Book Systems Analysis in Forest Resources

Download or read book Systems Analysis in Forest Resources written by Michael Bevers and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2003 symposium of systems analysis in forest resources brought together researchers and practitioners who apply methods of optimization, simulation, management science, and systems analysis to forestry problems. This was the 10th symposium in the series, with previous conferences held in 1975, 1985, 1988, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, and 2002. The forty-two papers in these proceedings are organized into five application areas: (1) sustainability, criteria and indicators, and assessment; (2) techniques and decision support for forest planning; (3) forest assessment and planning case studies; (4) fire suppression, fire planning, and fuels management; (5) harvest scheduling; and (6) mill supply and forest product markets.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 1988 Symposium on Systems Analysis in Forest Resources: March 29 to April 1, 1988, Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, California In 1975, the Society of American Foresters' Systems Analysis Working Group sponsored a Working Group Symposium on Systems Analysis in Forest Resources Management. This meeting was held in Athens, George at the University of Georgia. In 1985, after a hiatus of 10 years, a second symposium was held at the same location. During this meeting, it was agreed to start holding those meetings every three years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one were forced to use a single key word to describe the decade of the 1980's, a very prominent one would be "technology. " Leading the forefront of tech nology advancement were breakthroughs in electronics. Devices that were uncommon or unknown in 1980 became commonplace, and almost indispens able, by 1989. This trend has continued into the 1990's and it does not seem to be abating in any way. Microwave ovens, video recorders, telephone answer ing machines, compact disc players, computers, and a host of smaller or less sophisticated devices now appear in most households. The development of small and inexpensive computers, i. e. , personal computers, has placed computing resources within reach of many more people. In addition, many traditional, and largely mechanical devices, have been enhanced by electronics. For example, specialized microprocessors are combined with arrays of electronic sensors to control and monitor sophisticated engineering components in most new auto mobiles. In this and many other ways, we are touched by the new electronics in almost every aspect of our daily lives. Initially, personal computers were little more than toys. They contained only a small fraction of the computing power of their immediate ancestors, the mini computers and mainframe computers. However, rapid improvements in integ rated circuit design and chip manufacture produced regular reductions in size and cost of computer components. During the same time, processor speed and sophistication increased.
