Download or read book Islands in Transition written by Thomas Kemper Hitch and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has Hawaii, from the times of Polynesian antiquity to the present, enjoyed the highest material standard of living in Oceania? How did changes in the social structure of pre-Cook Hawaii affect that standard? What happened to the islands' economy as western dominance took place, as land ownership was created, as technology was imported, as plantation workers immigrated, as World War II broke the social mold of the islands? These are some of the basic questions raised by Thomas Hitch in "Islands in Transition," the first book-length economic history of Hawaii to be printed in a generation. The book is divided into two sections. The first, "From the Record,"traces the development of Hawaii's economy from the moneyless, sharing, tribute, and barter system of the native culture to a plantation economy controlled from Honolulu and dominated by the Big Five. In the second section, "As I Saw it," Dr. Hitch describes the further development of Hawaii into a high-tech service economy, heavily based on tourism and military expenditures, increasingly involved in the multi-national global economy. He appraises the recent past and projects the future from the vantage point of his long career at Honolulu business community, first as director of research for the Hawaii Employers Council and then as Senior Vice President for Research at First Hawaiian Bank, until his death in August, 1989. This volume is written for the general reader, but appendices address questions of particular interest to economists and business analysts. These include measuring the cost of living in Hawaii, estimating the growth rate of the state economy, and appraising its sensitivity to the national business cycle.
Download or read book The Rise of the Entrepreneurial State written by Peter K. Eisinger and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of the Entrepreneurial State charts the development of state and local government initiatives to influence the market and strengthen economic development policies. This trend marked a decisive break from governments' traditionally small role in the affairs of private industry that defined the relationship between the public and private sector for the first half of the twentieth century. The turn to state and local government intervention signaled a change in subnational politics that, in many ways, transcended partisan politics, regional distinctions ,and racial alliances. Eisinger's meticulous research uncovers state and local governments' transition from supply-side to demand-side strategies of market creation. He shows that, instead of relying solely on the supply-side strategies of tax breaks and other incentives to encourage business relocation, some governments promoted innovation and the creation of new business approaches.
Download or read book Developing a Dream Destination written by James Mak and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing a Dream Destination is an interpretive history of tourism and tourism policy development in Hawai‘i from the 1960s to the twenty-first century. Part 1 looks at the many changes in tourism since statehood (1959) and tourism’s imprint on Hawai‘i. Part 2 reviews the development of public policy toward tourism, beginning with a story of the planning process that started around 1970—a full decade before the first comprehensive State Tourism Plan was crafted and implemented. It also examines state government policies and actions taken relative to the taxation of tourism, tourism promotion, convention center development and financing, the environment, Honolulu County’s efforts to improve Waikiki, and how the Neighbor Islands have coped with explosive tourism growth. Along the way, author James Mak offers interpretations of what has worked, what has not, and why. He concludes with a chapter on the lessons learned while developing a dream destination over the past half century.
