Book Text Type and Texture

Download or read book Text Type and Texture written by Gail Forey and published by Equinox Publishing (UK). This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texture - the quality that makes a text 'hang together' as a text - is a key focus of investigation in discourse analysis. This volume provides a systematic overview of recent research on textual resources that are used to construct texture, and on the ways in which these resources are deployed differently in different text types. Theme is the major resource that is explored in the first part of the book. The opening papers set out the current understanding of Theme and explore aspects of the concept which remain controversial in the field. This is followed by an examination of thematic choices in a range of text types. Issues raised include the different kinds of meanings appearing in Theme which are particularly significant for each genre, the ways in which these relate to the broader socio-cultural context, and the ways in which thematic choices interact with other kinds of texturing. In the second part of the collection, the scope widens to include an examination of other resources, particularly the contribution to texture made by patterns of interpersonal choices, in Theme and more broadly across texts as a whole. The volume closes with an overview and illustration of a methodological approach by which our understanding of texturing can be further extended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse is language as it occurs, in any form or context, beyond the speech act. It may be written or spoken, monological or dialogical, but there is always a communicative aim or purpose. The present volume provides systematic orientation in the vast field of studying discourse from a pragmatic perspective. It first gives an overview of a range of approaches developed for the analysis of discourse, including, among others, conversation analysis, systemic-functional analysis, genre analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus-driven approaches and multimodal analysis. The focus is furthermore on functional units in discourse, such as discourse markers, moves, speech act sequences, discourse phases and silence. The final section of the volume examines discourse types and domains, providing a taxonomy of discourse types and focusing on a range of discourse domains, e.g. classroom discourse, medical discourse, legal discourse, electronic discourse. Each article surveys the current state of the art of the respective topic area while also presenting new research findings.

Book Text Linguistics and Translation

Download or read book Text Linguistics and Translation written by Ismat Al-Massri and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-03-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key purpose of this work is to examine the interrelationship between the field of text linguistics and translation with specific reference to computer translation. The question arises whether machine translation can ever be a practicable and reliable substitute for human translators. Based on this premise, this study assesses the effectiveness of machine translation software in its ability to translate the nuances of text linguistics from a source language to a target language. Following a literature review of text linguistics covering a number of textual analysis models and translation studies including machine translation, the primary research utilises a qualitative research methodology by means of text-based assessment. Three text samples are drawn from each of the following six text linguistic categories: register, pragmatics, semiotics, text type, genre and discourse. Using three leading Arabic translation software programmes the text samples are subjected to a comparative evaluation.

Book Patterns of Text

Download or read book Patterns of Text written by Michael Hoey and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly clear that, in order to understand language as a phenomenon, we must understand the phenomenon of text. Our primary experience of language comes in the form of texts, which embody the complete communicative events through which our language-using lives are lived. These events are shaped by communicative needs, and this shaping is reflected in certain characteristic patterns in the texts. However, the nature of texts and text is still elusive: we know which forms are typically found in text but we do not yet have a full grasp of how they constitute its textuality, how they make a text “tick”. The twelve contributions to this volume show how texts across a wide range of text types hold together by different patterns of chunking and linking. The common purpose in all the contributions is to explore the nature of text patterning as the functional environment within which language operates.

Download or read book The Texture of Internet written by Maria Lluïsa Gea-Valor and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet and Information and Communication Technologies represent the largest network of human online communication ever. Language is the material that enables communication to flow in this ever-growing digital world of emails, webs, blogs and SMS messages. And language, as always, transforms itself to meet the rapid demands of this virtual universe. As a result, a myriad of changes have occurred and are continuously occurring in the language of Internet users. The Texture of Internet explores the latest linguistic issues regarding these language transformations focusing on texting, email writing, website texture, new digital genres such as blogs, and the potential applications of Internet to specific linguistic professional settings (e.g. translation, linguistic research or language teaching). This book will become a key reference for anyone interested in unveiling the intricacies of language use in our technological environment. Santiago Posteguillo, María José Esteve, and Lluïsa Gea-Valor have compiled an excellent set of contributions from Spain, United Kingdom, and Hong Kong on the analysis of language use in Internet and Information and Communication Technologies. They all are researchers and teachers of Languages for Specific Purposes and Linguistics at Universitat Jaume I in Castelló, Spain. Their experience in Internet language analysis has produced a most valuable volume on the matter.

Book Narrative Worlds and the Texture of Time

Download or read book Narrative Worlds and the Texture of Time written by Rosemary Huisman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a model of time and a model of language to generate a new model of narrative, where different stories with different temporalities and non-chronological modes of sequence can tell of different worlds of human – and non-human – experience, woven together (the ‘texture of time’) in the one narrative. The work of Gerald Edelman on consciousness, J.T. Fraser on time, and M.A.K. Halliday on language is introduced; the categories of systemic functional linguistics are used for detailed analysis of English narrative texts from different literary periods. A summary chapter gives an overview of previous narrative studies and theories, with extensive references. Chapters on ‘temporalization’ and ‘spatialization’ of language contrast the importance of time in narrative texts with the effect of ‘grammatical metaphor’, as described by M.A.K. Halliday, for scientific discourse. Chapters on prose fiction, poetry and the texts of digital culture chart changes in the ‘texture of time’ with changes in the social context: ‘narrative as social semiotic’.
