Although older studies of ponderosa pine - near Pikes Peak in Colorado and Priest River, Idaho (1911) - are considered to be the earliest examples of provenance tests of forest trees in North America (wang subsequent genetic research in ponderosa pine has concentrated mainly on the West Coast variety ponderosa.
