Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Reinforced Concrete, Buildings Under Load The Engineering Experiment Station was established by act of the Board of Trustees, December 8, 1903. It is the purpose of the Station to carry on investigations along various lines of engineering and to study problems of importance to professional engineers and to the manufacturing, railway, mining, constructional, and industrial interests of the State. The control of the Engineering Experiment Station is vested in the heads of the several departments of the College of Engineering, These constitute the Station Staff, and with the Director, determine the character of the investigations to be undertaken. The work is carried on under the supervision of the Staff, sometimes by research fellows as graduate work, sometimes by members of the instructional staff of the College of Engineering, but more frequently by investigators belonging to the Station crops. The results of these investigations are published in the form of bulletins, which record mostly the experiments of the Station's own staff of investigators. There will also be issued from time to time in the form of circulars, compilations giving the results of the experiments of engineers, industrial works, technical institutions, and governmental testing departments. The volume and number at the top of the title page of the cover are merely arbitrary numbers and refer to the general publications of the University of Illinois; above the title is given the number of the Engineering Experiment Station bulletin or circular which should be used in referring to these publications. Purpose and Scope. It is the purpose of this bulletin to present the results of certain tests made on four reinforced concrete buildings and one reinforced concrete test structure. These tests were made with a view of getting experimental information on the action of the concrete and the reinforcing bars in floor slabs of the flat slab type of building construction. Data were obtained also on the bending action of the supporting columns. Efforts were made to find the distribution of stress in the bands of reinforcement both laterally and longitudinally, and that of the compressive stresses in the concrete on the opposite face of the slab; these in the regions of both the negative bending moment and of the positive bending moment. The description of the methods used in making the test is limited to those features which are different from the methods used in the tests described in Bulletin No.64 of the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station, "Tests of Reinforced Concrete Buildings Under Load," and from the methods described in a paper on "The Use of the Strain Gage in the Testing of Materials." It will be appreciated that the circumstances surrounding the floor test of a building are unfavorable to securing definite and uniform quantitative results. The structure is not homogeneous. There is a distribution of the resistance afforded by the structure to parts beyond the portion which is loaded. Effects of changes in temperature are troublesome. The stresses developed in the steel and in the concrete are small and there is considerable variation between parts which are supposedly similar in action. The conditions under which the measurement of deformation must be made are unfavorable to securing exactness. The location and presence of the loading material also add to the difficulties of the work. It will be seen that it is impracticable to obtain complete information or to formulate conclusions which are entirely definite. In deciding upon the scope of the book, the authors have endeavored to select matters of interest to the mature and experienced engineer, and for that reason the ultimate result of the analysis has been treated in greater detail than the derivation itself. Many books on reinforced concrete have been written principally for the practical man or even for the untrained man; those who approve of that tendency will not approve of this book, in which all references to weights and dimensions, earth pressure, etc., have been avoided. The practicing engineer, the contractor, or even the college student should look for such matters in special "pocket books," and he must not expect the reinforced concrete book to furnish a complete encyclopedia on civil and hydraulic engineering. On the other hand, much matter has been included in this book which will be looked for in vain in other works, and this is especially true of Part I, where an account of the history of reinforced concrete has been given, with special reference to the patents granted by the United States. Naturally, a selection of the more important or interesting patents is a difficult matter, and most likely some readers will find that too much has been included, and others that not enough has been included. However this may be, the records of the patent office contain on the whole more and better information than any other source, and the engineer who is striving to attain perfection cannot afford to relegate the most valuable thoughts and results of his predecessors to the scrap heap. The first named stresses and the resisting moment resulting therefrom in many cases measure the ability of the beam to carry the required load. With reinforced concrete beams, however, the second type of stresses under conditions which are not unusual, may be the limiting element in the strength of the beam, and the resistance to such stresses therefore constitutes an important feature of a well designed beam. These web stresses may include bond stress (resistance to slip of reinforcing bar in the concrete), shearing stresses in various directions, and tensile stresses and compressive stresses in directions other than that parallel to the axis of the beam. The calculation of the amount and distribution of the web stresses is complicated, and for use in design it will be convenient to use certain assumptions and approximations. The discussion will be made under three heads: (1) Beams without Web Reinforcement. (2) Beams with Bars Bent Up, and (3) Beams with Stirrups.
