Book excerpt: Thailand's economic and social transformation of the last 50 years has placed it in the ranks of upper middle-income countries and made it an integral part of global value chains. It has also established itself as a regional hub for key transport and logistics, with a world-class airport. To continue its rise, Thailand needs to move into the higher-value segments of economic activity and create high-quality jobs that are regionally broader based. This report identifies the major constraints to accomplishing these goals and analyzes the main challenges. Among them, the country must: enhance research and development and international technology transfers; elevate worker skills and their industrial relevance; address structural impediments to competition, notably in services; provide advanced transport and logistics infrastructure; and improve access to finance and technology for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to show, through two case studies, that the transmision of growth impulses from the export sector to the rest of the economy might be weakened by a number of factors stemming from the initial resource endowment of the economy and the relative elasticities of supply of these resources. The consequences might be described as arrested or abortive growth. The case studies pertain to two countries in Southeast Asia, Thailand and former (French) Indo-China, covering the period of their entrance into world commerce in the second half of the nineteenth century to the Second World War.

Book excerpt: Why has public policy had only an indirect impact on Thailand¿s considerable developmentNULL This comprehensive report points to policy differences within the country¿s government. First it describes macroeconomic policies that advanced private enterprises, promoted universal education, and created productive state-owned companies. Then the report compares these policies with government interventions that--until recently--heavily favored capital-intensive industries over agriculture and labor-intensive manufacturing. Thailand¿s successful economic adjustment program is also examined. This program produced double-digit growth rates in the late 1980s by opening trade, expanding labor-intensive exports, and encouraging foreign direct investment.

This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses selected issues related to the economy of Thailand. The economy of Thailand is largely dependent on China. A 1 percent decline in China’s GDP lowers Thailand’s output by about 0.2 percent. Population aging is another major issue in Thailand. This Association of Southeast Asian Nations country will face the dual challenge of increasing the coverage of the social security system and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Thailand’s financial sector has expanded rapidly over the last decade, and important changes in its structure have taken place. While corporate debt has remained broadly stable, household debt has increased to one of the highest levels among emerging markets, raising concerns about household debt overhang.
