Book excerpt: Charting the exploration of an unknown world—our own—with a new cartography of living things rather than space available for conquest or colonization. This book charts the exploration of an unknown world: our own. Just as Renaissance travelers set out to map the terra incognito of the New World, the mapmakers of Terra Forma have set out to rediscover the world that we think we know. They do this with a new kind of cartography that maps living things rather than space emptied of life and available to be conquered or colonized. The maps in Terra Forma lead us inward, not off into the distance, moving from the horizon line of conventional cartography to the thickness of the ground, from the global to the local. Each map in Terra Forma is based on a specific territory or territories, and each tool, or model, creates a new focal point through which the territory is redrawn. The maps are “living maps,” always under construction, spaces where stories and situations unfold. They may map the Earth’s underside rather than its surface, suggest turning the layers of the Earth inside out, link the biological physiology of living inhabitants and the physiology of the land, or trace a journey oriented not by the Euclidean space of GPS but by points of life. These speculative visualizations can constitute the foundation for a new kind of atlas.

Book excerpt: No-one trusts humanity. No-one can quite understand why we're intent on destroying the only place we have to live in the Universe. No-one thinks we're worth a second thought. And certainly no-one is about to let us get off Rrth. That would be a complete disaster. But one alien thinks Rrth is worth looking at. Not humanity, obviously, we're appalling, but until we manage to kill every other living thing on the planet there are some truly wonderful places on Rrth and some wonderful creatures living in them. Best take a look while they're still there. But on one trip to Rrth our alien biologist causes a horrendous accident. The occupants of a car traveling down a lonely road spot his ship (the sort of massive lemon coloured, lemon shaped starship that really shouldn't be hanging in the sky over a road). Understandably the Bradbury's crash (interrupting the latest in a constant procession of bitter rows). And in the wreckage of their car our alien discovers a baby girl. She needs rescuing. From the car. From Rrth. From her humanity. And now eleven years later a girl called Terra is about to go to school for the first time. It's a very alien experience ... Terra is a charming and hilarious satirical fable. A story about how odd and alien we are. And a story about how human odd aliens are. It tells the story of a girl who grows up in a very different world, who gains a unique perspective on our world and a unique perspective on her new home. A girl who can teach us and them a lot. A girl living in an extraordinary world that is spiraling into a terrible war.

Download or read book Terra Madre written by Carlo Petrini and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than twenty years ago, when Italian Carlo Petrini learned that McDonald's wanted to erect its golden arches next to the Spanish Steps in Rome, he developed an impassioned response: he helped found the Slow Food movement. Since then, Slow Food has become a worldwide phenomenon, inspiring the likes of Alice Waters and Michael Pollan. Now, it's time to take the work of changing the way people grow, distribute, and consume food to a new level. In Terra Madre, Petrini shows us a solution in the thousands of newly formed local alliances between food producers and food consumers. And he proposes expanding these alliances-connecting regional food communities around the world to promote good, clean, and fair food. The end goal is a world in which communities are entitled to food sovereignty-allowed to choose not only what they want to grow and eat, but also how they produce and distribute it.

Book excerpt: Terra preta is the Portuguese name of a type of soil which is thought to have almost miraculous properties. The newspapers are flooded with reports about “black gold,” scientists believe that two of the greatest problems facing the world – climate change and the hunger crisis — can be solved by it. The beauty of it is that everyone can do something about it because since 2005 the secret of producing this black soil has been revealed — and it is a secret that seemed to have been lost forever with the downfall of the once thriving Indian culture of the Amazon basin. The recipe is astonishingly simple as all you need are kitchen or garden wastes, charcoal and earthworms, so it can be produced on every balcony or on the smallest of garden plots. The trio of authors Scheub, Pieplow and Schmidt, set off on a treasure hunt and condensed all the knowledge about the world’s most fertile soil into a convenient guidebook. In addition to a sound instruction manual on producing terra preta and organic charcoal (biochar), the handbook covers fundamental principles from climate farming to closed-loop economy. It makes a passionate plea against synthetic fertilizers and genetic technology and offers indispensable advice to all those who feel strongly about healthy food. Published in Partnership with the David Suzuki Institute.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The head of Russia's private Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin said Moscow's conventional army was leaving its positions near the eastern Ukraine hotspot town of Bakhmut. His comments came just after Russia's Defense Ministry announced it had redeployed forces around to take up stronger defensive positions north of Bakhmut. "This is not called regrouping, this is fleeing," Prigozhin said in an audio statement posted on social media. In a separate video message, Prigozhin said the Defense Ministry units "simply went fleeing" from positions around north and south of the city. "The flanks are failing. The front is collapsing," the Kremlin ally said. He said Ukrainian forces had captured positions at a reservoir and on tactical heights around Bakhmut. Kyiv's forces had also taken control of a road leading to Bakhmut from another smaller town further east, Chasiv Yar, which Russian forces had controlled. Ukraine claimed to have retaken swathes of land near Bakhmut. Russia said, however, it had repelled Ukrainian attacks along a 95-kilometer (60-mile) stretch of the eastern front near Bakhmut. "Attempts by the Defense Ministry in the information field to sugarcoat the situation - it's leading and will lead to a global tragedy for Russia," Prigozhin said. "For this reason, we must stop lying immediately," he added. Prigozhin has repeatedly claimed that the Russian Defense Ministry was refusing to deliver ammunition and has accused its chiefs in vitriolic statements. As many as 300,000 people have been killed or injured in the war so far, including 1,000 Ukrainian children. Hence it is imperative that Peace is restored between Ukraine and Russia, to stop the killing of Children. A continuation of Putin's illegal war on Ukraine would increasingly harm Russia's reputation in the International Community, and isolate the Russian people economically, socially and culturally - which is unnecessary and can be avoided, if Russia restores peaceful relations with the International Community. This includes the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory; and restoring Freedom of Speech, Press, Association and Liberty in the Russian Federation. It should also be noted that the borders of both Ukraine and Russia have been internationally recognized and defined in 1991 - with Russia's President Boris Yeltsin recognizing Ukraine's independence. Hence Russia should honour this agreement. Acting President of Russia / Mark 13. May 2023
