Book excerpt: When the CIA comes knocking at ex-Texas Ranger Jeremiah Spur's door, asking for a favor, he's not that interested in helping. At least, not until the agent mentions that the man-Benjamin Farkas-who needs help requested Jeremiah specifically because he knew Jeremiah's father. Since Jeremiah hasn't seen his father since he was a little boy, this piques his interest, and he reluctantly agrees to travel from his ranch in tiny Brenham, Texas, to the big city-Austin-in order to investigate the disappearance of an accountant, who has vanished along with $10 million of his boss's money. The fact that Farkas was once a CIA-trained button man makes him uncomfortable, but the question of his father's connection means he can't say no. At the same time, Deputy Sheriff Clyde Thomas-a black man in a rural Texas jurisdiction who worked with Jeremiah on the last murder case to hit Brenham-is looking into the shooting deaths of a local drug dealer and his girlfriend, a violent and nasty crime for the usually quiet town. Clyde's working theory is that it's a message in a battle over drug territory, but there are a lot of questions. It seems unlikely that Captain Spur's case and Deputy Thomas's case are related. But in all things criminal, even in sleepy Brenham, Texas, things are rarely what they seem. Scared Money-explosive, sharp, taut, and atmospheric-is the second book to feature Jeremiah and Clyde, after James Himes' acclaimed first novel, The Night of the Dance, which was a finalist for the Edgar Award for best first novel of the year.

Book I Ain t Studdin Ya

Download or read book I Ain t Studdin Ya written by Bobby Rush and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience music history with this memoir by one of the last of the genuine old school Blues and R&B legends, the Grammy-winning dynamic showman Bobby Rush. This memoir charts the extraordinary rise to fame of living blues legend, Bobby Rush. Born Emmett Ellis, Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he adopted the stage name Bobby Rush out of respect for his father, a pastor. As a teenager, Rush acquired his first real guitar and started playing in juke joints in Little Rock, Arkansas, donning a fake mustache to trick club owners into thinking he was old enough to gain entry. He led his first band in Arkansas between Little Rock and Pine Bluff in the 1950s. It was there he first had Elmore James play in his band. Rush later relocated to Chicago to pursue his musical career and started to work with Earl Hooker, Luther Allison, and Freddie King, and sat in with many of his musical heroes, such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Little Walter. Rush eventually began leading his own band in the 1960s, crafting his own distinct style of funky blues, and recording a succession of singles for various labels. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Rush finally scored a hit with "Chicken Heads." More recordings followed, including an album which went on to be listed in the Top 10 blues albums of the 1970s by Rolling Stone and a handful of regional jukebox favorites including "Sue" and "I Ain't Studdin' Ya." And Rush's career shows no signs of slowing down now. The man once beloved for performing in local jukejoints is now headlining major music/blues festivals, clubs, and theaters across the U.S. and as far as Japan and Australia. At age eighty-six, he is still on the road for over 200 days a year. His lifelong hectic tour schedule has earned him the affectionate title "King of the Chitlin' Circuit," from Rolling Stone. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the first blues artist to play at the Great Wall of China. His renowned stage act features his famed shake dancers, who personify his funky blues and his ribald sense of humor. He was featured in Martin Scorcese's The Blues docuseries on PBS, a documentary film called Take Me to the River, performed with Dan Aykroyd on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and most recently had a cameo in the Golden Globe nominated Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy. He was recently given the highest Blues Music Award honor of B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. His songs have also been featured in TV shows and films including HBO's Ballers and major motion pictures like Black Snake Moan, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Considered by many to be the greatest bluesman currently performing, this book will give readers unparalleled access into the man, the myth, the legend: Bobby Rush.

Book if your man isn t stepping his game up would you propose to him

Download or read book if your man isn t stepping his game up would you propose to him written by TJ Clemons and published by TJ Clemons. This book was released on with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a topic that comes up from time to time and I’m looking forward to the opinions of men and women. The roles of women in our modern society are constantly changing to keep up with the times. There are many independent females who are often making more money than their male counterparts. Many women are single parents and run their households. The male and female roles in relationships and marriages are no longer set in stone. The question then becomes with all of these new powers females often become the decision makers in the home. So when the right man finally comes along that she can’t live without, is it ok for her to move forward and propose to him? Some people will agree with this notion while others will outright disagree. Women have fought for equal rights and equality in all aspects of life, so why shouldn’t they have the ability to ask the man that they are in love with for his hand in marriage? It is a natural progression in the evolutionary process. Let the debate begin. Chime in with your opinion on this controversial topic of conversation.

Returning to Earth, Baron finds that he has been declared legally dead, his commission rescinded, and all his possessions reverted to the State.
