Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book on Geodesy and Least Squares: Prepared for the Use of Civil Engineering Students This book is an outgrowth of a course of lectures prepared for instruction at Cornell at a time when there was but little available in English on the subject of geodesy outside of the Coast Survey Reports. Field practice in geodetic, hydrographic, and topographic surveying was introduced as a part of the course, the work advancing from year to year continuously over the territory as in actual practice. This furnished data for reduction, computation, and mapping, so that the course has been thoroughly practical. The lecture notes have been revised from time to time and printed by one of the duplicating processes for the use of the students, as they have seemed to meet our needs better than the books which have been published on the subject. In preparing the notes for publication they have been elaborated to give them the character of a text-book, and they have been thoroughly revised in the effort to bring the work up to the best standard practice. Acknowledgment is due to many friends for data and suggestions, and especially to Mr. Ross M. Riegel, C. E., an instructor in the college, for intelligent and conscientious aid in carrying through the revision and proof-reading. The material for the work has been gradually collected from various sources, some of which have been referred to in the text. The principal are: Clarke's Geodesy, Jordan's Vermessungskunde, Chauvenet's Method of Least Squares, Wright and Hayford's Adjustment of Observations, and the Reports and data furnished from the office of the Coast Survey. For a bibliography of geodesy reference is made to Appendix No. 16 of the Coast Survey Report for 1887, prepared by Professor Gore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geodesy: Including Astronomical Observations, Gravity Measurements, and Method of Least Squares In this volume the author has attempted to produce a textbook on Geodesy adapted to a course of moderate length. The material has not been limited to what could be actually covered in the class, but much has been included for the purpose of giving the student a broader outlook and encouraging him to pursue the subject farther. Numerous references are given to the standard works. Throughout the book the aim has been to make the underlying principles clear, and to emphasize the theory as well as the details of field work. The methods of observing and computing have been brought up to date so as to be consistent with the present practice of the Coast and Geodetic Survey. The chapters on astronomy and least squares are included for the sake of completeness but do not pretend to be more than introductions to the standard works. The student cannot expect to master either of these subjects in a short course on geodesy, but must make a special study of each. The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to those who have assisted in the preparation of this book, and especially to Professor J.W. Howard of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for suggestions and criticism of the manuscript; to the Superintendent of the Coast and Geodetic Survey for valuable data and for the use of many photographs for illustrations; and to Messrs. C.L. Berger Sons for the use of photographs of the pendulum apparatus and several electrotype plates. Tables XII to XVII are from electrotype plates from Breed and Hosmer's Principles and Practice of Surveying, Vol. II. Book The Introduction to Geodetic Surveying in Three Parts

Download or read book The Introduction to Geodetic Surveying in Three Parts written by Mansfield Merriman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Introduction to Geodetic Surveying, in Three Parts: I. The Figure of the Earth; II. The Principles of Least Squares; III. The Field Work of Triangulation IN the first part of this book several lectures on the Figure of the Earth, prepared as an introduction to a course of study in Geodesy, are republished. In the second part is given a condensed presentation of the fundamental principles and rules of the Method of Least Squares, written especially for students, surveyors, and engineers who are unable to Spare the time required for the perusal of the larger books on the subject. The theoretical discussions have necessarily been omitted, but the fundamental ideas concerning adjustments, weights of observations, and probable error are fully explained, so that computations may be made intelli gently and not blindly. In the third part is presented a synopsis of the methods and computations required in the field work of precise triangulation, particularly in secondary geodetic work. Care has been taken to illus trate the rules and formulas by numerical examples, and to give problems exemplifying their applications. Thus the three parts of the book form an introduction, both theoretical and practical, to the science of Geodesy, and especially to Geodetic Surveying. Nothing new of any special importance is available in the general scheme of triangulation, and the chapter is written as briefly and logically as possible.
