Book Stabilization and Solidification of Hazardous Radioactive and Mixed Wastes

Download or read book Stabilization and Solidification of Hazardous Radioactive and Mixed Wastes written by T. Michael Gilliam and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1992 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Provides current information on the use of stabilization and solidification (S/S), as well as an international perspective on the role of S/S for treating waste residues. Thirty-nine papers by researchers working with S/S technologies from both the low-level radioactive and chemically hazardous waste communities are presented in sections on: regulatory and technical guidance; specialty wastes--organics, ashes, and resins; laboratory-scale leachability studies; laboratory-scale process development; test method development; and large-scale evaluation or demonstration. Member price, $62. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book Containment of High Level Radioactive and Hazardous Solid Wastes with Clay Barriers

Download or read book Containment of High Level Radioactive and Hazardous Solid Wastes with Clay Barriers written by Raymond N. Yong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the principal objections to or problems with the use of nuclear fuel is that a proven method for safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel has yet to be established. The central focus of most schemes underway to dispose of these high-level radioactive wastes relies on clay-based buffers and barriers to isolate spent fuel canisters in borehole

Book Waste Forms Technology and Performance

Download or read book Waste Forms Technology and Performance written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-09-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) is responsible for cleaning up radioactive waste and environmental contamination resulting from five decades of nuclear weapons production and testing. A major focus of this program involves the retrieval, processing, and immobilization of waste into stable, solid waste forms for disposal. Waste Forms Technology and Performance, a report requested by DOE-EM, examines requirements for waste form technology and performance in the cleanup program. The report provides information to DOE-EM to support improvements in methods for processing waste and selecting and fabricating waste forms. Waste Forms Technology and Performance places particular emphasis on processing technologies for high-level radioactive waste, DOE's most expensive and arguably most difficult cleanup challenge. The report's key messages are presented in ten findings and one recommendation.

Book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization

Download or read book Strategy and Methodology for Radioactive Waste Characterization written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade significant progress has been achieved in the development of waste characterization and control procedures and equipment as a direct response to ever-increasing requirements for quality and reliability of information on waste characteristics. Failure in control procedures at any step can have important, adverse consequences and may result in producing waste packages which are not compliant with the waste acceptance criteria for disposal, thereby adversely impacting the repository. The information and guidance included in this publication corresponds to recent achievements and reflects the optimum approaches, thereby reducing the potential for error and enhancing the quality of the end product. -- Publisher's description.

Book Proposed Evaluation Protocol for Cement based Solidified Wastes

Download or read book Proposed Evaluation Protocol for Cement based Solidified Wastes written by Canada. Environment Canada and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many processes were developed to chemically stabilize and solidify industrial wastes. This evaluation protocol is a decision-making tool for managing stabilized-solidified (S/S) wastes which could be used in a regulatory framework. For that purpose, the protocol is based on the measurement of several physical, engineering, and chemical properties of S/S wastes in order to evaluate different utilization and disposal scenarios. Several of the testing methods in the protocol were evaluated in a cooperative project with the industry initiated by Environment Canada; others are methods recommended by standards organizations in the fields of hazardous and radioactive wastes; and some properties of S/S wastes are measured using methods that are still in their development stage. The protocol evaluates both level 1, based on contaminant partitioning, and level 2, based on physical entrapment.
