Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Western Fiction Adventure. This is Texas Ranger Bill Vents here. The year is 1888, and most of the West already has been won. Hidden here and there are remnants of the times past when life was a struggle on the frontier, and evil men preyed on others. The place is Mayweather in northern California, and an unusual bunch of men has assembled at the request of the town mayor. Mayor Rowdy Bates has called together four of his best friends to remember our lives as marshals, Texas Rangers, and even bounty hunters. Thus, begins seven days of campfire tales like nobody has ever heard. I take charge as the master storyteller, but the rivalry is passionate, and all five of us have our own stories to tell. And who is better to record all that is said for the archives of history than Harold Stampede, the famous dime novelist from the Boston Herald. You're welcome to join us by the campfire, but be prepared to have your hair stand on end as we reminisce about the rootin' tootin' Wild West as we saw and lived it. I must warn y'all, though. Our tales and lies ain't for the faint-hearted nor the squeamish. This is the West as raw as it gets.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Bill McDonald, Texas Ranger: A Story of Frontier Reform In repose, Captain Bill is mild of manner; his speech is a gentle vernacular, his eyes are like the summer sky. I have never seen him in action, but I am told that then his voice becomes sharp and imperative, that his eyes turn into points of gray which pierce the Offender through. Book Captain Bill McDonald Texas Ranger

Download or read book Captain Bill McDonald Texas Ranger written by Albert Bigelow Paine and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superb biography of a famous Texas Ranger on the Western frontier William Jesse 'Bill' McDonald was born in Kemper County, Mississippi in 1852, but it was in the state of Texas where he earned his reputation as one of the most notable captains of the famous Texas Rangers. Such was his fame that Albert Paine, best known for his work on Mark Twain, was persuaded to become his biographer and that decision has resulted in a finely crafted account of McDonald's life in which his western character and amiability authentically shines through the various anecdotes of his life as a lawman on the South-Western frontier. Having moved to Wood County, Texas as a young man, McDonald became a grocer, but developed an interest in the law and soon became a Deputy Sheriff, Ranger and U.S. Deputy Marshall. Before long he was capturing cattle rustlers and train-robbers in the 'No-Man's-Land' and the Cherokee Strip. In 1891 McDonald became captain of Texas Rangers Company B, Frontier Battalion and set about bringing bank robbers, murderers and outlaw Mexican-Americans to justice with extraordinary success. Such was McDonald's renown that he eventually became a bodyguard for Theodore Roosevelt (who contributed an introduction to this biography), Woodrow Wilson and William Howard Taft. This is an essential book for anyone interested in the Texas Rangers and is highly recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
