Book excerpt: As a young man, Arturo Rodriguez was always the guardian of the underdog. This theme carried through to his adult life when he became the first Mexican-American Texas Ranger, an intense and dramatic event in South Texas history. In Rodriguez... Texas Ranger! author Rick Harper recounts Rodriguez's life and law enforcement career. As Harper tells Rodriguez's story, he also chronicles many of Texas and Mexico's significant historical events and their corresponding sociocultural, economic, and racial developmental patterns to demonstrate not only their immediate impact, but also the ways in which these events and patterns framed the region's present state. Providing insight into the dynamic nature of Texas during the 1960s and '70s, Rodriguez... Texas Ranger! tells a tale of Gringos and Chicanos, justice and vengeance, the law and the lawless, pistoleros and politics, sharpshooters and shopkeepers, ranchers and farmers, cowboys and cattle drives, governors and goat headers, and Texas Rangers. It's about the passing of a frontier system and the emergence of modern times.

Book Texas Ranger Leo Bishop

Download or read book Texas Ranger Leo Bishop written by Betty Oglesbee and published by NorTex Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Henderson Bishop (1903-1973) was among the first of the “new” Texas Rangers appointed by James V. Allred upon his inauguration as Governor of Texas in 1935. Two boxes of Bishop family memorabilia at the estate sale of Bishop Family Historian Bettye Bishop Robbins in 2016 provided the basis for this personal glimpse into her father’s life, along with supportive articles from the San Augustine Tribune. Of special interest in Bettye’s collection were the transcribed Dictabelt tapes from an interview by Dr. Ben Proctor in 1968 at the Carta Valley, Texas ranch home of retired Texas Ranger Leo Bishop. Primary-source stories from those who lived them are always significant, especially when spoken in the unvarnished vernacular of the person doing the telling. Published in 1991 by Eakin Press, Dr. Proctor’s Just One Riot, Episodes of Texas Rangers in the 20th Century, included a Leo Bishop chapter. Ranger Bishop’s life story embodies all the traits that make him an icon within the annals of law enforcement: perseverance, honesty, seeking the truth, attention to detail, and a watchful eye.

Book The Case of the Texas Rangeer

Book excerpt: A Texas Ranger—a virtual relic from the past–walks into a bar… but it isn't funny when he gets shot down on the street the moment he walks out… Just like the doctors warned, Dad has made lots of promises about staying off the bottle. That doesn't stop me from being disappointed to find him at a local speakeasy one night when he's supposed to be working a case. The leathery, stout man at his table is unmistakable: Templeton Gorham, former Texas Ranger. The governor temporarily shut down the Rangers years ago, but before that, Templeton was virtually a legend in his profession. He and JD are laughing over drinks like old friends, but later, when the three of us walk out into the night, gunshots pierce the darkness. Templeton is left lying in a pool of blood, and I'm left with a brand-new case on my hands. When the victim won't speak, can I find the answers to keep a killer from finishing the job he started?

Download or read book Death of a Texas Ranger written by Cynthia Leal Massey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death of a Texas Ranger is the thrilling, action-packed story of the murder of Texas Ranger John Green by Cesario Menchaca, one of three Rangers of Mexican descent under Green’s command. Immediately word spread that the killing may have been the botched outcome of a contract taken out on Menchaca’s life by the notorious Gabriel Marnoch, a local naturalist who had run up against the law himself. But was it? Much more than just a story about a tragic frontier killing, it is the story of an era. The events leading up to the murder and Green’s son’s decades’ long quest for justice for his father’s killer exemplify the chaotic frontier society in Texas after the Civil War, a time fraught with political turmoil and cultural clashes. Amidst that chaos, the virgin landscape of Texas was a magnet to those interested in the natural sciences in the nineteenth century, an era often referred to as the Age of Darwin. The clash between the seemingly pastoral landscape with its offerings for science and the brutal history of the region ties this very readable regional history into the larger American story.

Book Tracking the Texas Rangers

  • Author : Bruce A Glasrud
  • Publisher : University of North Texas Press
  • Release : 2013-09-15
  • ISBN : 1574415263
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Tracking the Texas Rangers written by Bruce A Glasrud and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracking the Texas Rangers: The Twentieth Century is an anthology of fifteen previously published articles and chapter excerpts covering key topics of the Texas Rangers during the twentieth century. The task of determining the role of the Rangers as the state evolved and what they actually accomplished for the benefit of the state is a difficult challenge. The actions of the Rangers fit no easy description. There is a dark side to the story of the Rangers; during the Mexican Revolution, for example, some murdered with impunity. Others sought to restore order in the border communities as well as in the remainder of Texas. It is not lack of interest that complicates the unveiling of the mythical force. With the possible exception of the Alamo, probably more has been written about the Texas Rangers than any other aspect of Texas history. Tracking the Texas Rangers covers leaders such as Captains Bill McDonald, “Lone Wolf” Gonzaullas, and Barry Caver, accomplished Rangers like Joaquin Jackson and Arthur Hill, and the use of Rangers in the Mexican Revolution. Chapters discuss their role in the oil fields, in riots, and in capturing outlaws. Most important, the Rangers of the twentieth century experienced changes in investigative techniques, strategy, and intelligence gathering. Tracking looks at the use of Rangers in labor disputes, in race issues, and in the Tejano civil rights movement. The selections cover critical aspects of those experiences—organization, leadership, cultural implications, rural and urban life, and violence. In their introduction, editors Bruce A. Glasrud and Harold J. Weiss, Jr., discuss various themes and controversies surrounding the twentieth-century Rangers and their treatment by historians over the years. They also have added annotations to the essays to explain where new research has shed additional light on an event to update or correct the original article text.
