Book excerpt: Extensive research has revealed that central and peripheral physiological mechanisms that act to assess and respond to negative and arousing emotional events also act to consolidate memory for the event. An area of research yet to be fully investigated is the effect of positive and arousing emotion on long-term memory. The paucity of research may be due to the difficulty in experimentally manipulating positive and arousing emotions in the research laboratory. A source of emotional arousal yet to be fully explored in this context is music. A number of studies now demonstrate that music a) elicits strong subjective feelings of emotion, b) activates limbic structures involved in emotion processing, and c) elicits physiological responses consistent with emotion. The aim of the current research project was to determine whether positive emotional arousal elicited by music could facilitate long-term declarative memory. Three experiments were conducted with a total of 127 participants ranging in age from 18 to 50 years (M = 28.10, SD = 10.05), 68% of which were female. Full exploration of the relationship between emotion elicited by music and non-music stimuli and memory was made possible with the use of a wide range of emotion measures and material to be remembered. The aims of Experiment 1 were to: a) replicate the emotion-enhanced memory effect reported by previous researchers using a three-phase slideshow paradigm; and b) determine whether the presentation of emotionally arousing background music further enhanced memory for the slideshow. The results revealed that relative to non-music and neutral music comparison conditions, the experimenter-selected music had no effect on emotional arousal, or on long-term declarative memory. Experiment 2 was designed to establish the emotion inducing properties of music with participant-selected positive and arousing music, and to determine whether emotion elicited in this way influenced memory. The results confirmed that participant-selected music elicited subjective and physiological arousal responses that were consistent with positive and arousing emotions, and that this music facilitated the early stages of long-term memory. Experiment 3 tested the memory modulating effect of positive and arousing music on memory consolidation by presenting music soon after learning. Results revealed that after controlling for high baseline arousal levels and memory ability, music modulated memory consolidation processes. However, music tended to have an impairing effect on memory in this experiment. Conclusions drawn from this project were that music has the capacity to elicit positive emotion, and that this music induced emotion has the potential to both enhance and impair long-term memory. The time of music presentation, and participants' choice in music utilized, may determine the direction of this effect. These conclusions must, however, be accepted with caution given the low sample size for many of the statistical analyses. The major contribution of this research project is the methodological rigor applied to understanding the conditions under which emotion elicited by music influences memory. Future research investigating the influence of music on cognitive functioning can thus proceed from a stronger base of empirical evidence.

These emotions can be highly pleasurable and accompanied by increased physiological arousal. Pleasure-inducing music activates a network of brain regions including the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), striatum, and amygdala. In Experiment 1, I explore the neural structures critical for music-evoked pleasure. I hypothesize that individuals with damage to brain regions involved in emotional responses to music (e.g., mPFC, striatum, amygdala) will show a decrease in their pleasurable responses to music after brain injury. Patients from the Iowa Neurological Patient Registry completed questionnaires that assessed current emotional responses to music and changes in emotional responses to music after brain injury. The results provided partial support for the hypothesis, and the most striking loss of musical pleasure (referred to as "music anhedonia") occurred in a patient with damage to the striatum. However, musical pleasure appears to be relatively resistant to brain damage, as music anhedonia was only observed in a few individuals with varying regions of brain damage. Along with strong emotions, music often triggers distant memories. However, the mechanism underlying music-evoked autobiographical memories (MEAMs) has not yet been investigated. Here, I predict that emotion is a central aspect underlying MEAMs. In Experiment 2a, I tested the hypothesis that MEAMs are more emotional and vivid than autobiographical memories evoked by pictures of famous faces. Neurologically normal, healthy adults viewed pictures of famous faces and listened to music while electrodermal activity was recorded. After each stimulus, participants described any memories that were evoked. Supporting my prediction, I found that MEAMs were significantly more vivid than face-evoked memories. In addition, music that evoked memories was accompanied by increased skin conductance responses compared to music that did not evoke memories. In Experiment 2b, I used a neuropsychological approach to test the prediction that neural regions underlying music-evoked emotions are also critical for MEAMs. I tested the hypothesis that individuals with damage to brain regions important for music-evoked emotions (mPFC, amygdala, and striatum) would have impaired MEAMs. Individuals with damage to these regions, brain-damaged comparison subjects (with damage to other regions) and neurologically normal comparison subjects completed the same task as in Experiment 2a. The results indicated partial support for the hypothesis, showing that individuals with mPFC, but not striatal, damage had slightly decreased MEAM vividness. Additionally, individuals with damage to the striatum and mPFC showed a disconnect between emotional ratings and physiological responsiveness. These findings provide important implications for the use of music in therapeutic settings. Since musical reward is predominantly preserved in individuals with brain damage, music can be used to improve mood and affect in clinical populations. In addition, these findings support the use of music as a memory aid in patients with dementia, since music-evoked memories are shown to be more vivid than memories evoked by other cues. Together, these experiments provide partial support for the hypothesis that neural regions important for emotion are also critical for MEAMs, indicating that emotion may be an important aspect underlying music-evoked autobiographical memories.

Book excerpt: Socioemotional Selectivity Theory (Carstensen, 1999) posits that as people age, they selectively focus on positive aspects of emotional stimuli as opposed to negative as a way of regulating emotions. Thus, older adults remember positive information better than negative. This hypothesis has been tested extensively with visual stimuli, but rarely with auditory stimuli. Findings from this study provide support in the auditory domain. In this study, 135 younger, middle-aged, and older adults heard consonant (pleasant) and dissonant (unpleasant) musical excerpts. Participants were randomly assigned to either a Study Only condition, in which they heard excerpts and studied them for later recognition, a Rate Only condition, in which they rated the excerpts and were tested later in a surprise recognition test, or a Rate and Study condition, in which they rated and studied the excerpts for later recognition. Results indicated that younger, middle-aged and older adults remembered consonant (pleasant) musical excerpts better than dissonant (unpleasant) musical excerpts overall and provide support for the hypotheses of the Socioemotional Selectivity Theory.

Research has shown that emotional valence and emotional arousal are two key aspects of emotion responsible for facilitating this (APA, 2013). However, various studies have found contradicting results when it comes to which type of valence (positive or negative) and which level of arousal (high or low) have the greatest memory enhancing effects. Similarly, the majority of previous research has specifically investigated this emotion-memory relationship in terms of memory for emotional content. The present study aims to address this gap by separating emotion from the to-be-learned stimuli, instead investigating how one's emotional state while encoding neutral information, impacts memory for that information later on. After inducing specific emotional states via exposure to affectively-rated music, subjects were exposed to a video reel composed of various neutral clips of random scenes. Memory was then measured based on performance within a subsequently presented "yes"/ "no'' recognition task. Characterizing "conditions'' based on the four arousal-valence quadrants of Russell's circumplex model of emotion (1980): high arousal-positive valence, high arousal-negative valence, low arousal-positive valence, low arousal-negative valence, I predicted that, compared to the other groups, the subjects in the high arousal-negative valence condition would perform best on the memory task. Results did not support this hypothesis, yielding no significant differences in memory performance between the four conditions. The limitations of this study design are considered and suggestions are made for future research.

With the advance of modern neuroimaging techniques during the past decades, we are now beginning to understand better what goes on in the healthy brain when we hear, play, think, and feel music and how the structure and function of the brain can change as a result of musical training and expertise. For more than a century, music has also been studied in the field of neurology where the focus has mostly been on musical deficits and symptoms caused by neurological illness (e.g., amusia, musicogenic epilepsy) or on occupational diseases of professional musicians (e.g., focal dystonia, hearing loss). Recently, however, there has been increasing interest and progress also in adopting music as a therapeutic tool in neurological rehabilitation, and many novel music-based rehabilitation methods have been developed to facilitate motor, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of infants, children and adults suffering from a debilitating neurological illness or disorder. Traditionally, the fields of music neuroscience and music therapy have progressed rather independently, but they are now beginning to integrate and merge in clinical neurology, providing novel and important information about how music is processed in the damaged or abnormal brain, how structural and functional recovery of the brain can be enhanced by music-based rehabilitation methods, and what neural mechanisms underlie the therapeutic effects of music. Ideally, this information can be used to better understand how and why music works in rehabilitation and to develop more effective music-based applications that can be targeted and tailored towards individual rehabilitation needs. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together research across multiple disciplines with a special focus on music, brain, and neurological rehabilitation. We encourage researchers working in the field to submit a paper presenting either original empirical research, novel theoretical or conceptual perspectives, a review, or methodological advances related to following two core topics: 1) how are musical skills and attributes (e.g., perceiving music, experiencing music emotionally, playing or singing) affected by a developmental or acquired neurological illness or disorder (for example, stroke, aphasia, brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, focal dystonia, or tinnitus) and 2) what is the applicability, effectiveness, and mechanisms of music-based rehabilitation methods for persons with a neurological illness or disorder? Research methodology can include behavioural, physiological and/or neuroimaging techniques, and studies can be either clinical group studies or case studies (studies of healthy subjects are applicable only if their findings have clear clinical implications).
