Book Statistics Testing and Defense Acquisition

Download or read book Statistics Testing and Defense Acquisition written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-05-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every weapons system being developed, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) must make a critical decision: Should the system go forward to full-scale production? The answer to that question may involve not only tens of billions of dollars but also the nation's security and military capabilities. In the milestone process used by DOD to answer the basic acquisition question, one component near the end of the process is operational testing, to determine if a system meets the requirements for effectiveness and suitability in realistic battlefield settings. Problems discovered at this stage can cause significant production delays and can necessitate costly system redesign. This book examines the milestone process, as well as the DOD's entire approach to testing and evaluating defense systems. It brings to the topic of defense acquisition the application of scientific statistical principles and practices.

Book Test Rig Design and Evaluation

Download or read book Test Rig Design and Evaluation written by John J. Kantura III and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since many real systems are nonlinear, it is important to understand their characteristics for creating safe, efficient designs. This is true for structural dynamics, where the behavior of a system is influenced by joints, riveted connections, bolted connections, etc. These connections can be a source of sizeable damping for a structure. In addition, it is possible that these nonlinear connections will influence the system2s structural dynamic response. A better understanding of these nonlinear behaviors will be of great help for analytical models to account for such friction sources in the system dynamics of a structure. In order to complete this task, a sliding friction joint test rig was developed by another student, Mr. Robert Watts. Mr. Watts designed a rig that constrains two beams in contact. The test rig was designed in an attempt to isolate the beams and the friction joint. One beam can be transversely excited at various levels. The applied excitation levels and normal loads can be varied to investigate the joint from a full contact case to a partial slip case. With the rig, a number of experiments can be performed to investigate the contact of the beams. This paper evaluates the test rig to ensure it performs as designed. A modal test of the rig was performed and indeed verifies that the rig isolates the beams as a SDOF system over a frequency range of 40 to 300 Hz. The test setup details, such as testing software, hardware, loading, etc., are thoroughly documented to aid future research. Data was collected and analyzed to show that the current rig can be effectively operated under a full loading condition to a near slip condition. Characterization methods in both the frequency and time domain are given, with expected nonlinear trends shown in the data. Results such as FRF distortion and inverse FRF2s show a clear nonlinear damping. For time domain results, plots of hysteresis loops show a static coefficient of friction value near 0.60. Lastly, ways to improve specific areas such as beam alignment, guide rods, and normal loading are discussed with a new design.

Book A Journal Bearing Test Rig With Reduced Uncertainty

Download or read book A Journal Bearing Test Rig With Reduced Uncertainty written by D. Wale and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents results from a design study for a new journal bearing test rig intended to set new standards of accuracy. The paper summarizes a review of previous rigs and experimental techniques, with consideration and selection of the general design features most likely to give high accuracy in a new rig. Certain sources of error are identified and described, including those associated with the measurement system and build errors. A numerical assessment of the sensitivity to errors in selected experimental configurations is presented. In addition, methods of controlling uncertainties are discussed. This paper would be of interest to practicing engineers and researchers, either already involved, or new, to experimental journal bearing testing.

Book Development of a Compression Test Rig for Evaluation of Mechanical Properties Related to Design for Containerization and Transportation of Fruits

Download or read book Development of a Compression Test Rig for Evaluation of Mechanical Properties Related to Design for Containerization and Transportation of Fruits written by Christopher Ihueze and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relevant literatures necessary for design of testing equipment for mechanical properties of biological materials are reviewed. A digitized compression testing system has been developed to evaluate the mechanical properties of agricultural produce fruits in Nigeria. The designed equipment performed satisfactorily by estimating precisely some basic mechanical properties like Poisson's ratio, elastic modulus, bioyield strength, ultimate load, fracture load and elastic limit of tested materials. The system consists of the top platen, the lower platen, the moving platen, the Support Column, the threaded shaft, the arm, the digital linear scale and the digital load scale and has the ability to instantaneously evaluate both load and displacement from where the mechanical properties.

Book Psychological Testing

Download or read book Psychological Testing written by Theresa J.B. Kline and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2005-02-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Psychological Testing by Theresa J. B. Kline is an accessible, easy-to-read book that effectively communicates the current concepts, trends, and controversies in the field of psychological testing. Readers are provided with an in-depth analysis of psychometrics in a format that will keep their attention and that they will be able to relate to the significance of psychological testing across numerous areas such as schools, businesses, clinical settings, military, or government." -Todd L. Chmielewski, PsycCRITIQUES, December 7, 2005 VOL. 50, NO. 49, ARTICLE 12 Psychological Testing: A Practical Approach to Design and Evaluation offers a fresh and innovative approach to students and faculty in the fields of testing, measurement, psychometrics, research design, and related areas of study. Author Theresa J.B. Kline guides readers through the process of designing and evaluating a test, while ensuring that the test meets the highest professional standards. The author uses simple, clear examples throughout and fully details the required statistical analyses. Topics include—but are not limited to—design of item stems and responses; sampling strategies; classical and modern test theory; IRT program examples; reliability of tests and raters; validation using content, criterion-related, and factor analytic approaches; test and item bias; and professional and ethical issues in testing. With the student in mind, Kline has created features that ease them into more difficult ideas, always stressing the practical use of theoretical concepts. Features include A step-by-step approach to designing a test, including construct identification, construct operationalization, collecting data, item assessment, and reliability and validity techniques Examples of data analyses with printouts and interpretation Up-to-date coverage of psychometric topics, such as difference scores, change scores, translation, computer adaptive testing, reliability and validity generalization, professional and ethical guidelines, and references IRT program outputs (dichotomous and multiple response) Coverage of traditional topics in the context of how they would be used, such as standard errors and confidence intervals Sampling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses, as well as response rates and missing data management Psychological Testing is perfectly suited as a main text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate Testing or Psychometrics courses in departments of Psychology, Education, Sociology, Management, and in the Human Services disciplines. Professional researchers, educators, and consultants will also want to add this to their libraries for up-to-date coverage of test design and evaluation techniques. "Professor Kline′s attempts to de-mystify complex measurement concepts are beautifully simplified and illustrated in her countless illustrations of practical and relevant problems for the mathematically-challenged student. This book is also a must-have for those who simply do not have the desire for the theoretical jargon used in similar textbooks but are interested in the important conceptual and practical aspects of measurement as they apply in their disciplines." —Arturo Olivarez, Jr., Texas Tech University "Kline′s Psychological Testing provides a well-written treatment of the critical issues in designing and evaluating psychometric instruments. This book will be very useful to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers." —Richard Block, Montana State University
