Book Hardware software Compatibility for Traffic Management IVHS Systems

Download or read book Hardware software Compatibility for Traffic Management IVHS Systems written by James D. Carvell and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional contracting and procurement when applied to electronic data communication, computing, and software are not entirely appropriate for Advanced Traffic Management Systems, particularly if low-bid is the prime consideration for award. Purchasing and procurement legislation for the State of Texas and other states was reviewed to determine applicability in procuring Advanced Traffic Management/Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems. In particular, researchers considered compatibility issues in expanding existing systems. The current Texas Information Resources Act (SB381), enacted in mid-1994, appears to offer the most flexible mechanism for implementing and expanding these complex systems. Through the catalog purchase procedure, TxDOT has the opportunity to more nearly specify the most appropriate traffic management system for a given set of circumstances and to provide for expansion and extension of systems with minimal compatibility problems. National efforts to develop a standard architecture and communications protocol will further enhance the ability to procure compatible system components. TxDOT should continue to monitor and participate in those national development activities. Given the implementation of the Texas Information Resources Act and the anticipation of a national standard architecture and communications protocol, the following recommendations are offered in relation to procurement and expansion of Advanced Traffic Management/Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems: Utilize catalog or competitive proposal procedures to procure and expand systems; Use new NEMA protocol for future traffic controller procurement; Develop, in conjunction with other freeway management states, message structures supported by NTCIP which accommodate IVHS functionality with devices such as CMS, CCTV, detectors, LCS, HAR, etc.; and Specify, to the extent possible, standard, off-the-shelf hardware for communications and control.

Book Electronic Toll and Traffic Management ETTM Systems

Download or read book Electronic Toll and Traffic Management ETTM Systems written by Michael C. Pietrzyk and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis on Electronic Toll and Traffic Management (ETTM) systems will be of interest to officials of toll authorities, traffic engineers, design engineers, law enforcement officials, financial personnel, developers and vendors of electronic vehicle identification and toll collection equipment, and others responsible for the design and operation of toll facilities. The technology, including examples of applications of several current ETTM systems, is described in this synthesis. Because the technology is in the early stages of implementation, there is little experience with the TM (traffic management) aspects of ETTM; however, the potential for traffic management systems is discussed. Various electronic toll collection (ETC) and automatic vehicle identification (AVI) systems, their characteristics, advantages/disadvantages, payment options, and performance experience are described. The computer requirements and relative costs of various applications are also discussed. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents information on specific system design and operational considerations, as well as on the more sensitive issues of enforcement, privacy, and equity in providing these advanced systems. This technology is changing rapidly, and the synthesis presents a snapshot of the industry at the time of its preparation.

Book Freeway Corridor Management

Download or read book Freeway Corridor Management written by Conrad L. Dudek and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state and local traffic engineers, transportation planners, transit operators, law enforcement officials, public information agencies, and others responsible for the transportation elements of freeway corridors. Information is provided on the policies and procedures for freeway corridor management, and descriptions of a number of techniques and practices are presented. Traffic growth and increasing congestion on urban freeways require a comprehensive approach toward managing the complex elements of freeway operations. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on freeway corridor management strategies, the components of management, examples of effective applications of the strategies, and benefits of freeway corridor management. The management techniques that are discussed include freeway surveillance and control; corridor street surveillance and control; high-occupancy vehicle facilities and incentives; police enforcement and traffic control; hazardous material and other truck traffic restrictions; alternative route planning; motorist assistance patrols; motorist information techniques; and traffic management for recurrent congestion, for incidents, for special events, and for work zones.

Book Transportation Infostructures

Download or read book Transportation Infostructures written by John Diebold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-05-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the first to result from the Diebold Institute Information-Based Infrastructure Project, explores the links between business and government in the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology. The work focuses on road and vehicular infrastructures, comparing those of the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and the roles that ITS can play in solving major current and anticipated future transportational problems. Special attention is given to environmental and economic concerns. The world's infrastructure requires refurbishing, but it especially requires rethinking. The computer has transformed business enterprises and now information technology can change our environment. This book explores the benefits and how to achieve them through the use of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The implementation of ITS will potentially lead to individual drivers, fleet operators, and public transit users saving vast amounts of journey time and fuel, to a significant reduction in pollution and to improved road safety. The Japanese are ahead of the U.S. and Europe in the area of intelligent transportation systems, using position location devices, and electronic maps. Most look at this development as one that helps speed passenger cars, but this book details the economics which point to the technology being equally good for speeding trucks and easing the movement of freight. Traffic avoidance is only part of the problem although route guidance is helpful. Financing of projects in ITS is an important area for innovation and ITS could be a source of revenue to municipalities rather than an expense.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provided is an overview of the Nation's transportation system which identifies future investments required to maintain and develop its infrastructure. The contents of this study were used in support of the National Transportation Policy Statement, issued by the Department of Transportation during March 1990. It is organized around a framework in which transportation is viewed as an integral part of our socioeconomic system. The future development of transportation will be influenced by the same factors affecting the rest of the system, namely, demographic changes, the future course of the economy, the energy supply, and preservation of the environment.
