Book Text Book of Geology For Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of Geology For Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint written by Henry Alleyne Nicholson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Geology: For Schools and Colleges Tm: object of the present work is to present to the learner the leading principles and facts of geological science in as brief a compass as is compatible with clearness and accuracy. N 0 science stands less alone, or is less independent of the other sciences, than Geology. Its foundation, as a science, is upon Physical Geography, and this subject has, therefore, been treated in the earlier portion of this work as fully as space would allow. N o adequate knowledge, again, of the facts and generalizations of Palaeontology can be acquired without some previous acquaintance with Zoology and Botany, the former more especially. A brief outline of the classification of the animal kingdom has, therefore, been here introduced; but the progress of the learner would be much facilitated by a more extensive study of Natural History than can possibly be presented in a work primarily devoted to Geology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Geology, Vol. 1: For Use in Universities Colleges, Schools of Science, Etc;, And for the General Reader Geology is essentially an historical science in that it continually seeks to determine the origin of things and the changes which they have experienced. The documents upon which the history is based are written in the rocks of the earth itself and the forms Of its surface features; they present a series Of incontrovertible records, and, if we would read this history, it is our part to learn to decipher the records correctly. Much of this has been done, but much also remains to be done; it is the aim of this work to present a general account of what has been accomplished. Many writers define Geology as a history Of the earth and its inhabitants, as Shown by the record in the rocks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology With this keynote in mind, the attempt is made throughout the book to keep to matters that have a direct bearing on geologic history. The authors consider it a mistake to use the limited space in an ele mentary text for the exposition of scientific matters not directly a part of geology, however interesting they may be in themselves. For this reason the discussion of weather, of which at best only a smattering can be given in a geologic text, has been abandoned. Similarly a detailed discussion of the mechanics of glacier motion, which has inherent inter est but is not essential to an understanding of land sculpture by glaciers, is dispensed with. Thus some rocks are sandstones or limestones, others are slates or schists, and others are ancient or modern lavas. These occur in beds or masses of many kinds, and have often been folded, broken, or otherwise changed. As a result of composition, structure, and dynamic changes we have land forms, the study of which is included in Part II. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology: For Use in Mining Schools, Colleges, and Secondary Schools This volume comprises a systematic course of lectures carefully revised and expanded so as to cover the requirements in Geology as now defined for Engineering, Mining, and Agricultural Schools and Colleges. The first principles of Geology are, so to speak, the ABC of the science. They are mostly based on the simple processes that are now going on around us and when we know Man we are able to read the story of the earth wherever we may chance to find our selves. But the student who confines his observations and studies to his own immediate neighbourhood is in danger of acquiring a false sense of proportion, and may in time unconsciously come to believe that the things and processes he sees in his own terrain are typical of the whole globe. When he afterwards comes to travel further afield he may find himself compelled to modify his standards and renounce many of his early conceptions. The corrective of local prejudices and a narrow horizon is extensive reading and still more extensive travel. A word to the student. Make an early acquaintance with the facts of geology as presented in the field. Miss no chance of travel or exploration with the experienced geologist. Cultivate the faculty of exact observation, and be mindful not to form hasty conclusions. Remember that things are not always what they seem. Make extensive collections of rocks and fossils, and be careful to keep the fossils of each horizon apart. Take every care to preserve your fossils from injury. The dictum of the Hon. Walter Mantell that a fossil that is worth collecting is worth its paper is as true now as when made to the Author forty years ago, and applies equally well to rock specimens. Do not attempt to describe new species leave that to the specialist. Even when you have gained some note as a writer on geology, refrain from coining new terms.
