Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education: A Comprehensive Text Book This Text Book is the outcome of a wide demand for a complete Handbook, covering fully all phases of Religious Education in the Church. There was no such book hitherto extant. It took a library of some thirty or more volumes to cover the necessary field, as laid down in the Standard Course for teacher-training set forth by the Joint Commission on Sunday Schools. Such reading was overwhelm ing, unnecessary (for often but a few pages or precepts of a writer applied directly to Religious Education), and costly in the purchase of so many volumes. The author prepared a smaller book, Sunday School Teaching, a compilation of authorities covering 175 pages, in 1903, which has gone through three large editions in five years, being the Guide Book for the training of several thousand Sunday School teachers, of all religious bodies. Even day school educators found it suggestive and illuminat ing. It will be continued in the market. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of an American Citizen The purpose of this series of loosely con nected chapters is to call attention to some of the influences which direct, and some of the qualities which mark, the religious education of an American citizen. The normal life of an American proceeds from childhood to youth and from youth to manhood, through the shift ing environments of home, school, college, busi ness, citizenship and Church; and at each step he is met by conditions and demands which may either promote or obstruct his religious educa tion. What, then, are the circumstances which are likely to be most favorable for a healthy minded and progressive religious experience? What can be done by parents, teachers, em ployers, statesmen, or pastors, to reinforce American citizenship with a rational religious life? What are the special obstacles which American civilization offers to religious prog ress? What are the traits of the American character on which teachers of religion may most confidently depend? Book The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice Classic Reprint written by Henry Frederick Cope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice The last ten years have seen greater progress in religious education than any preceding decade, perhaps greater than any five decades. When this book was first published, a little over eight years ago, it advocated many reforms which have now become accomplished facts. On the educational principles then laid down the school has been reorganised or at least the principles have been accepted and the newer methods accepted so that it is no longer necessary to treat them in a prophetic manner except to explain their elabo ration and intrication and to look forward to their further development. In addition so many new opportunities have opened up to the school and, as our social life has changed, some new duties have appeared before it. Perhaps the need for a thorough revision of a book on methods is the best evidence of the progress and increased efficiency of the Sunday school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious Education: Considered as the Divinely Appointed Way to the Regenerate Life If any man is in Christ, says the Apostle Paul, he is a new creature. Old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Cor. V. We ask attention to the plainness and strength of this language, a new creature. But, strong as the words are, they do not convey the full meaning of the original, which is, a new creation. That is to say, he who is in Christ is creat ed again; and, lest the words may fail to be apprehended, the idea is further expressed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and Child Psychology, an Annotated Bibliography of the Literature, Supplementary to How to Teach in Sunday School The Twentieth Century feels the overemphasis in this theory and realizes that no child liveth unto himself, but it su'bstitutes the centrality of society for the centrality of childhood. The child lives in, through, and for its social relationships. Even the religion, and particularly the morality Of the child is inter preter from a social point of view. Not the child in the King dom of God - Oi such is the kingdom of heaven - but the destiny of the child in the coming social democracy, has become the interpretative key to the educational goal. Book The American Encounter with Buddhism 1844 1912

Download or read book The American Encounter with Buddhism 1844 1912 written by Thomas A. Tweed and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Thomas Tweed examines nineteenth-century America's encounter with one of the world's major religions. Exploring the debates about Buddhism that followed upon its introduction in this country, Tweed shows what happened when the transplanted religious movement came into contact with America's established culture and fundamentally different Protestant tradition. The book, first published in 1992, traces the efforts of various American interpreters to make sense of Buddhism in Western terms. Tweed demonstrates that while many of those interested in Buddhism considered themselves dissenters from American culture, they did not abandon some of the basic values they shared with their fellow Victorians. In the end, the Victorian understanding of Buddhism, even for its most enthusiastic proponents, was significantly shaped by the prevailing culture. Although Buddhism attracted much attention, it ultimately failed to build enduring institutions or gain significant numbers of adherents in the nineteenth century. Not until the following century did a cultural environment more conducive to Buddhism's taking root in America develop. In a new preface, Tweed addresses Buddhism's growing influence in contemporary American culture.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
