Book Political Communication in European Parliamentary Elections

Download or read book Political Communication in European Parliamentary Elections written by Michaela Maier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading team of internationally distinguished political communication scholars, this book offers the most comprehensive account on comparative political communication research in the context of European Parliamentary elections to date. Divided into four sections, experts begin by tracing the historical and political background of European Parliamentary elections, paying close attention to trends in turnout and the changing institutional role of the European Parliament (EP). Focusing mainly on the 2009 elections and using original data throughout, the next two sections are devoted to campaign communication strategies and the overall media coverage of EP elections in both established and newly-accessioned members of the European Union. The concluding section focuses on the macro- and micro-level effects of European parliamentary campaigns in a comparative perspective to illustrate how campaign strategies and media coverage were received by voters in EU member states. This insightful account on the interaction between political actors, the media, and voters allows readers to develop a global understanding of political and media system interdependencies and on comparative political communication research more generally. Essential reading to students and scholars in political science, media studies, European politics, and political communication, as well as policy makers within the European Union.

Book Un intended Consequences of European Parliamentary Elections

Download or read book Un intended Consequences of European Parliamentary Elections written by Wouter van der Brug and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When direct elections for the European Parliament were first organized in 1979, the idea was that such direct elections would increase the democratic legitimacy and accountability of the Parliament. Moreover, the elections were expected to raise public interest, engagement and support for the European project. Did these elections help to increase legitimacy and accountability? Did they increase interest in and support for the 'European project'? Or, did these elections have unintended (and perhaps undesirable) consequences? This volume focuses on the consequences of European elections for public debate and involvement, for party systems, and for public opinion. EP elections have caused a number of intended consequences: the salience of the elections in the media has gone up and over time electoral competition becomes more important, engaging in the campaign can help improve EU evaluations, and Europe as a topic has become more important for voting at EP elections, boosting the prevalence of so-called EU voting. A number of intended consequences have not materialized during the life of the EP so far: knowledge or turnout levels have not gone up and citizens have not become better at judging what political parties are offering. The EP elections have, however, also yielded a number of unintended consequences: EP elections dampen turnout for first time voters in subsequent elections, EP elections cause temporary decline in EU support, and the elections have become a strategic arena for political parties to position themselves on EU issues and for new movements and parties to boost or sustain their success.

Book Routledge Handbook of European Elections

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of European Elections written by Donatella M. Viola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of European Elections explores the multifaceted dimension of the European Parliament’s (EP) electoral contests across the European Community and European Union since 1979. After setting a general empirical and theoretical framework, this collaborative project presents original contributions from leading experts from virtually all the corners of the European Union. Each case study adheres to a common template that makes it easy to compare data, methodology and outcomes. Every country chapter includes: a brief geopolitical profile and historical background of the Member State; a glance at the national political landscape; a short account of the main political parties, including their attitude toward the European Union; a section on public opinion and European integration; a summary of electoral systems; an overview of all EP and national elections; an in-depth analysis of the 2009 EP electoral race; an overall theoretical interpretation of European elections. A comparative chapter closes the Handbook followed by an Epilogue focussing on the 2014 EP contest with a detailed analysis of the newly elected European Assembly in terms of political group and gender compostion. The volume aims to enhance readers’ understanding of the European Parliament and revive their interest in the European integration process. By providing a wide range of national and European facts and figures, this investigation represents a comprehensive reference guide to scholars, practitioners, and students of the European Parliament, European elections, political parties, European Union and comparative politics.

Book Political Communication and European Parliamentary Elections in Times of Crisis

This book was released on 2016-12-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tackles the 2014 European Parliamentary election as an event, phenomenon and process from an interdisciplinary but coherent perspective. This edited volume includes research by prestigious academics from the former communist countries in question, all of which have only recently become EU members. The contributors consider whether there is a crisis of Euroscepticism, or, for that matter, extremism of any kind in each country discussed. It will appeal to scholars and graduate students interested in elections and voting behaviour, comparative European politics, and political communication.

Book Political Advertising in the 2014 European Parliament Elections

Download or read book Political Advertising in the 2014 European Parliament Elections written by Christina Holtz-Bacha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely publication offers a fresh scholarly assessment of political advertising across the EU, as well as an insight into differing political and regulatory systems related to political advertising in the individual member states. With a detailed focus on the images and communication styles that characterised the 2014 European Parliament election campaign, this edited collection evaluates political advertising across the EU using empirical data to compare and contrast styles and approaches in different members. This work allows the authors to offer an important evaluation of the similarities and differences in the posters and broadcasts used to win public support in the 2014 campaign at the time of the great European recession and financial crisis, specifically looking at the place of posters and video commercials. This book will appeal to researchers and students of political communication, political science, history, European studies as well as candidates and campaign workers who want a more comprehensive understanding of the representation of Europe in political adverts at the 2014 elections.

Book Re testing the Second Order Model of European Parliamentary Elections

Download or read book Re testing the Second Order Model of European Parliamentary Elections written by Jonathan Polk and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since direct elections to the European Parliament (EP) began in 1979 a number of fundamental questions concerning these events have been discussed and debated. Is vote choice primarily determined by questions of European integration or by domestic political considerations? What explains the relatively poor performance of larger parties and those that govern domestically at the time of the election? Do European voters cast their ballots sincerely or strategically at EP elections? What explains the decision of a voter to choose a different party in European elections than the voter chose in the national contest? Are those that choose to participate in European elections substantively different from those that don't? After thirty years of European Parliament elections, these central questions still animate much research on voting in Europe.
