Book Mai Kolia Tetun

Download or read book Mai Kolia Tetun written by Geoffrey Hull and published by Caritas Australia. This book was released on 1993 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the island of Timor some twenty languages and dialects are spoken, and the Tetum taught in this book is not the rural or 'classical' variety of the language, but Tetum-Praca, the structurally simpler and lexically richer verancular of Dili which, during the centuries of Portugese rule, spread from the capital throughout the eastern half of the island as a lingua franca. Although Tetum has no official status today, it is the language in which East Timorese from different regions prefer to communicate, and it remains very much alive in the colonies of East Timorese that have grown up in Australia and Portugal since 1975. Tetum is also widely used by the East Timorese Catholic Church in its worship and everyday dealings with the people, and it is now becoming the vehicle of a modern literature." -- Inside back cover.

Book Austronesian Undressed

Download or read book Austronesian Undressed written by David Gil and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Austronesian languages exhibit isolating word structure. This volume offers a series of investigations into these languages, which are found in an "isolating crescent" extending from Mainland Southeast Asia through the Indonesian archipelago and into western New Guinea. Some of the languages examined in this volume include Cham, Minangkabau, colloquial Malay/Indonesian and Javanese, Lio, Alorese, and Tetun Dili. The main purpose of this volume is to address the general question of how and why languages become isolating, by examination of a number of competing hypotheses. While some view morphological loss as a natural process, others argue that the development of isolating word structure is typically driven by language contact through various mechanisms such as creolization, metatypy, and Sprachbund effects. This volume should be of interest not only to Austronesianists and historians of Insular Southeast Asia, but also to grammarians, typologists, historical linguists, creolists, and specialists in language contact.

In simple, straightforward terms, Dr. Pimsleur will help you learn grammar (seamlessly), vocabulary, and how to practice pronunciation (and come out sounding like a native). Originally published in 1980, How to Learn a Foreign Language is now available on the 50th anniversary of Dr. Pimsleur’s publication of the first of his first audio courses that embodied the concepts and methods found here.
