Book excerpt: With this second of the series, TEXAS DOC continues the popular anecdotal stories begun in DALLAS DOC, the true-life portrayal behind the zany adventures and poignant moments that make up a twenty-year veterinary practice in treating critters of every shape and size - from gerbils, cats and canines ... to horses, cows and cougars. Doc recaptures the daily escapades with his jovial partner, Dr. Rich Vest, and indomitable assistants, Tracy and Rachel, who are with him every step of the way as he meets more eccentric owners and their endearing animals pals: There's Columbo, a kitten caught in the middle of a fire and a crime; the tattooed lady with a pet ferret; a mystery on the range threatening thirty thousand sheep; and a farmer's corporate fight to keep his pets in a pig-waller at the shopping mall.

Book When Texas Prison Scams Religion

Download or read book When Texas Prison Scams Religion written by Michael G. Maness and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Texas Prison Scams Religion exposes corruption in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, especially in the abuse of religion. In many ways, this book is a literature review of 1,800-plus works that defends freedom of conscience in prison while exposing the unconstitutionality of the seminary program that “buys faith with favor” from prisoners. The state veritably ordains the prisoner a “Field Minister” that represents the offices of the Governor, TDCJ Director, and wardens throughout the prison. Therein, TDCJ lies about neutrality in a program all about Christian missions and lies again in falsely certifying elementary Bible students as counselors. Why is the director sponsoring psychopaths counseling psychopaths? In fact, TDCJ pays $314 million a year to UTMB for psychiatric care and receives not a single report of the care given, and worse, for UTMB generates no reports itself. The underbelly TDCJ’s executive culture of cover up is exposed. TDCJ has hired the lowest qualified of the applicant pool many times in the last 25 years and regularly destroys statistics on violence. TDCJ Dir. Collier led the prison to model Louisiana Warden Burl Cain, the most scandal-ridden in penal history according to a host of published news stories for 20 years. Therein, Collier led TDCJ to favor the smallest segment of religious society within Evangelical Dominionism. Texas has no business endorsing the truth of any religion over another. We close with a proposal that utilizes the 400,000,000 hours of officer contact over ten years as a definitive influence in contrast to a commissioner that spends less than 10 minutes on each decision. Maness has been lobbying Austin for 15 years to definitively access staff for his “100,000 Mothers’ 1% Certainty Parole Texas Constitutional Amendment,” which would revolutionize prison culture and save Texans millions of the dollars.

Book Doc Holliday

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karen Holliday Tanner
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2013-03-12
  • ISBN : 0806172169
  • Pages : 371 pages

Download or read book Doc Holliday written by Karen Holliday Tanner and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John H. Holliday, D. D. S., better known as Doc Holliday, has become a legendary figure in the history of the American West. In Doc Holliday: A Family Portrait, Karen Holliday Tanner reveals the real man behind the legend. Shedding light on Holliday’s early years, in a prominent Georgia family during the Civil War and Reconstruction, she examines the elements that shaped his destiny: his birth defect, the death of his mother and estrangement from his father, and the diagnosis of tuberculosis, which led to his journey west. The influence of Holliday’s genteel upbringing never disappeared, but it was increasingly overshadowed by his emerging western personality. Holliday himself nurtured his image as a frontier gambler and gunman. Using previously undisclosed family documents and reminiscences as well as other primary sources, Tanner documents the true story of Doc’s friendship with the Earp brothers and his run-ins with the law, including the climactic shootout at the O. K. Corral and its aftermath. This first authoritative biography of Doc Holliday should appeal both to historians of the West and to general readers who are interested in his poignant story. "Doc Holliday: A Family Portrait will be considered the definitive Holliday biography and will supplant all previously published works on the man’s life as a complete and authoritative account. This book will undoubtedly take a place among the foremost books in the Western gunfighter genre." - Robert K. DeArment, author of Alias Frank Canton

Book Doc Holliday in Film and Literature

Download or read book Doc Holliday in Film and Literature written by Shirley Ayn Linder and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend of Doc Holliday is now well past a century old. While his time on earth was brief, troubled and filled with pain, his legend took wings and flew. Beginning with his part in the now famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Denver newspapers first told his story in the late 19th century. They, followed by words of Wyatt Earp, grasped the glimmer of his tale. So enamored was the public that by 1939 he was a literary icon and his character had appeared in eight films. Historians, authors, screenwriters and eventually television refined the legend, which reached its apex perhaps with the 1993 film Tombstone. Doc Holliday's image has neither dimmed nor wavered in the 21st century. Broadway, country music and art join with literature and film to continue his mystique as the personification of a surviving legend of the U.S. West.
