The author points out how Freud's energy-drive theory, although contradicted by scientific progress, has continued to characterise, a religiousness underpinning the spirit of psychoanalytic institutions: the icon of Freud. This spirit is accompanied by confusion between different psychoanalytic theories which are often incompatible with one another. The author blames the poor social image that psychoanalysis has earned in the past few years on this confusion of theories and haughty withdrawal into a single presumed orthodoxy. Some people that read the stories will be able to relate to them, for they may have been at the same battle. Readers may find in my book someone they use to know, a lost comrade. The veterans remembered the units they fought with also. There is also a whole history of events that took you back to places during the wars. One of the veterans gives a full detailed story about his experiences in Vietnam, when he was fighting during Vietnam's worst fighting, the Tet Offensive and Khe Shan Operations. It also features a US Marine stationed in China after the end of WWII. After reading this book, you will be more aware that there are veterans like the ones in the book in your neighborhood. You might even want to give them one of these books for a gift.

Roberto Speziale-Bagliacca exploits Sigmund Freud's fundamental stature, but rejects the common belief that "orthodox" psychoanalysis begins and ends with its founder. The author attempts to "see farther" than those who deny the advances and radical epistemological ruptures that have enriched and modified psychoanalysis after Freud. He also rejects the presumptions of those who condemn Freud for having "missed" much that only today is held to be true in psychoanalytic theory. In the author's view the relatively slow development of new ideas in psychoanalysis is traceable to what he terms "closure"-the narrow authoritarianism with which Freud's and his first followers protected the validity and basic outline of his method. Aware that a new approach to the understanding of the Freudian revolution means challenging this authoritarianism, Speziale-Bagliacca analyzes three chapters of the history of psychoanalysis to test its resilience: the Eissler-Roazen controversy over the suicide of Freud's pupil Victor Tausk, the case of the Wolf-Man analyzed by Freud, and the personality of Jacques Lacan and its influence on his writing and teaching method. In each instance, the author demonstrates how psychoanalytic knowledge runs the risk of becoming a closed system, a sort of secret society. To Speziale-Bagliacca, Freud is not infallible, but his "dethroning" must be conducted with courage, honesty, and an awareness of the inevitable anxiety that such an operation imposes. Book excerpt: Ever since Analysis Terminable and Interminable, the termination of therapy has placed the clinical and metapsychological levels of psychoanalytic thought in a dialectical tension. The rereading proposed by the authors situates Freud and Ferenczi as two poles of a debate which is still ongoing: psychoanalytic literature demonstrates the convergences, divergences and hybridizations which have come about through time, the various schools and the geography of analysis. The authors explore the development of the termination process, and within this, the termination event as a final moment, each with its own characteristics. The beginning of the termination process constitutes a critical moment in the analysis, one we may investigate through the conceptual lens of liminality, a sort of threshold or border that is useful for the reading of a wide range of phenomena related to termination. Every termination is nonetheless incomplete, and it is against this backdrop that the authors' theoretical reflection and clinical experience interact, suggesting a typology of analytic termination. From this, a map of a little-explored terrain emerges, where we see a mixing of the boundaries between interior and exterior reality, individual and couple goals, and theoretical aims and concrete aspirations - all requiring a meticulous task of reconnaissance.
