It is believed that, if this subject is to con tribute to the professional equipment of the teacher, its material must be selected with reference to his specific needs. Antiquarian interests and encyclopaedic complete ness are alluring and may in their place prove praise Worthy and valuable, but they do not in themselves supply any definite demand in the training of teachers. The greatest services that the History of Education can perform for the teacher are to impel him to analyze his problems more completely and to throw light upon the school practices with which he is himself concerned. By presenting a series of clear-cut views of past conditions, often in marked contrast to his own, it should make him conscious that the present educational situation has to a large degree been traditionally received, and it should at the same time especially help him to understand the origin and significance of current practices. In this way a study of the History of Education will disrupt the teacher's complacent acceptance of the pres ent, and will enable him to reconstruct his ideas in the light of the peculiar conditions out of which the educa tion of his times has sprung. The merits which the author has sought to incorporate are (1) to furnish a body of historical facts sufficient to give the student concrete material from which to form generalizations; (2) to suggest, chiefly by classification of this material, interpretations such as will not consist merely in unsupported generalizations; (3) to give, to some degree, a flavor of the original sources of information; (4) to make evident the relation between educational development and other aspects of the history of civilization; (5) to deal with educational tendencies rather than with men; (6) to show the connection between educational theory and actual school work in its historical development; (7) to suggest relations with present educational work. Containing as it does three or four times the material incorporated in the text-books now in use in American schools, the extent of the work is justified in the opinion of the author by the greater interest to be aroused in the student by concrete material bearing upon school life and connecting it with more or less familiar historical situations, and by the broader basis which it will furnish the instructor for his work. In some town and city schools it is pursued by a few pupils in the high schools for One year; but this is usually in connection with the so-called general history course. There are no special teachers of American institutions in Amer ican schools below the university, and few universities have such teachers. In the preparatory schools the prevailing method of instruction is as follows The teacher assigns a fixed number of pages in the text-book to be memorized pupils repeat text-book in recitation; they are examined in text-book and the subject is dropped, and usually willingly. This method (sic) prevails in large cities and in crowded schools, and is the sine qua non of every teacher who is compelled to hear lessons which he does not understand. It does not permit the use of different texts, because the teacher is required to get his pupils past a dreaded examination: for if a certain minimum is not passed, the school board employs a new teacher l) to hear the les sons. The result is that thousands pass from these schools with a brief mental encumbrance of names, dates, and events, - mere baggage. In later life it proves its worthlessness and is cast away, and the man knows that the public school did him more harm than good, so far as it tried to teach him American history. But while it was designed in the first place to lay a foundation for the development of Methods of Teaching for those who are preparing themselves for the work of the schoolroom, the principles and laws developed are no less applicable to public speaking, family training, and every other influence by which thought, feeling, or voluntary action is developed or molded. The main lines of thought, and the form of the work as a Science of Education are new. This has not been sought for the sake of novelty, nor to make it appear that there is need of the work; but, because it has been so universally felt that there was need of a work radically different from any thing that existed, this method of treating the subject was adopted, although it was new. But, because the field was new, it is not expected that it is free from errors that will expose it to just criticism, and because the end in view is truth, criticism is not deprecated. If it shall lead some one to correct its errors, and carry its truths to more important conclusions, it will have accomplished its greatest good.
