Book Textual Criticism and Middle English Texts

Download or read book Textual Criticism and Middle English Texts written by Tim William Machan and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Textual-Critical studies of medieval English literature have primarily focused on practical matters such as transcription, collation, recension, and the identification of scribal hands. But the theory of editing medieval English works remains largely unexplored. Tim William Machan addresses this void by setting out to articulate the textual and cultural factors that distinctively characterize Middle English works as Middle English and to reveal the role these factors play in editing and interpretation of these works. In revealing how the creation of textual criticism affected the transmission of Middle English, this book will be of interest and accessible to readers relatively new to both textual criticism and Middle English. It will also be of vital importance to specialists in medieval studies, Renaissance studies, and textual criticism.

Book Pursuing History

Download or read book Pursuing History written by Ralph Hanna and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume argues through a series of selected local studies, for the importance of "textual criticism" as a fundamental act of historical interpretation and recovery, pointing out the need for attention to the physical bearers of our knowledge of the English Middle Ages, the books themselves, and the ignored and alienating features of manuscript culture. The book begins with three essays that seek to problematize medieval book production, to show the procedure as more a fluid and emergent than a foreplanned process. The following two essays provide theoretical statements about the textual uses of manuscripts.

Book Medieval English Manuscripts and Literary Forms

Download or read book Medieval English Manuscripts and Literary Forms written by Jessica Brantley and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Medieval English Manuscripts and Literary Forms, Jessica Brantley offers an innovative introduction to manuscript culture that uses the artifacts themselves to open some of the most vital theoretical questions in medieval literary studies. With nearly 200 illustrations, many of them in color, the book offers both a broad survey of the physical forms and cultural histories of manuscripts and a dozen case studies of particularly significant literary witnesses, including the Beowulf manuscript, the St. Albans Psalter, the Ellesmere manuscript of the Canterbury Tales, and The Book of Margery Kempe. Practical discussions of parchment, scripts, decoration, illustration, and bindings mix with consideration of such conceptual categories as ownership, authorship, language, miscellaneity, geography, writing, editing, mediation, illustration, and performance—as well as of the status of the literary itself. Each case study includes an essay orienting the reader to particularly productive categories of analysis and a selected bibliography for further research. Because a high-quality digital surrogate exists for each of the selected manuscripts, fully and freely available online, readers can gain access to the artifacts in their entirety, enabling further individual exploration and facilitating the book’s classroom use. Medieval English Manuscripts and Literary Forms aims to inspire a broad group of readers with some of the excitement of literary manuscript studies in the twenty-first century. The interpretative frameworks surrounding each object will assist everyone in thinking through the implications of manuscript culture more generally, not only for the deeper study of the literature of the Middle Ages, but also for a better understanding of book cultures of any era, including our own.

Book Sources of the Boece

Download or read book Sources of the Boece written by Tim William Machan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boethius’s De Consolatione Philosophiae was among the most persistent and extensive influences on Chaucer’s writing. Its ideas appear in various works, including the Knight’s Tale and Troilus and Criseyde, while the so-called Boethian balades offer poetic renditions of small sections of the Consolation. Around 1380 Chaucer translated the whole of the Consolation into English, drawing not only on the Latin Vulgate Consolatio but also on Jean de Meun’s French translation (Li Livres de confort de philosophie) and on Nicholas Trevet’s Latin commentary on the Consolatio. Sources of the Boece will be particularly valuable for Chaucer studies, for it makes available for the first time copies of all Chaucer’s sources for his translation: newly edited, complete, facing-page texts of the Vulgate Consolatio and Meun’s translation, along with relevant extracts from the commentaries of Nicholas Trevet and Remigius of Auxerre and collations from the larger Latin and French traditions. The edition thus enables detailed, comparative studies of Chaucer’s use of his sources and provides additional material for assessing his understanding of Boethius’s ideas and how they figure in his other compositions. More generally, the very format of the edition will facilitate the study of translation in the Middle Ages, when writers worked not from standardized editions like the ones modern scholars consult but from variable and sometimes conflicting traditions. Chaucer’s procedures provide insights into medieval notions of textuality and vernacular authorship, issues that are perennial scholarly concerns.
