Book The New Living Pulpit of the Christian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Living Pulpit of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by William Thomas Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Living Pulpit of the Christian Church The publishers have peculiar satisfaction in sending forth "The New Living Pulpit" for many reasons. A new book of value is always an event which the thoughtful part of the community welcomes. In the preface of "The Living Pulpit," issued fifty years ago, the publishers said: "It is, and has been, our intention to follow the present volume, in due course, with a second, and, possibly, a third, until the series shall be so complete as fairly and fully to represent the Living Pulpit of the Christian Church, and shall embody a mass of sermons wherein all the vital or important points bearing upon the faith, conduct, and salvation of man will be ably and eloquently discussed." This is perhaps the beginning of the belated fulfillment of that tentative promise. Every sermon carries the atmosphere of the romance of rescued souls, comforted hearts, beautified lives and enriched civilization. The problems in issuing a volume of this character are numerous, but not the least one is that of elimination. The plan of the book was not to select the greatest preachers - no one could decide such a question, - but rather to assemble the sermons of well-known representative men of different types. It is certain that there are many other preachers amongst the Disciples of Christ who could present sermons equal in thought, style and tone to those in this volume. To them the book will be as interesting and will be as gladly received as though the fruit of their own labor. And such indeed it is in a very real sense, for every sermon is of the soul of the whole group to which its immediate author belongs. The Brotherhood will not be slow to appreciate the unique services of the editor of these sermons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons From a Greylock Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons From a Greylock Pulpit Classic Reprint written by Alford Brown Penniman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons From a Greylock Pulpit Most of these sermons were delivered between january and June of eighteen hundred and ninety-seven. They first appeared in a weekly publication called A Greylock Pulpit. It seems fitting to give a few reasons which led to their publication. Surrounded with machinery for what is known as Institutional church work, I desired to make emphatic the inspiration which belongs to the living Word. Having already in use a sufficiently elaborate order of worship, multiplied organizations, a parish house with gymnasium and amusement rooms, a young men's literary society, all splendid channels for energy; the pulpit as a herald may speak to the indifferent life of the community and induce interest by means of the impersonal page. In the half-hour or more given to the sermon, there is much condensation, which is not in vain. If opportunity for review be given the people from week to week. I saw a further reason in the good chance to revive old friendships. One who has changed his residence, the old homestead for the college, the college for the world, one church, town or country for another, what ever his gain, must keenly feel the loss of separation. Perhaps my ser mons may prove a long, rough pole, by which I shall still save drowning friendships. Please note that the series was not christened The, but A Grey lock Pulpit. The title was given me by Greylock Mountain itself. The base begins beneath my study and the mountain rises to a height of four thousand feet of beauty and strength. On a clear day at least four states, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and perhaps Connecticut can be seen from this summit. Greylock is Berkshire's Mount Zion. If mountaineers are always freemen, mountain preach ers ought to be free preachers. This Taconic mountain has been the object of much contention among geologists. However, their polemic was of the last decade. Theological strife is happily passing, and the church of today has earnestly begun to study sociology. Greylock has lately been made a type by geologists. The churches of our valley are slowly conforming to a higher ideal. Again Greylock is a deposit, not the result of volcanic action like the lower and opposite Hoosac range. The Greylock message therefore is that our social changes ought to be educational and gradual rather than fierce and revolutionary. Book Christians Are Hate Filled Hypocrites and Other Lies You ve Been Told

This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the media, the church is rapidly shrinking, both in numbers and in effectiveness. But the good news is, much of the bad news is wrong. Sociologist Bradley R. E. Wright uncovers what's really happening in the church: evangelicals are more respected by secular culture now than they were ten years ago; divorce rates of Christians are lower than those who aren't affiliated with a religion; young evangelicals are active in the faith. Wright reveals to readers why and how statistics are distorted, and shows that God is still effectively working through his people today.

Book Christ s Trumpet Call to the Ministry

Download or read book Christ s Trumpet Call to the Ministry written by Daniel S. Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Trumpet-Call to the Ministry: Or the Preacher and the Preaching for the Present Crisis The following pages embody the thoughts and reasoned convictions of the writer on a subject that has been prominently before his mind during much of the last thirty years of a somewhat active life. They lie along the line of a belief which he shares in common with many other Christians, that the Church of Christ has come to the great crisis in her history and work - a crisis big either with unspeakable disaster and misery for all the future, or with decisive victory and the conquest of the world for Christ. They are presented with the profound - almost overwhelming - conviction that the questions discussed are, for the ministry and the Church, life-and-death questions that every preacher of the Gospel should, for the glory of the Master and for the sake of a lost world, take up, consider carefully, and settle in the light of the Word of God, without an hour's delay. They have been expressed in the popular and practical form that permits the repetition and even reiteration of important facts and principles that require emphasis by presentation in various aspects and relations. They are addressed especially to preachers of the Gospel, for the reason that upon the preacher as leader in the work of the Church, more than upon all else, will depend the final result. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Methodist Pulpit, 1852, Vol. 5 Here, as already intimated, we have the first record - 445 years before Christ - of the establishment of the Pulpit as a means of religious instruction. From that time, down to the present, it has been a prominent instrumentality in the church, of God first in the synagogue of the Jews, to expound and enforce the Mosaic law; and secondly, under the Christian dispensation, to proclaim the brighter glories of the Gospel. As a great and effectual moral agency, it stands without a rival. The religious Press, by the extent and permanency of its influence, alone invites a comparison. But this is modern in its origin, and though great andindispensable in the service which it renders to the cause of God, it is less forceful and im pressive in its addresses to the understanding and conscience, and chiefly valuable as an auxflz'ary to the more direct and stirring appeals of the Pulpit.
