Book Field Exposure Tests of Reinforced Concrete Beams

Download or read book Field Exposure Tests of Reinforced Concrete Beams written by E. C. Roshore and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two series of reinforced concrete beams were made and exposed to severe natural weathering at Treat Island, Maine. Variables under study were thickness of concrete cover over and tensile stress in the reinforcing steel, position of the steel, and type of concrete and steel used. Results after 15 winters of exposure of the first series of beams (Series A) indicated that the air-entrained beams were significantly more resistant to the weathering that the nonair-entrained beams, and that the beams with reinforcing steel having deformations conforming to ASTM Standard A 305 were more resistant to the weathering than those with reinforcing steel having old-style deformations. Results after 12 winters of exposure of the second series of beams (Series B) indicated that more exposure is needed to produce deterioration sufficient to permit unambiguous conclusions.

Book Tensile Crack Exposure Tests Report 4 Statistical Analysis of the Long Term Durability of Series B Beams

Download or read book Tensile Crack Exposure Tests Report 4 Statistical Analysis of the Long Term Durability of Series B Beams written by H. T Thornton (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1954, a long-term durability program was begun to determine the effects of severe natural weathering on reinforced concrete beams loaded to different stress levels and containing reinforcing steel with different types of bar deformation in either top-as-cast or bottom-as-cast positions. The beams were fabricated, cured, and loaded at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) in 1954, then shipped to Eastport, Marine, and placed on the beach at the natural weathering exposure station on the south side of Treat Island in Cobscook Bay. The beams were subjected to twice daily tidal cycles exposing them to wetting under considerable head and drying to surface dry conditions. In addition, during the winter months, the beams were subjected to cycles of freezing and thawing with each tide when the air temperature was at or below 28 deg F ( -2.2 deg C). The beams were inspected annually during the exposure period and evaluated by a team of inspectors rating the degree of deterioration. Nondestructive tests were also performed. Each year data on condition, percent velocity squared (v2), and maximum crack width were collected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighty-two reinforced beams were made of concrete with a nominal compressive strength of 3500 psi at 28 days age. Air-entrained and nonair-entrained concrete were used. Seventy-four beams were reinforced with rail-steel bars, of which 64 had deformations conforming to ASTM Designation A 305-50T and 10 had old-style deformations. Eight beams were reinforced with billet-steel bars having deformations conforming to ASTM Designation A 305-50T. Coverage over the steel was either 3/4 in. or 2 in. and bars were placed in either bottom or top position when the concrete was placed. Seventy-two beams were stressed from 20,000 to 50,000 psi by third-point loading and in the loaded condition exposed to severe natural weathering at half-tide elevation on the beach at Treat Island, Cobscook Bay, Maine. Ten control specimens were exposed but not loaded. Results after three winters exposure indicated that only air-entrained concrete specimens are sufficiently durable to withstand this type of exposure. Evaluation of the test results was based on the condition of the specimens after two winters exposure because of the rapid deterioration of the nonair-entrained concrete beams which constituted the majority of the specimens in the program. The test results indicate that specimens with bars having deformations complying with ASTM Designation A 305-50T performed more satisfactorily than did those with old-style deformations. No effects of depth of protective concrete over the reinforcing steel were revealed. (Author).
