Book excerpt: "Cuentos Tejanos" is a recounting of stories, legends, and people who helped forge the personality and character of the State of Texas, in particular in the Wild Horse Desert region South of the Nueces River and north of the Rio Grande. Many of these tales are historical in nature and others are legends, accounts that were told by a campfire or converted to "Corridos" - ballads - by the Tejano. Some are academically inclined with sources and citations, but most are just stories told from generation to generation that have survived the test of time and must not be forgotten. You will also learn about many of the personalities that helped settled the area. You will read about conquistadores, generals, and feats of bravery. You will read folk stories - some that will tickle your feelings and send shivers down your spine. You will be amazed at the depth of history this area has and wonder why it's not in the history books for our children to learn and retell. This is "Cuentos Tejanos." It is about tales of the Wild Horse Desert of Texas where wild Spanish mustangs roamed from the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico to the Brush Country of South Texas and the plains for the Rio Grande Valley delta. Most of the stories are by Dr. Manuel C. Flores, Jr., professor of journalism and communications at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He is a well-regarded Tejano historian and has made countless lectures and talks on the subject. He also has written two books, has chapters in two other books and his academic work has appeared in journals like the Journal of South Texas. Other stories are written by journalists and historians who felt their stories must also be told. "Cuentos Tejanos" translates to "Tejano Tales," and thus the subtitle "Tales of Life in the Wild Horse Desert."

Book Spanish Missions of Texas

Download or read book Spanish Missions of Texas written by Byron Browne and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "After the conquest of Mexico by Hernan Cortaes in the sixteenth century, conquistadors and explorers poured into the territory of Nueva Espaana. The Franciscans followed in their wake but carved a different path through a harsh and often violent landscape. That heritage can still be found across Texas, behind weathered stone ruins and in the pews of ornate, immaculately maintained naves. From early structures in El Paso to later woodland sanctuaries in East Texas, these missions anchored communities and, in many cases, still serve them today. Author Byron Browne reconnoiters these iconic landmarks and their lasting legacy."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There's a lot of text in the book, but it's smartly framed within two-page spreads, and very little of it feels extraneous. ...A worthy picture-book primer on the Queen of Tejano music."-Kirkus Reviews This is a moving and impassioned picture book about the iconic Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla, that will embolden young readers to find their passion and make the impossible, possible! Selena Quintanilla's music career began at the age of nine when she started singing in her family's band. She went from using a hairbrush as a microphone to traveling from town to town to play gigs. But Selena faced a challenge: People said that she would never make it in Tejano music, which was dominated by male performers. Selena was determined to prove them wrong. Born and raised in Texas, Selena didn't know how to speak Spanish, but with the help of her dad, she learned to sing it. With songs written and composed by her older brother and the fun dance steps Selena created, her band, Selena Y Los Dinos, rose to stardom! A true trailblazer, her success in Tejano music and her crossover into mainstream American music opened the door for other Latinx entertainers, and she became an inspiration for Latina girls everywhere.

Book Jack Jackson s American History

Download or read book Jack Jackson s American History written by Jack Jackson and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Los Tejanos is the story of the Texas-Mexican conflict between 1835 and 1875 as seen through the eyes of tejano (literally Texan of Mexican, as distinct from anglo, heritage) Juan Seguín. It is through Seguín, a pivotal and tragic figure, that Jackson humanizes Texas’ fight for independence and provides a human scale for this vast and complex story. Lost Cause documents the violent reaction to Reconstruction by Texans. As Jackson wrote, “Texas reaped a bitter harvest from the War Between the States. Part of this dark legacy was the great unrest that plagued the beaten but unbowed populace.” The tensions caused by Reconstruction are told through the Taylor-Sutton feud, which raged across South Texas, embracing two generations and causing untold grief, and the gunslinger John Wesley Hardin, who swept across Texas killing Carpetbaggers, Federal soldiers, and Indians.
