Book Americanizing the Movies and Movie Mad Audiences 1910 1914

Download or read book Americanizing the Movies and Movie Mad Audiences 1910 1914 written by Richard Abel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-08-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging, deeply researched study provides the richest and most nuanced picture we have to date of cinema—both movies and movie-going—in the early 1910s. At the same time, it makes clear the profound relationship between early cinema and the construction of a national identity in this important transitional period in the United States. Richard Abel looks closely at sensational melodramas, including westerns (cowboy, cowboy-girl, and Indian pictures), Civil War films (especially girl-spy films), detective films, and animal pictures—all popular genres of the day that have received little critical attention. He simultaneously analyzes film distribution and exhibition practices in order to reconstruct a context for understanding moviegoing at a time when American cities were coming to grips with new groups of immigrants and women working outside the home. Drawing from a wealth of research in archive prints, the trade press, fan magazines, newspaper advertising, reviews, and syndicated columns—the latter of which highlight the importance of the emerging star system—Abel sheds new light on the history of the film industry, on working-class and immigrant culture at the turn of the century, and on the process of imaging a national community.

Book A Jay Disbrow Terrors of the Jungle Treasury

Download or read book A Jay Disbrow Terrors of the Jungle Treasury written by Star Publications and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-23 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fans of Jay Disbrow are often shocked at how young the artist was when he became a prolific force in comics during the 1950s. The stories in this book were created while Disbrow was still in his 20's, though he had already been a professional for years. His panels are known for their detail an complexity; he was never one to imitate, instead being one of those artists used as the model, as in "It reminds me of Disbrow." This book reprints some great Disbrow stories from Terrors Of The Jungle (Issues #5-7, 9, 10 & 20), along with the covers for those books and a bonus story from Dorothy Lamour #3 drawn by another master, Bill Everett. Book Into the Jungle

  • Author : Erica Ferencik
  • Publisher : Pocket Books
  • Release : 2021-01-26
  • ISBN : 1982123567
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Into the Jungle written by Erica Ferencik and published by Pocket Books. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “hypnotic, violent, unsparing” (A.J. Banner, USA TODAY bestselling author) thriller from the author of the “haunting, twisting thrill ride” (Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author) The River at Night, a young woman leaves behind everything she knows to take on the Bolivian jungle, but her excursion abroad quickly turns into a fight for her life. Lily Bushwold thought she’d found the antidote to endless foster care and group homes: a gig teaching English in Cochabamba, Bolivia. As soon as she could steal enough cash for the plane, she was on it. But the program was a scam. And bonding with other broke, rudderless girls in the local youth hostel wasn’t the answer. Falling crazy in love with Omar, a savvy, handsome local who’d left his life as a hunter in Ayachero—a remote jungle village—to try city life: this was the last thing Lily could have imagined. When Omar learns that a jaguar had killed his four-year-old nephew in Ayachero, he gives Lily a choice: stay alone in the unforgiving city, or travel to the last in the ever-more-isolated string of river towns in the jungles of Bolivia. Thirty-foot anacondas? Puppy-sized spiders? Vengeful shamans with unspeakable powers? None of it matters to love-struck Lily. She follows Omar to a ruthless new world of lawless poachers, bullheaded missionaries, and desperate indigenous tribes driven to the brink of extinction. To survive, Lily must navigate the jungle—and all its residents—using only her wits and resilience. “Gripping, breathtaking, and exquisitely told—Into the Jungle pulls you into another world, returning you forever transformed” (Wendy Walker, USA TODAY bestselling author).

Download or read book Jungle Comics 100 written by Kari Therrian and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JUNGLE COMICS #100The main character associated with the title is Kaanga. He appeared in every issue of Jungle Comics. When Kaanga was a child his parents died in the jungle and he was raised by apes. The reader never gets to know his real name or his ancestry, but the jungle is where Kaanga feels most at home. In the first issue Kaanga meets his mate Ann, who is a Jane clone, after he rescues her from a white slave trader named Bill Blackton. Ann then joins Kaanga in his jungle existence. After nearly ten years Kaanga was given his own title in Spring, 1949. This ran for 20 issues until the Summer of 1954. One of the reasons for the series demise was the formation of The Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory body that was formed because of moral concerns about the contents of many of the comics of the time. As much of Fiction House's material involved images of scantily clad women they withdrew from the market.
