Gender Performativity written by Lauren Dundes and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress towards gender parity is hindered by unconscious ways that hypermasculinity is valorized at a symbolic level. By deconstructing how social and textual phenomena as well as social structures contribute to gender performativity, we can elucidate hard-to-discern patterns that perpetuate hegemonic masculinity. The subliminal elevation of symbols of hypermasculinity excludes both women and non-gender conforming men. By delving into these symbolic meanings that operate subliminally, we can more effectively debunk beliefs that “real men” fall within narrow parameters of masculinity. There remains much to explore in terms of hidden pressures for men to constrain their expression of emotions, project an appearance of hardness, and equate violence with power, to name just a few persistent facets of toxic masculinity. While abstract forms of inculcating hypermasculinity are difficult to identify, interrogating their role in masculine performativity will result in a more comprehensive understanding of impediments to gender equality.
