Book Greenspan Counsel

Download or read book Greenspan Counsel written by Sidney Lewis Jones and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This economic policy history describes the policy views and counsel provided by Alan Greenspan when he served as the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Ford Administration. The author, Dr. Sidney L. Jones, who served as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy, eloquently presents his experiences while working with Greenspan. In addition, Dr. Jones performed extensive research through a complete review of the files at the Gerald R. Ford Library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to produce a valuable historical record for scholars, policy makers, and students of contemporary American politics. The study begins with a review of Greenspan's philosophy and methodology. It describes the unexpected formation of the Ford Administration following the resignation of President Nixon. The anti-inflation package of economic policies proposed by the new officials was immediately overwhelmed by a collapse of economic activity caused by cyclical factors and unusual external stress. Greenspan created a unique "weekly GNP" to track the volatile conditions. He recognized that the sharp downturn was caused by the extreme liquidation of inventories rather than a failure of final demand. His policy recommendations focused on stable long-term recovery and reduction of the disruptive double-digit rate of inflation. The study then describes the business cycle recovery marked from March 1975. Greenspan's strong leadership helped to sustain monetary and fiscal policies and the deregulation of economic activities coupled with the avoidance of an increase in government planning and control of the domestic and global economic system. The last chapter summarizes the policy lessons that now support stable monetary and fiscal policies. Book jacket.

Book American Vietnamese Relations in the Wake of War

Download or read book American Vietnamese Relations in the Wake of War written by Cécile Menétrey-Monchau and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Vietnam War ended with the North Vietnamese capture of Saigon on April 30, 1975--27 months after a cease-fire had been signed in Paris--the differences between the United States and Vietnam were far from being resolved. Mutual bitterness regarding the war remained. Newly unified Vietnam wanted normalization of relations and the subsequent economic reconstruction aid promised in the Paris Peace Accords. Understandably wary of such diplomatic relations, the United States requested information regarding soldiers listed as missing in action and assistance with the repatriation of military remains. A series of misconceptions and misunderstandings as well as changes from a regional to a global U.S. foreign policy left both countries bereft of an easy solution. This book describes the negotiations during the late Ford and early Carter administrations (1975-1979) and discusses the repercussions the diplomatic stalemate had on the domestic and international politics of the United States and Vietnam, emphasizing the conflicting priorities and political goals of both countries, at home and abroad. This previously neglected period in United States-Vietnam relations deals with issues such as Hanoi's constant exultation over the victory, American denial of responsibility, the division between the presidents' public declarations and congressional policies, and both sides' use of the MIA issue. Based primarily on recently declassified documents and former U.S. official Douglas Pike's uncensored collection, the work also makes use of media press sources from America, Vietnam, Britain, France and China. Interviews with Vietnamese immigrants and former U.S. politicians provide insight unavailable in written histories. Appendices contain the February 1973 correspondence between President Nixon and the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, six diplomatic notes from 1976, and a January 30, 1979, letter from President Carter to Chinese Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping.

Book Milton Friedman Economic Debate in the United States 1932 1972 Volume 2

Download or read book Milton Friedman Economic Debate in the United States 1932 1972 Volume 2 written by Edward Nelson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second in a two-volume study of the Nobel Prize winner’s long career: “Nelson knows more about Milton Friedman’s economics than anyone else alive.” —Business Economics This study is the first to distill Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman’s vast body of writings into an authoritative account of his research, his policy views, and his interventions in public debate. With this ambitious new work, Edward Nelson closes the gap: Milton Friedman and Economic Debate in the United States is the defining narrative on the famed economist, the first to grapple comprehensively with Friedman’s research output, economic framework, and legacy. This two-volume account provides a foundational introduction to Friedman’s role in several major economic debates that took place in the United States between 1932 and 1972. This second volume covers the years between 1960 and 1972—years that saw the publication of Friedman and Anna Schwartz’s Monetary History of the United States. The book also covers Friedman’s involvement in a number of debates in the 1960s and 1970s, on topics such as unemployment, inflation, consumer protection, and the environment. As a fellow monetary economist, Nelson writes from a unique vantage point, drawing on both his own expertise in monetary analysis and his deep familiarity with Friedman’s writings. Using extensive documentation, the book weaves together Friedman’s research contributions and his engagement in public debate, providing an unparalleled analysis of Friedman’s views on the economic developments of his day. “No previous biographer has Nelson’s deep and sophisticated understanding of monetary economics.” —Economic History
