Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ten Giants of Jazz" is an anthology that explores the seminal contributions of a variety of great jazz artists. Although the expression giants of jazz is not new, this book takes the approach that certain artists are so closely linked to certain genres, that to tell their stories is to tell the (hi)story of jazz itself. Some of the jazz giants featured in this text are Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie. The book also discusses Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and John Coltrane. By learning about these artists, readers will also learn about genres of jazz. The book begins with Early New Orleans and Chicago jazz, then moves on to swing/big-band music, bebop, Latin, hard bop, cool, modal, fusion, and free form/avant-garde jazz. The final chapter presents a discussion of jazz today and the vibrant promise of its future. The numerous book excerpts provide a lively, engaging, narrative-oriented reading experience for students. Recommended listening and viewing examples available on YouTube give students the chance to see the artists and hear the music, bringing the written word to life in a meaningful way. The variety of selections on each artist and related genre gives students a well-rounded understanding that moves beyond the typical memorization of names, genres, instruments and song titles.Of special note for both students and professors are the end-of-chapter inserts, which make suggestions for further reading and listening, provide definitions of key terms, and give additional information to enhance understanding and deepen knowledge. "Ten Giants of Jazz" is an excellent introduction for students who have little or no knowledge of jazz, and no previous musical training. David R. Bubsey is a professional trombonist on the faculty of East Tennessee State University where he teaches the history of jazz. He holds the B.M.E. degree from The Ohio State University, the M.M. degree from Butler University, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at the University of Kentucky. His scholarly interest is the music of the twentieth century. He has over nineteen years of experience in music education, and his performance experiences over the past thirty years include a wide variety of settings such as symphony orchestra, brass quintet, theater orchestra, and jazz big band. While a member of the prestigious United States Army Field Band in Washington D.C., he performed with the Jazz Ambassadors on their 1989 tour of India.

Book excerpt: Jazz in New Orleans provides accurate information about, and an insightful interpretation of, jazz in New Orleans from the end of World War II through 1970. Suhor, relying on his experiences as a listener, a working jazz drummer, and writer in New Orleans during this period, has done a great service to lovers of New Orleans music by filling in some gaping holes in postwar jazz history and cutting through many of the myths and misconceptions that have taken hold over the years. Skillfully combining his personal experiences and historical research, the author writes with both authority and immediacy. The text, rich in previously unpublished anecdotes and New Orleans lore, is divided into three sections, each with an overview essay followed by pertinent articles Suhor wrote for national and local journals—including Down Beat and New Orleans Magazine. Section One, "Jazz and the Establishment," focuses on cultural and institutional settings in which jazz was first battered, then nurtured. It deals with the reluctance of power brokers and the custodians of culture in New Orleans to accept jazz as art until the music proved itself elsewhere and was easily recognizable as a marketable commodity. Section Two, "Traditional and Dixieland Jazz," highlights the music and the musicians who were central to early jazz styles in New Orleans between 1947 and 1953. Section Three, "An Invisible Generation," will help dispel the stubborn myth that almost no one was playing be-bop or other modern jazz styles in New Orleans before the current generation of young artists appeared in the 1980s.
