Book Bibliographies on Fabric Flammability

Download or read book Bibliographies on Fabric Flammability written by Sidney H. Greenfeld and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recognition of the urgency of the flammable fabrics problem, the Flammable Fabrics Act of 1953 was amended in 1967 to include all items of wearing apparel and interior furnishings. In order to facilitate research and assist in the development of new standards and test methods in these areas, a series of bibliographies is being prepared by the NBS Office of Flammable Fabrics. The first three bibliographies, on wearing apparel, fabrics used on beds, and carpets and rugs, are published in NBS Technical Note 498.498-1 is on interior furnishings. It includes all of the references on bed fabrics and carpets and rugs that appeared in TN 498, along with those on upholstered furniture, draperies, curtains, and materials that are used in interior furnishings. 498-2 relates to test methods and testing of fabrics and products made from fabrics and related materials. It cuts across product lines and covers all of the products within the ranges defined in the 1967 amendment to the Flammable Fabrics Act. Approximately 300 citations are included.

Book Textile Fabric Flammability

Download or read book Textile Fabric Flammability written by Stanley Backer and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1976-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A report on fabric and garment flammability which represents a synthesis and overview of research conducted by four independent labs, sponsored jointly by the Government Industry Research Committee on Flammable Fabrics and by the Office of Flammable Fabrics of the National Bureau of Standards. It is intended as a reference document for fiber and textile technologists concerned with this problem. The laboratories taking part in this cooperative program were the Factory Mutual Research Corporation; teh School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology; the Harris Research Laboratories Department, Gillette Research Institute; and the Fuels Research Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering, MIT. The overview group, which compiled and integrated the results and produced this book, was affiliated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, MIT. Three specific aspects of the flammability problem are treated here: fabric ignition, the spreading of flames, and burn injury to the human skin. In addition an entire chapter is devoted to the characterization of fabric properties related to flammability. The ignition phenomenon involves the complex processes of heat transfer, thermal degradation, fluid mechanics and chemical kinetics. Thermoplastic behavior compounds this complexity when synthetic fabrics are involved. The treatment of ignition outlined in this work, is essentially physical, omitting considerations of chemical kinetics and focusing on the prediction of ignition time of fabrics under known conditions of thermal exposure. Flame propagation is discussed as a continuing ignition process. Only those aspects of the flame propagation phenomenon, both in fabric strips and in garments, that are accessible through an experimental approach are dealt with. Research on thermal burns of the human body also involves considerations of heat transfer to and thermal decomposition of the skin. In this phase of the study, attempts are made to predict depth and burn damage on the basis of thermal history at the skin surface. Extensive experimental results are reported, which provide insight into the mode and extent of heat transfer from burning fabrics and garments to skin simulants.

Book The Dangerous Flammable Fabrics

Download or read book The Dangerous Flammable Fabrics written by Charles S. Beroes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically and persisting to this day, there has been a barbaric attitude toward gruesome and fatal injuries from flammable fabrics. Reliable burn injury data show hundreds of garment burn injury fatalities, annually and morbidly, painfully, and permanently injured victims form flammable fabrics. Industrial representatives argue that the total number of injuries is small and that the cost-benefits to the vast majority preponderantly favor the status quo. The children's sleepwear laws have dramatically reduced the frightful, destructive injuries to innocent children and safer fabrics are appearing in the stream of commerce. An effective warning label on dangerous garment fabrics would help build a market for safer clothing and enable the consumer to choose safer garments. More importantly, an effective warning label would reduce the number of dangerous flammable fabric victims. This text places an emphasis on the value of a warning label, which should be mandated on all new clothing to reduce the flammable fabric injuries and fatalities each year. It is especially important to alert mothers of flammable fabric risk to protect their children. Currently, the largest fatality groups are children 2-5 years of age and senior citizens over age 65. The author hopes to promote the use of an effective warning label to circumvent fabric burn injuries and to reduce disfiguring and fatal burn injuries.
