Book Tensile Strength of Steel Plates Using Longitudinal Welds

Download or read book Tensile Strength of Steel Plates Using Longitudinal Welds written by Chad Ifland and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a tension steel plate is welded to a gusset steel plate and a tension load is transmitted to the gusset plate by longitudinal welds along both edges at the end of the tension plate, the shear lag factor (U) is used to determine the design tensile strength for the plate. The shear lag factor is determined from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Manual. The shear lag factor is selected from the table based on the length of the weld and the width of the steel plate that is in tension. The thickness of the plates, boundary condition of the gusset plate, the size and strength of the weld is not taken into account when determining the shear lag factor. This study will investigate if these factors will affect the design tensile strength for a tension plate welded to a gusset plate by longitudinal welds. NISA, finite element analysis software, will be used to determine the ultimate load the tension plate can handle before it fractures. Then the results will be compared to the design strengths calculated by using the shear lag factors earlier stated.

Book Welding Test 206 Physical Characteristics of Welded Longitudinal Seams Preliminary Investigation

Download or read book Welding Test 206 Physical Characteristics of Welded Longitudinal Seams Preliminary Investigation written by J. W. Day and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago, a series of tensile tests on medium steel plates with a longitudinal weld in the direction of loading was conducted by the Bureau of Construction and Repair at the Bureau of Standards. These tests showed that the presence of the longitudinal weld decreased the ultimate strength of the plates. The effect was attributed to the low ductility of the weld as compared to the high ductility of the plate. Since those tests were conducted the quality o the electrodes used in welding medium steel has been greatly improved. The minimum specifications for Grade EA electrodes call for a yield strength of 50,000 pounds per square inch, an ultimate tensile strength of 65,000 pounds per square inch, and an elongation of 22 per cent in 2 inches. Welding Test 206 was designed to show the effect of longitudinal seams welded with Grade EA electrodes on medium and high tensile steel plating. Preliminary to this test, five specimens were designed by the Bureau of Ships to determine whether it would be necessary to include welds of both single-vee and double-vee type. These specimens were fabricated at the Norfolk Navy Yard and shipped to the Experimental Model Basin for test.

Book Investigation of Weldability of Hot work Tool Steels

Download or read book Investigation of Weldability of Hot work Tool Steels written by N. A. Sinclair and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weldability of 6 hot-work tool steels was investigated to develop optimum welding procedures. Welds were made in sheet and plate with the inert- gas tungsten-arc and inert-gas consumable electr de processes under various welding conditions. Variations in preheat, postheat, and energy input had statistically significant, but practically unimportant, effects on mechanical properties after hardening and tempering. Most mechanical-test failures were initiated in the welds whether or not defects were present. The weld metal retained its heterogeneous microstructure after hardening and tempering even when previously subject to annealing-type heat treatments. Lehigh-restrainttest s udies indicated that hot and cold cracking can occur. Low-temperature cracking can be prevented by increasing the preheat temperature. Large-radius Charpy-impact specimens were found to be more satisfactory than the V-notched specimens for these steels. The high-temperature weld tensile strength at 1000 F was 190,000 psi for an H-11 steel; it was reduced to 156,000 after holding at 1000 F for 24 hours.
