Book The Lord is My Shepherd and He Knows I m Gay

Download or read book The Lord is My Shepherd and He Knows I m Gay written by Troy D. Perry and published by Nash Publishing Corporation. This book was released on 1972 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am not a creature from the outer darkness! I am a homosexual, a man of flesh and blood. And, I have a few things to say..." This is the frank and revealing portrait of a man, the Reverend Troy Perry, pastor and founder of a church, lover of God--and a homosexual. It is a searching account of the plight of homosexuals in a world that scorned, condemned and harassed them while no one dared to cry out in protest--till now! On the heels of nationwide publicity accorded in 1968 to the world's first church to welcome homosexuals, the Metropolitan Community Church of Hollywood, California, Reverend Troy Perry presented this touchingly human autobiography of a young preacher who knew what it was to live life as an outcast. Born in Florida, the eldest of five sons, Perry discovered he was "different" in his early teens. The intensity with which he felt the presence of God in his life came to fruition when his aunt, pastor of a Pentecostal church, had a revelation that God had "laid his hands upon" Troy. From the age of 13 on, the young boy would preach of the Lord. But he was destined to travel a long, hard road of despair and torment. He was "different" in more ways than one. Troy's attempt at leading a straight life by marrying and having children ended in near disaster and an attempt at suicide. Not until he was able to accept who and what he was, and turned to a quest for self-respect and spiritual fulfillment, did he begin to find inner peace and contentment. This is, first and foremost, a biography of a courageous man. But, because of his very nature, it is also a semi-sociological study of life in a world saddled with archaic sex laws. Was homosexuality a legitimate way of life? Were the tales people had heard about "gay" men and women actualities or myths? Perry pulled no punches. His revelations were sometimes shocking. He made no attempt to milk the reader for sympathy. He merely "tells it like it is" in simple, unpretentious, and honest language. "l am a human being first, who believes that sexual orientation should be no more important as a standard for judging a person than knowing how one makes a living or combs his hair."--Adapted from jacket.

Download or read book Dear Abby I m Gay written by Andrew E. Stoner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role did America's newspaper advice columnists play in shaping and forming societal attitudes toward LGBTQ people throughout the 20th century? They served the dual function of offering advice and satisfying the curious. They also often provided the first mention of homosexuality outside of newspaper crime blotters. More than 100 million readers regularly read the columns. This book chronicles some of the most popular and widely circulated newspaper columns between the 1930s and 2000, including Ann Landers, Dear Abby, Helen Help Us!, Dr. Joyce Brothers, The Worry Clinic, Dear Meg, Ask Beth, and Savage Love. It examines the function of these columns regarding the place of LGBTQ people in America and what role they played in forming a public opinion. From these columns, we learn not only the framework of how straight Americans understood their homosexual brethren, but also how attitudes and feelings continued to evolve.

Download or read book A Church of Our Own written by R. Stephen Warner and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this definitive collection of essays spanning fifteen years, R. Stephen Warner traces the development of the "new paradigm" interpretation of American religion. Originally formulated in the 1990s in response to prevailing theories of secularization that focused on the waning plausibility of religion in modern societies, the new paradigm reoriented the study of religion to a focus on communities, subcultures, new religious institutions, and the fluidity of modern religious identities. This perspective continues to be one of the most important driving forces in the field and one of the most significant challenges to the idea that religious pluralism inevitably leads to religious decline. A leading sociologist of religion, Warner shows how the new paradigm stresses the role that religion plays as a vehicle for the bonding and expression of communities within the United States--a society founded on the principle of religious disestablishment and characterized by a diverse and mobile population. Chapters examine evangelicals and Pentecostals, gay and lesbian churches, immigrant religious institutions, Hispanic parishes, and churches for the deaf in terms of this framework. Newly written introductory and concluding essays set these groups within the broad context of the developing field. A thoughtfully organized and timely collection, the volume is a valuable classroom resource as well as essential reading for scholars of contemporary religion.

Book Faith in America

Download or read book Faith in America written by Charles H. Lippy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 25 years, there has been much talk of the presumed decline in religious participation in America. In addition, from the 1960s on, surveys that mark the influence of religion in American life have shown a mixed response. Many suggest that religion is losing influence in the culture as a whole; others indicate that while organized religion may be experiencing challenges, spirituality is on the upswing. At the same time, however, there have been signs that religious life in the U.S. is extraordinarily healthy. But religion in America has changed, to be sure, in a number of ways. And it has changed us and our culture in return. This timely set looks at the major forces that are changing the shape of religion in American life. With an influx of immigrants from Asia, Latin America, and other regions, the diversity of religion has grown to include Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and other faiths. Latin American and African American communities have experienced changes in the ways they practice their faith and in turn influence American culture in general. Women have entered the clergy in record numbers, and the push for allowing women and gays to enter the clergy in religions that limit or prohibit their roles is on the increase. In addition, gay couples are leading the same-sex marriage movement, and other social issues such as abortion, stem-cell research, end of life care, etc., are still being debated. Interest over how people actually live out their religion or spirituality has mushroomed in recent decades, thanks in part to the information revolution and popular culture. What folks do when they gather together to worship, and where they come together, has changed dramatically with the advent of the Internet and the role of sports in American life. So much has changed, and faith in America has become more important than ever—as part of our culture, our way of life, and the way we relate to each other and the world around us. The essays found in these pages shed light on our understanding of these transformations and help us comprehend the enormous role of religion in our society and in our world.

Book A Church Wide Enough for Everyone

Download or read book A Church Wide Enough for Everyone written by Steven H. Propp and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Schaeffer and Douglas West are best friends living in Oklahoma in 1963when they discover that they both sense a calling to become ministers in a mainline Christian denomination. But from seminary and their early years in ministry to their golden years looking back on what it takes to lead a congregation, a stimulating, sometimes puzzling, yet often inspirational world of theological controversies and congregational concerns would unfold for these two men of God. A Church Wide Enough for Everyone follows these two men on their journey to demonstrate the continuing relevance of the Christian faith in a postmodern world. After moving to Berkeley, California, to attend college and seminary, they have little time to ponder the vast social changes taking place before they immediately enter into intensive critical study of the Bible and Christian theology. And as Robert is then thrust into the ordained ministry with his wife, Faye, both men must in their own ways face the political, cultural, and ideological pressures of each passing decade, responding to challenges from both within the church and from outsiders. Are mainline churchesand Christian theologydead? Or might they be revitalized in the current century? A Church Wide Enough for Everyone and the inspired journeys of two ministers offers a window into how this revitalization and new understanding is possible.

Book Religion and American Cultures 4 volumes

Download or read book Religion and American Cultures 4 volumes written by Gary Laderman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 1863 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume work provides a detailed, multicultural survey of established as well as "new" American religions and investigates the fascinating interactions between religion and ethnicity, gender, politics, regionalism, ethics, and popular culture. This revised and expanded edition of Religion and American Cultures: Tradition, Diversity, and Popular Expression presents more than 140 essays that address contemporary spiritual practice and culture with a historical perspective. The entries cover virtually every religion in modern-day America as well as the role of religion in various aspects of U.S. culture. Readers will discover that Americans aren't largely Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish anymore, and that the number of popular religious identities is far greater than many would imagine. And although most Americans believe in a higher power, the fastest growing identity in the United States is the "nones"—those Americans who elect "none" when asked about their religious identity—thereby demonstrating how many individuals see their spirituality as something not easily defined or categorized. The first volume explores America's multicultural communities and their religious practices, covering the range of different religions among Anglo-Americans and Euro-Americans as well as spirituality among Latino, African American, Native American, and Asian American communities. The second volume focuses on cultural aspects of religions, addressing topics such as film, Generation X, public sacred spaces, sexuality, and new religious expressions. The new third volume expands the range of topics covered with in-depth essays on additional topics such as interfaith families, religion in prisons, belief in the paranormal, and religion after September 11, 2001. The fourth volume is devoted to complementary primary source documents.
