Book Terrorism Documents of International and Local Control Volume 89

Download or read book Terrorism Documents of International and Local Control Volume 89 written by Douglas C Lovelace Jr and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-04 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism: Documents of International and Local Control is a hardbound series that provides primary-source documents on the worldwide counter-terrorism effort. Chief among the documents collected are transcripts of Congressional testimony, reports by such federal government bodies as the Congressional Research Service and the Government Accountability Office, and case law covering issues related to terrorism. Most volumes carry a single theme, and inside each volume the documents appear within topic-based categories. The series also includes a subject index and other indices that guide the user through this complex area of the law. Europe's Approach to Terrorism introduces Terrorism researchers to the realm of European Union security law. With an ever-expanding immigrant population and a rising Islamic presence within Europe, the EU's quickly developing security law demands the kind of topically organized document collection that Europe's Approach to Terrorism constitutes. A key feature of this volume is the section devoted to case law from the European Court of Justice, which has addressed the delicate legal issue of defining and categorizing philanthropic organizations as terrorist-supporting groups. This volume also features the text of European Parliament measures that regulate the flow of money to terrorist groups. Given the prominence of these questions in non-European countries as well, this volume will serve as a unique research tool for scholars and policymakers around the world.

Since Congressional hearings on this topic are normally closed to the public, many researchers possess only a limited knowledge of U.S. intelligence laws and practices. Professor Doug Lovelace here uses his own military expertise to provide researchers with commentary and documents that clarify the present state of U.S. intelligence law."--Publisher's website.

By dividing this topic into three prominent categories (aviation security, maritime security, and domestic security), Professor Lovelace expertly presents a summary of current U.S. security policy and assesses the value of those policies . Within the domestic security category, he also provides detailed guidance on such specialized issues as bio-defense and the connection between the drug trade and terrorist financing. Book Counter Terrorism and the Use of Force in International Law

Download or read book Counter Terrorism and the Use of Force in International Law written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, Michael Schmitt explores the legality of the attacks against Al Qaeda and the Taliban under the "jus ad bellum," that component of international law that governs when a State may resort to force as an instrument of national policy. Although States have conducted military counterterrorist operations in the past, the scale and scope of Operation Enduring Freedom may signal a sea change in strategies to defend against terrorism. This paper explores the normative limit on counterterrorist operations. Specifically, under what circumstances can a victim State react forcibly to an act of terrorism? Against whom? When? With what degree of severity? And for how long? The author contends that the attacks against Al Qaeda were legitimate exercises of the rights of individual and collective defense. They were necessary and proportional, and once the Taliban refused to comply with U.S. and United Nations demands to turn over the terrorists located in Afghanistan, it was legally appropriate for coalition forces to enter the country for the purpose of ending the ongoing Al Qaeda terrorist campaign. However, the attacks on the Taliban were less well grounded in traditional understandings of international law. Although the Taliban were clearly in violation of their legal obligation not to allow their territory to be used as a terrorist sanctuary, the author suggests that the degree and nature of the relationship between the Taliban and Al Qaeda may not have been such that the September 11 attacks could be attributed to the Taliban, thereby disallowing strikes against them in self-defense under traditional understandings of international law. Were the attacks, therefore, illegal? Not necessarily. Over the past half-century the international community's understanding of the international law governing the use of force by States has been continuously evolving. The author presents criteria likely to drive future assessments of the legality of counterterrorist operatio7.

Book DOMESTIC TERRORISM AND INCIDENT MANAGEMENT

Download or read book DOMESTIC TERRORISM AND INCIDENT MANAGEMENT written by Miki Vohryzek and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reading this text, the reader will have a fuller understanding of the nature of domestic terrorism and a clearer understanding of the basics. These basics include a review of the complex history that spans thousands of years, an explanation of definitions, a review of contemporary domestic terrorism, and the examination of intelligence gathering, threat analysis, and emergency responses to terrorism-incident management. It is hoped that such knowledge as presented here will enhance the public's understanding of domestic terrorism and law enforcement's ability to prevent and respond to its acts. It focuses almost exclusively on right-wing domestic terrorism because of its strong presence in the last twenty years and the projection of experts that right-wing terrorism will prevail well into the twenty-first century. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with definitional problems associated with policymaker's and law enforcement's handling of terrorism, an historical overview of terrorism and terrorist incidents in the global community, and an historical examination of terrorism from below in the United States. Part Two addresses the American Hate Movement and patriot-militia activities. It also discusses the emergence of special-interest extremist and terrorism groups that advocate violence based on an ideology or belief, which may include the desire for political and social change. They include ecological resistance groups, antienvironmental movements, animal rights and antiabortion activists. Part Three focuses on effective criminal intelligence-gathering techniques and the implementation of terrorism-incident management strategies.
