Book Test Excavations at Painted Rock Reservoir

Download or read book Test Excavations at Painted Rock Reservoir written by Lynn S. Teague and published by Arizona State Museum. This book was released on 1981 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test excavations were undertaken by the Arizona State Museum during 1978 and 1979 in the vicinity of Gila Bend, Arizona, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Excavations at AZ Z:1:7 and AZ Z:1:8 involved Santa Cruz and Sacaton Phase Hohokam components with an area that was scheduled for agricultural development. Excavations at AZ S:16:36 were undertaken in connection with proposed modifications of the borrow area at Painted Rock Dam. This site consisted of rock circles and was apparently typical of an interesting archaeological complex concentrated on the northern terraces of the Gila River. Testing results were inconclusive with respect to the cultural affiliation and function of these sites. The report includes a reassessment of prehistory in the Gila Bend area. It is intended to provide a context for the evaluation of the data derived from these sites. This reassessment is unquestionably speculative. It is hoped, however, that it may encourage others to perform further research in the area.

Book Effects of Inundation on Cultural Resources in Painted Rock Reservoir Arizona An Assessment

Download or read book Effects of Inundation on Cultural Resources in Painted Rock Reservoir Arizona An Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1981 the Cultural Resource Management Division of the Arizona State Museum carried out a 640-acre archaeological survey at Painted Rock Dam in southwestern Arizona. The study assessed the effects of inundation on rock alignments and other remains. Intensive survey revealed 82 finds in or near the study area, ranging from isolated artifacts to 'Rock City, ' a complex of trails, rock alignments, and artifacts. The remains range in age from probably Preceramic to Recent, but in many cases the actual age and cultural affiliation of finds were ambiguous. This report attempts to distinguish ancient from recent alignments and assesses the potential significance of the remains. Ability to assess the effects of inundation was limited by the lack of pre-inundation data; nonetheless, some conclusions were reached. Inundation damage was largely due to wave action and was most pronounced on slopes and on top of ridges or knolls. Wave action could untimately destroy all sites within the reservoir area, but the rate of destruction is unknown and will vary according to the physical setting of sites. The report ends with recommendations for a program of site monitoring and testing and excavation of sites in immediate danger.

Book Investigations at Sunset Mesa Ruin

Download or read book Investigations at Sunset Mesa Ruin written by Richard Ciolek-Torrello and published by Statistical Research Technical. This book was released on 1999 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunset Mesa Ruin lies near the confluence of the Rillito and Santa Cruz Rivers in the northern Tucson Basin. First recorded in the late 1930s by Frank Midvale, the site contains two components: a prehistoric Rincon phase Hohokam settlement dating between A.D. 1000 and 1100 and a historical-period component centered on a three-room adobe dating to the late nineteenth century. Much of the report focuses on Rincon phase settlement and subsistence. The authors use data collected from the excavation of a discrete residential cluster of five pit houses to document a sequential series of small courtyard groups. Excavation of a canal segment provides the authors the opportunity to investigate Hohokam irrigation practices in the Tucson Basin, which differ dramatically from their better-known counterparts in the Phoenix Basin.

Book Sourcing Prehistoric Ceramics at Chodistaas Pueblo Arizona

Download or read book Sourcing Prehistoric Ceramics at Chodistaas Pueblo Arizona written by Mar’a Nieves Zede–o and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades archaeologists have used pottery to reconstruct the lifeways of ancient populations. It has become increasingly evident, however, that to make inferences about prehistoric economic, social, and political activities through the patterning of ceramic variation, it is necessary to determine the location where the vessels were made. Through detailed analysis of manufacturing technology and design styles as well as the use of modern analytical techniques such as neutron activation analysis, Zede–o here demonstrates a broadly applicable methodology for identifying local and nonlocal ceramics.
