Intoxication and Society sets out to supplement the contemporary discourse surrounding intoxication with a more nuanced appreciation of the history and nature of what is very much a multidimensional problem. It does so by employing an interdisciplinary framework that includes contributions from leading academics in law, sociology, anthropology, history, literature, neuroscience and social psychology. The result is a subtle historical and contemporary rereading of the social construction of intoxication that will provide a secure basis for analysis as society continues to respond to the problematic pleasures of intoxication.

It argues that demand for healing rather than leisure drove the growth of a number of inland resorts which became renowned for expertise and treatment facilities. These aspects were actively marketed to doctors and patients. It assesses the influence of these centres on broader patterns of resort development, leisure and sociability in Britain. The study explores ideas about water’s healing potential and the varied ways it was used to maintain good health and treat a variety of illnesses. Water cures were endorsed by both orthodox and unorthodox practitioners and attracted growing numbers of patients into the twentieth century. It examines how institutions and skilled workers shaped the development of specialist resorts and considers why the NHS support for spa treatment declined from the 1960s.

The author also follows Taylor’s important visits to India and South America, where he initiated new Methodist missions in those contexts and pioneered the concept of “tentmaking” missions. In 1884, Taylor was elected missionary bishop of Africa by his church. By the end of his life, Taylor had recruited or inspired hundreds of Methodists to become foreign missionaries.

The service in March 1934 had been arranged by Ivor Atkins to whom, late in life, Elgar had disclosed his feelings about his first fiancée, Worcester-born Helen Weaver. Atkins chose three ‘Enigma Variations’ for the London Symphony Orchestra to play at the service: Variation I, dedicated to CAE (Alice) and to whom Elgar had been devoted for over thirty years; Variation IX evoked Nimrod (August Jaeger), whom Elgar described as ‘my dearest and truest friend’; Variation XIII was dedicated to ***. To most people, the first two Variations might seem obvious choices, being two people to whom Elgar was very close for many years, but only Atkins knew the truth behind his third choice. He believed that the unnamed, and therefore mysterious, Enigma XIII was in memory of Helen Weaver. Elgar: Variations and Enigmas examines why Elgar’s engagement to Helen ended and why she left Worcester. It investigates Helen’s enigmatic friend from Bradford, Annie Groveham. Annie stayed with Elgar and Helen at the Hotel Sedan in Leipzig in 1883 and, nearly fifty years later, following a rather tangled life, she re-entered Elgar’s life. This book reveals new information about Helen Weaver as a musician and includes previously unpublished photographs of her family. The sad tale is also related of one more enigmatic person in Elgar’s life: his brother-in-law Stanley Napier Roberts, whose personal misfortunes, particularly in the carefree hands of actress Lady Gipsy Rodgers, are notable and readable.
